The Order #1

The Mutt: An Order Series Short Story

Rate this book
I, Ervyn Morryés of the Black Mountain clan, know all about control.

As the only fair-haired Dark Elf in the Highlands, I had to learn to control my fists and my temper in the face of derision.

To become the best archer amongst my peers, I had to learn to control my breathing and my movements.

But the day the half-breed called Lochan Féyes arrived at the training camp, my discipline faltered. Because—sweet gods—when I am around that aloof, blue-eyed assassin, my need is uncontrollable.

I wanted him from the start. From the very first time I laid eyes on him.

To say I was pretty impressed by this is a bit of an understatement. So much to love packed into about 40 pages.Part of The Order Series which will be three short stories followed by a novel (according to the Authors website)

When they meet at a training camp Ervyn is captivated by Lochan and he's determined to have him.....

His eyes were blue—so intensely the colour almost appeared offensive. Fuck, it offended me.(...)I wanted those eyes on me.

Lochan is a half-breed.Born to an influential Elven Clan.A Hybrid-A Mutt. He's aloof, refined, and the more indifferent he becomes to Ervyn, the more Ervyn desires him.

Ervyn is a Dark Elf but stands out due to his, almost, white blonde hair.Training as an Archer to join the Queen's Gaurd....but is his life destinated to take another path after meeting Lochan?

I don't know how she's done it but this Author has pulled me right into this story. For a short read she's managed to set the scene and introduce some captivating characters.

And.....the sexual tension is more than delicious...trust me,these two had me swooning.

Available on KU, this looks set to be a great series.

Would definitely recommend.

➦1, 2, 3, commence the usual whining after reading a short story:

➦Why so short, man?

➦Can you maybe, I don't know, add another... say... 500 pages to this goodie so I can continue salivating over these hot elven creatures? Speaking of elves.

➦This is what I imagine these two like, their hair might be backwards but what the f ever. Even though it's been years since I've played Lineage or any kind of mmorpg, I am still a huge fan of anything fantasy, so I'm always on board to read about mystical creatures that are masters of warfare. I do love me some good pew pew too.

➦I am getting carried away here. All I want to say is that I'm very impressed with the writing and amazed at what this author was able to achieve in just so few pages. It left me wanting more and I'm now moving on to reading book #2 The Highlander by Kasia Bacon

Yet another re-read 16th April 2021.
This time I’m caching up before I start The Scouts.

Having seen lots of 4 and 5* reviews coming through for this incredibly short read (which according to Amazon is just 29 pages long) I was intrigued.

This book is so much more than it's length, it doesn't read or feel anything like the short story it is and I'm hooked and left wanting more.

It takes place in an Elf training camp where Lochan Féyes a half-breed born to an influential Elven clan, but brought up by humans is all everyone can talk about. He's unusual, a hybrid, a mutt but if you didn't know it would be difficult to tell apart from his blue eyes.
He's cool, calm and lethal and Ervyn is obsessed but Lochan is disinterested to the point of walking away every time Ervyn tries to engage him.

Ervyn is also different, he's the only fair-haired Dark Elf and this book is entirely from his POV, he's also an archer so we have the whole Legolas thing going on (well in my head at least) which is always good.

Even with the great reviews this book surprised me.
I'm a picky reader who very rarely gives 5* and for me to even consider giving a book this short 5* gives you some indication of how much I enjoyed it now I'm left waiting for The Highlander which is the follow up to this from Lochan's POV.

Reread April 2021

Reread in preparation for book 3! Still love it!

Reread November 2018

I had forgotten how much I loved this. Kasia has a way to weaving a tale in such few words.
“I perceived winning Lochan Féyes’ heart, and making him mine, not as a goal—but an imperative.”

Honestly, I hardly ever rate a short story 5 stars. But this was amazing. It drew me in from the first sentence. It never felt like a short story. The writing was phenomenal. I can't wait for more. Thanks Dia for putting this story and this author on my radar.

*Very* short, but with a good bit of build up to where the story is going, so I'm looking forward to the 2nd short, coming out at the end of this month.

Two words.

Fucking! Fabulous!! (Scuse my language)

This bridges everything I love and want from high fantasy and when mixed with MM, you’ve got one awesome setup for an uh-mazing series!!

Of course, my only complaint is that this was way too short! I want to gobble up ALL the books but I don’t want to be without! Regardless, I look forward to future indulgences but I must pace myself!

