Sometimes it takes a gentle touch to tame a wild beast. And some people never do learn that lesson.
Wa-hoo! I just loved the end of this one.

The art is spectacular, but the story is puzzling. Who actually OWNS the black pony? What the hell kind of ending was that? Yes, kids-- if you steal property and race for the hills everything WILL ALWAYS BE OKAY.

The story is 1.5 stars, but the art alone raises the book to three stars. Not only is it all in color, but some illustrations have intricate leather-colored borders that look exactly like the fancy stitching on Western saddles. The artist also did a really good job depicting the pony. The illustrations are heavily detailed, making the cowboys look exactly like they are -- fake cowboys.

It was good to see that the pony did not put up with any of the shit the "bronco busters" were shoveling. And the "small cowboy" saw right through them, too.

I love this book coming from a rodeo/cowboy background growing up. It has awesome illustrations and I love the characters names. They give a realistic outlook on cowboys of the old wild west. Still a heart-touching story though, giving a happy ending. A few harder vocabulary words, but a great way to introduce new vocab the child has likely not seen before.
