Backstage Dior

Rate this book
Veteran New York photographer

Roxanne Lowit has chronicled

John GallianoÂ’s fashion shows for

over a decade. With a rough-hewn,

up-close approach she delves into

the fascinating details behind the

scenes. Her collection of snapshotstyle

photographs convey the buzz

of fashionÂ’s consistently most inspiring

spectacle. A bold mixture of

color and black-and-white, these

images are by turns whimsical and

awe-inspiring. As much a star as the

celebrities she profiles, Lowit brings

an insider perspective to this world

of high glamour.

It's impossible to describe the atmosphere backstage: frantic, fraught and totally electrifying. Words can't do it justice; it's a visual circus! Here, all your research, all your sleepless nights. all your ideas fuse with the best hair, make-up and models in the world. Dreams become reality. Here, months of work is condensed into seconds and every second blurs—unless caught in the shutter of a camera—as final tweaks are made before she steps onto the stage. ... As our swans glide out onto the runway, no one out front is aware of all the pushing, pulling and preening that you don't see.

— John Galliano

Remember when Dior used to be fun?

(That was shady, but necessary.)

I'm not usually a fan of backstage, impromptu shots (preferring its preen and planned cousin, the studio photograph), but this book worked. This style of photography suits Galliano's Dior to a T -- capturing not only the joie de vivre of the collection, but that of the creative team, the models, and the people of Galliano's social circle.

It's a nostalgic reminder of the wondrous spectacle that used to be the Dior runway show.

I'm so proud to own this amazing book which is sold-out now.

Those pictures are incredible and show how the exit of John Galliano from Dior was a mistake !

Roxanne can you do the same book regarding McQueen?
