Cole Coonce has written about drag racing, drag queens, drum machines, sex machines, ketamine, Kraftwerk, the Land Speed Record, the record business, bicycles, Japanese drifters, high plains drifters, UFOs, quantum mechanics, shade-tree mechanics, famous nobodies that slept on his couch and Mark E. Smith.
He lives in Los Angeles and probably wouldn’t live anywhere else.
Meditations on Maximum Velocity, indeed... This is a blistering dissection of the 20th century in the guise of a free-from History of the Land Speed Record.
Speed, chrome, free will, hot rodding and the zeitgeist are over. Consider this a requiem then.
INFINITY OVER ZERO, KeroseneBomb's debut 2002 release received a whole lotta' hype:
"Cole Coonce is a VTEC Tom Wolfe, a literary autojournalist tricked out with nitrous oxide and night-vision, writing for The Fast and the Furious generation."--Adam Fisher, Senior Editor, WIRED magazine
"Imagine Dennis Hopper from Apocalypse Now writing a history of the Land Speed Record"--Mark Vaughn, AUTOWEEK.
"Tonight my butt's got a permanent ring around it after an extended stay in the library, reading Cole Coonce's 'Top Fuel Wormhole.' Coonce is a Steinbeck/Kerouac /London banana split, and may just earn HOT ROD its first Pulitzer."--Larry Tolle, HOT ROD magazine
