Jennifer Shane has opened her own card-making business in her hometown of Rebel Forge, Virginia. But it’s hard work just staying afloat—especially when you lose one of your best customers....
Jennifer is struggling to keep Custom Card Creations open for business, so her aunt Lillian snags her a delightful (and cheaper) apartment by the lake. Then Jennifer hears that the apartment is haunted by the ghost of its last occupant—who doesn’t like to share. Meanwhile she also has to put up with the unwanted advances of her downstairs neighbor, her ex-fiancé, and a drunken deputy.
Things only get worse when a tragic accident kills one of her most beloved card club members, Maggie Blake. Then Jennifer receives a handcrafted card from Maggie. Written before she died, it warns that someone is trying to murder her. No one is above suspicion, not even her card club. Jennifer must investigate before she loses another good customer to more grim tidings....
The most unrealistic part of this cozy mystery by Elizabeth Bright might be the fact that Jennifer Shane can make a living running a card making shop, especially since her sister owns the scrapbooking shop on the same block. Even in the heyday of paper crafting, did anyone really need that many supplies? Still, that doesn't take away from the cute, cozy mystery.
When one of Jennifer's best customers (and member of her crafting club) dies in a car accident, she's devastated -- and then she gets the card victim Maggie mailed before her death, saying how someone was trying to kill her.
Plot and character-wise, this is a fairly standard cozy mystery, with an assortment of wacky characters and skeptical law-enforcement officers (this time, Jennifer's big brother). The part where she moves into a haunted apartment is mentioned, then that plot line is dropped. Hopefully it's mentioned in other books in the series, because it's an interesting idea.
I started reading this book because of the first paragraph which reads that a ghost was trying to kill the protagonist. I should have stopped there.
Jennifer Shane is annoying, self-centered, and obnoxious. She treats men like dirt but for some strange reason she's so attractive to them they're falling over their feet to get to her anyway. (She has a guy in love with her but finds him annoying because he (gasp) wants to spend time with her.) Are there no other single - nice - women in this town?
Her Aunt Lillian steamrolls over her every chance she gets - which explains why Jennifer's brother doesn't like her much.
I'm also surprised she doesn't weigh a ton considering she eats nothing but take-out and fast food. This woman needs to learn to cook. She never works out and doesn't even takes walks and complains to herself when her aunt wants to take a walk with her!
But what got me was the fact that she moves into an apartment with a ghost (no spoiler, it's in the blurb) and the day she moves in she leaves her two cats alone in the place while she goes to clean her old apartment. For hours. And is surprised when she returns late at night and her cats are in their carriers and won't come out. Honestly? Would it be that much trouble to have taken them with? Sorry, but this irritated me.
Needless to say, I never finished the book and won't be reading any more of these.
The 2nd book in A Card-Making Mystery. I prefer to read a series in order but I had this book and was in a cozy mystery mood. Jennifer owns a card making store in a small town in northern VA. When a member of her card making club dies in a car accident and Jennifer receives a handmade card from the dead woman saying someone is trying to murder her she and her aunt Lillian begin investigating. Who murdered their friend and will that person try to kill Jennifer and Lillian?
Note: the Goodreads description that talks about underwater diving does not go with this book. Cute idea. Unfortunately for this series, the main character is just not like able. Rude, abrasive, and defensive, and don't even ask about her love life. From giving out mixed signals to seriously over reacting to flat out man hating. Ugh, I managed to finish the book, but just barely.
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It had earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
I only got halfway through the book, but had to quit when the main character gets huffy when asked out on a date by her new neighbor. "...you're not totally repulsive, but believe me when I tell you that you're not that nice and you're certainly not good-looking enough to make it worth my while to take your problems on, too." Can we say obnoxious? I think we can.
It didn't help that I was bored or that the main character is apparently just so great that her ex-boyfriend wants to date her again, a deputy is stalking her, and then there's the new guy in her building that she's blowing off.
Please, I couldn't read another word and keep a straight face. When I read a cozy, I want to read a murder mystery, not a someone's idea of how great it would be to be so desirable to men that they just follow her around like puppies or mad dogs, take your pick.
Not my cuppa.

This is book two in the Cardmaking mystery series, and it too has a decent plot, amusing side characters, and made for a nice evening’s read. The author tends to go a bit far into the wacky, but stops herself before she goes too far. All in all, another nice read and a mental note has been added to get further books in the series as they come out.
Enjoyed this book although there were some parts that seemed to drag a bit, more detail than I cared to have at the moment - guess in the long run it explained how everyone interacted with each other. Was a fun read and we all know how the romance part ended.
