Ruth is an ‘ordinary’ young woman, content with her quiet marriage, her little son, her job as a make-up artist. Her face though is hideously disfigured. Men look away – but ‘Doctor Johnny’, a famous plastic surgeon, married to the actress Ruth serves, makes her beautiful. ‘Your life will never be the same again,’ he warns her. ‘Are you ready for that?’
Ruth thinks she is. But she is innocent and insecure and she is overwhelmed by the physical and emotional demands of film stars, friends, husband and child. She discovers, painfully, just what being beautiful means.