I can’t thank my friend Michaelle enough for urging me to read this short story. When I added this book to my TBR, she told me that I needed to read all the books of this author and it got me really curious. So as soon as I woke up this morning, I read this one and let me say, ”what a great way to wake up!”. 💜❤️💙

The story is very short but this is only the prelude of upcoming novel “The Elven Vice”. There will be two MCs in the story, Ervyn and Lochan. Ervyn is a highlander dark elf and Lochan is an elf-human hybrid of aristocracy. The story is about how these two first met focusing on Ervyn’s PoV. I can’t say how much I loved and enjoyed this short story and I can’t wait to read the actual full novel. Love, love, loveeed it! 💗 💕 💗 I also love the fact that the author is a linguist .. as a language and literature enthusiast myself, I adore linguists and authors. And the combination of these two, 😏 I’m sure she will become my automatic purchase in the future. And I really enjoy the fact that she included a glossary at the end of the short story. May be that’s only me but I really love it when authors include glossary and explain the characters, places and names in vivid details. I think it helps reading to be really fun and more fascinating. 😊

4.5 HEARTS--

I wanted his attention, but he refused to give it to me.
So I had to find a way to claim it.

This story... listen, this story? It's phenomenal. And for just 41 pages, it packs a wallop into a fantasy world I want to be a part of.

The Mutt by new author Kasia Bacon is a prequel of sorts set in the Order universe, a fantasy based world with a contemporary feel. The author begins with a note stating the characters would not let up until she told their beginning. I personally want to thank Lochan and Ervyn. And I also want to let them know, I hope they nag the author (I mean it in the sweetest way possible) because this a winning concept and the novel needs to be out like yesterday.

Highland Dark elf, Ervyn, sees his man at training camp and wants his eyes on him. His man, Lochan, half human/half elf aka mutt, doesn't know it yet but he's been claimed. The aloof, talented assassin in training doesn't notice anyone and it perplexes and frustrates Ervyn. Nothing gets the blue eyed half breed's attention. Ervyn is set to be an archer once training camp is completed. It's a family tradition. Watching Lochan tests what he wants, Lochan's skills are some of the best seen. And he just wants to bask in his greatness.

And kiss him too.

"There was a fair amount of feral in that grin. I longed to be the one to tame the predator in him."

Fantasy fans this is going to be a winner. The world building, the taste that the author introduces is layered. There is even a language! And if you love reading sexual tension as much as I do, this story is filled with it. That even a mere kiss blew my top.

Plus the elves are reminiscent of Prince Nuada from Hellboy, who I have a major nerd boner for. So anything remotely written like the (misunderstood) bad guy with dark elves, emotionally stunted communication, baggage, sword and killing skills...I am ALL over it.

My one complaint is probably going to be it should have been longer. But that's the greed talking.

The author states this is a beginning and it reads just like that. We know the two men (late teens at this point, the cusp of adulthood) will have a deeper story as they hint at the future from the beginning. The story while filled with sexual tension, doesn't have an overabundance of sex. This works highly because it made me want to know more and appreciate every second either two interacted.

"What are you doing?" he breathed.
"I want to kiss you. If you want that too, you'll say, "Please, Ervyn."
[...]
"Please, Ervyn," he said in a guttural voice.

Have I mentioned there is a hint of future D/s? Someone's possessive. I'm all about it.

I haven't been as impressed with a short story in sometime.  If the author continues with the rich writing, she'll have a fan in me. I'm kind of in love with this couple already.

Highly recommended especially for fans of fantasy, elves, assassins and cool concepts.

This sexy short story introduces us to the world of elves....and let's be honest, who doesn't like elves ?? This little gem is an introduction to new series this author is writing. "The Elven Vice" will be the first novel about Evryn and Lochan.

The books opens in some kind of training facility for elves. It is entirely written in the voice of Evryn, the only fair-haired Dark Elf in the Highlands. He is also an archer, so guess who he made me think of ;)

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor legolas + gif

A new elf has just arrived at the training facility..and not just any kind of elf. Lochan is a halfbreed, part human and part elvish. In other words...a Mutt.

Evryn is smitten right from the start and he has only one thing on his mind....making Lochan his.

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor I want you so much

Evryn tries his very best to get Lochan's attention....I liked Evryn's character, he was very bold :P

Lochan didn't stand a chance at rejecting him ;)

I really liked the writing style of this author and as far as introductions go, this was pretty good. I was actually very surprised by the steam level and the humor in this book....and hey...there is even some Elvish !!!!

