Barack Obama: Out of Many, One by Shana Corey, Illustrator- James Bernardin- Hindi language translation by Arvind Gupta- Children’s Historical Fiction Picture Book- The book starts out with Barack Obama as a child in Hawaii. His father was an Afro-American while his mother was white. His father left and they resided with his grandparents Gramps and Tuts. In 1967, his mother re-married and they shifted to Indonesia. When he was 10 -year old, he was awarded scholarship for study at Hawaii. He worked to get jobs for others during his vacation. He decided to go to law school. While there, he met his future wife named Michelle. They had two daughters named Malia and Shasha. Barack decided he wanted to run for senate, and he won. All of his supporters told him he should run for president so he finally decided to. He announced it on January 9th, 2007 that he would run for office, and won president on January 10th, 2010. He was the first Afro- American president in United States of America, and also the most votes for any president before. Coloured illustrations help the reader to relate to the story. I have read the Hindi language translation of this book.

This book highlighted Barack Obama's life before and when he was elected as President of the United States. This is a great elementary level book to allow students to understand how he became President. The illustrations were amazing in the books and helped visualize the different parts of his life as they came about. This book shows many of the struggles Barack went through in his early life and shows that before presidency, the presidents are just normal people. Good independent reading book.

I read the revised edition of this book but I am unsure of the changes that were made. There was an interesting combination of illustration and real pictures used in this book that felt a bit random. However, the information was detailed and given in a story format which helps engage young readers.

This book was actually rather enlightening. I learned a lot about President Obama that I did not know before such as the extent of his childhood background. It tells kids the basis of his platform in a sense that they can understand. The book is made for "level three readers" which are children grades one through three. All of the vocabulary in the book is something these children could grasp easily.

The font is rather simple. It is in a larger text that is black and is often, with the exception of a few pages, on a plain white background. This makes it easier for the kids or even adults reading the book to actually see the words. On the pages where the words are not on a white background, it is a little distracting, but with focus you can still read it which is the important part.

There are very few pages that are full-bleed or even double page spreads because there is so much content in the book that there would not be enough room in the typical children's picture book. A lot of the illustrations are what I would describe as blurbs in respect to how they are put on the page where the edges are blurred and it looks like they are gently added or almost faded into the frame/page.

The quality of the pictures were actually very impressive which is nice when reading something like a biography that can sometimes make a child lose interest. The medium for the pictures look as if they would be done in watercolor with the outline in something more prominent. The detail is amazing and you can tell that there is a lot of detail in each and every character that is in the book, even people in the background that are not necessarily named in the story-line. The very end of the book shows an actual picture of Barack and Michelle which helps kids relate the illustrations to what they see in real life.

I would highly recommend showing this book to your children as an example of a biography. It was excellent.

1. Awards the book has received (if any): No awards
2. Appropriate grade level(s):1st- 3rd
3. Original 3-line summary: This biography is told as a story, rather than being segmented by topic, and begins with Barack Obama’s early childhood. It goes on to describe the numerous instances throughout his life where he felt out of place due to his race as well as how he overcame social norms and these feelings of doubts to first become a U.S. Senator, and later the forty-fourth president of America. At the end of the story the author asks the reader to reflect on how his/her own story fits into the larger story of America, as Obama’s did.
4. Original 3-line review: The underlying theme of this biography that racial equality has not always existed, and is still not perfect in society, is a tough one to explain to young children, but an important one. This text does a great job of providing the historical context for this issue to children, while also using Obama’s life story as a source to inspire readers to dream big, hope, and believe that they too can make a difference.
5. 2-3 possible in-class uses: This book could be used to teach the difference between fiction and non-fiction texts. It could also be used to compliment social studies lessons on presidents. An additional use for this book could be for a creative writing assignment where students reflect on how their story and how they can make a difference.

Transitional

This was a really great biography of President Obama. The illustrations were nice and were clearly supposed to be President Obama. The text was a nice simplified biography of his life up to the point that he was elected for the first time, and gave specific dates when necessary.

This is a transitional reader for children who have mastered reading, I'd say late first grade, second grade. Some of the words are a little difficult, meaning-wise, but I think a lot of the vocabulary could spark more research. For example, it mentions that he was elected to the Senate, but there is no explanation of what the Senate is. I think that is an essential piece of information that a child should learn more about while on this topic.

I think that all children should have some basic information about the president of the country in which they live, so I would want to use a book like this with such nice, clear information about the president, though by the time I'm teaching there will be another president to read about! I would definitely look more into books like this for simple biographies.

I do wish there was an additional photograph or two. The entire book, save the last page, is illustration. The last page is a nice photo of President and Mrs. Obama meeting some children, but I would have liked to see another real photo or two.

"Barack Obama: Out of Many, One" is a children's historical fiction picture book. The book starts out with Barack as a child, and we learn who his parents are and where he grew up. We learn that he grew up in Hawaii and was always confused where he would fit in. He grew up and and decided to go to law school. He was the first black president in United States of America, and also the most votes for any president before. He is now president and will be for one more year.

I liked this book because it is very informing and a child would probably have no background ideas of the president before reading this book. It talks about his early life and that he went through struggles, which can be ensuring for the child to know that anything is possible even if things are not great at first. It is a short book so it can be read before bed time. The illustrations are very realistic and interesting. It is a cool story and very informing on the president.

This is a nice little non-fiction read for students a bit more confident with their reading skills but not yet ready to leave the comfortable realm of picture books. Children covering presidential history, or wishing to learn about our current leader, can use this as an addition resource or just for an entertaining and informative read.

A well written biography that tells the story of the 44th president of the USA. The illustrations were very good and the colors great. The story wasn’t too long to too short for young readers.