" Masturbar tu-ehr uncäil assi iré "

" Have you just told him to go wank his uncle's donkey ? "

I'm very curious to see where this story is gonna go, it definitely captured my attention. It was very short though and it felt unfinished (which I guess it is, because it's an introcution). So as far character- and worldbuilding, there wasn't much. Hopefully this will be different with the full novel. I love elves, so I will surely give the upcoming novel a try.

Because excuse my french but damn, Kasia Bacon.

******

The story is quite brief, yet it managed to immensely pique my interest for the rest of the series. With personality, wit and succinctly vivid descriptions, these 30+ pages left an impression. More than a regular short story, this felt like a meaningful snippet of a larger whole.

Through the two equally intriguing MCs, Dark Elf archer Ervyn in one hand (whose 1st person POV is the one narrating) and half-breed assassin Lochan in the other, author Kasia Bacon manages to enthrall me with her ability to pepper in so many intriguing world-building details and lore, yet without foregoing the blossoming development in dynamics between the two leads.

While the lust and attraction are very much of the insta variety in this one (because, hello, 30 pages after all), I wasn't really bothered by it much (these two had more chemistry in their few scenes here than a lot of couples do in full novels lol). If anything, it made me even more interested to see the depths their connection will reach in future installments.

Plus I also personally can't wait to get inside the head of Lochan soon, who came across as the silent and stoic type, but who shielded so beautifully when it came to Ervyn.

Now excuse me while I go add everything else related to this series to my TBR lol.

What a fantastic little read. And I’m not using fantastic because of the genre (this is about elves, yes, but this could be any place in the world, an atemporal society populated with warriors—hot, gorgeous and funny long haired warriors, to be more specific—) but I’m using the word because this was fabulous, a beautifully written short, a love story between a mutt and a Highlander, about their beginning, their first kiss and touches and the way the blonde Dark Elf (what a nice paradox, eh?) will do anything to be with the powerful half breed.

“He’d become a menace against which I was weaponless”

42 pages... and still Kasia Bacon manages to deliver a detailed and attractive universe with beautiful words and with a weird gift that I’ve been noticing in her work: she can transmit in short stories more than some full length books can.

42 pages! I want more, a lot more. So I’m starting The Highlander right now, to know more about Ervyn Morryés and Lochan Féyes because dear author, what kind of appetizer was this? I want my main curse, the big one, with my wine (leave the bottle, please) and my table-talk. Maybe even a nap (I’m from Spain after all)

Highly recommend! and not just for fantasy fans I really believe this universe could work for anyone.

The most penetrating blue eyes.

I loved, loved, loved this short book! It is the prequel to the first book in the series. The introduction to the story. But I just can't wait to read more about these great characters and their amazing world!! ❤️

I was hooked from the very first page. I was dying to read more, curious and excited to discover their fantastic world. And we get a glimpse to such an interesting story.

Loved everything about it: the names of the characters, the descriptions, the awesome writing style! It also made me chuckle a few times.

For a very short novella this one had A LOT of action and some pretty HOT scenes. Some were unexpected, but I am all for this kind of stories. I hate it when the characters are predictable... Here it was not the case and I was SO happy with the dynamic of their dialogues, especially when Ervyn got to make demands. *so hot*

I will definitely read the next books, because I got a feeling this is going to be my new favorite MM series!

Really liked the writing! Really liked it!

If you 're iffy about paranormal, like me, don't be. There are elves, but the setting reminds me of Ancient Greece or maybe Greek mythology.

Very short, and despite the author doing a great job with the world building, the story is surprisingly focused on the MCs. Not a lot of steam but LOADS of sexual tension.

I'm invested.

This was a very immersive and atmospheric little M/M fantasy story, but it was way too short – even shorter than the mere 40 pages GR forewarned me about, with the story actually coming to an abrupt end at the 60% mark of the Kindle edition.

I can’t quite explain why this irked me so much! Honestly, I’m usually very fond of short stories and novellas, when done right, but here it simply made me grumpy to be drawn in and then left wanting.

I can only surmise that my reaction is due to the fact that this was so impressively (and beautifully) written, teasing an intriguing story of badass elves falling in love, leading me to be so invested, so damn quickly, and making it impossible to feel anything but cheated that it wasn’t longer!

Thankfully, there are more stories set in this promising fantasy universe, so I can’t rightly be too miffed… unless the next story pulls a similar bait and switch tactic, leaving me hanging yet again, and then I might just explode!

Reread in preparation for 'The Scouts'. It's such a great start to the series! Love the vibes between Lochan and Ervyn!

original review

What a fabulous start to what I hope will be a really great series!

I’m not heavily into fantasy, but, omg, Lochan and Ervyn blew me away big time!
I was sucked into the story immediately and basically read book 1 and 2 in one big deep breath.
Fabulous writing, excellent UST, lots of feels! I am totally invested.

My only complaint is the same so many other readers have mentioned:
I want more. So much more. These novellas could be easily twice or three times the length!

He was deadly. Calm. Steady. Cold. Disinterested. So self-assured that he seemed arrogant. I wanted to bring him down a peg. Teach him a lesson. Break him. Taste him. Make him beg me to kiss him. I wanted his attention, but he refused to give it to me. So I had to find a way to claim it. 😲😲😲

Ervyn is fascinated by Lochan, but he keeps avoiding him. However, a Dark Elf from the Highlands does not let this dissuade him. 😉
I love this brief introduction and getting to know the two characters in this book told from Ervyn's POV. Just perfect for a short prelude, wonderfully written.

That was short and sweet.

“It was at least sixty paces, sir.” I shrugged, but faced with his sour grimace, I added quickly, “And no, that’s not it. The thing is, I want in the Scouts.” Ha! he is following him.

This was my first Kasia Bacon book and I never wrote a review for it!

New-to-me author and I love that the author is a linguist and put a lot of imagination into the world and languages. The prequel novella has little maps and a glossary!

Two MCs at an elf training camp preparing to qualify for specific roles in the military. It's quite short and wouldn't really be a good standalone, but it's a great way to see if you enjoy the author's writing and world-building.

I loved it, but the language setting sold me on it. I'll be continuing the series.

What a frustratingly short introduction to two very addictive characters and world. I loved it!

“The shock and pleasure of being touched by him so casually tingled all the way up to my scalp.”

More Dark Elves, more blue eyes, more Morryes, and more Lochan please. More, more, more!

Off to read book 2…..

I've never given 5 stars to a short book but Kasia knows how to do it justice. ❤😍

I was enthralled by the story from the first page, the confidence and self assurance that Ervyn exudes from the get-go didn't annoy me but intrigued me, and Lochan being all badass and mysterious? PANTIES DOWN LADIES AND GENTLEMAN!!! They were hot together and passionate and unassuming and just lovely!!

This was in Ervyn's pov and being in his head was awesome, I loved the pace, the writing, the settings, everything. 😫🤩😍❤

Absolutely amazing. I love being back with these two when it was brand new. So dreamy and so hot.

***2nd read: 8/25/2017
Second time was just as good as the first. No, possibly better because I can now dive into Lochan's POV!***

Where the hell did this come from?

OMG! This was amazing. I adored Lochan and Evryn so damn much! Their chemistry is off the charts hot and I want more.

More.

I just want more of this world.

The author did an amazing job of world building in very few pages that you pulls into the book fast, you see all the training that is being done and you get a sense of what is important. Sure, the psychical is what first attracts Evyrn to Lochan but isn't that what attracts most of us in beginning? Come on, that initial want is what gives us the blessed UST and who doesn't love UST? Now, while we get the psychical we also get a building of an emotional connection between the men and a foreshadowing of so many layers that are going to be exposed on both sides of this story and not just the layers needed to get into bed, or against walls, over fallen trees or anywhere else these two want to get it on and *takes a breath* Um...

What was I saying?

Oh yeah, the layers.

So many hints of what could happen and we are told we could get a short of young Lochan? Whoa. I am all on that because who wouldn't want to know more about a half breed who has so much charisma, strength and power with a side of vulnerability? I mean, why did he answer that one word about his tattoos and OMG I have questions and want so much more!!!

That last line though? Fuck me! Seriously???? When does the next book come out? I have serious wants. Wants and needs and, yup. So good.

Cool intro to this new fantasy series

ETA: Revising my stars up one because it actually was very impressive for just 30 pages.

I liked this intro to a new fantasy series from an author I've not read before.

It's hard to do world building in such a short piece but Kasia Bacon did an excellent job in setting down the feel and tone of this setting.

There's a gentle humour as well which had me chuckling a couple of times and I'm looking forward to finding out more about these two.
