Rate this book
The diversity of the human beings that populate our planet is matched by the vast variety of geography and geological formations on Earth. An international team of geographers and cartographers gathered and compiled unimaginable amounts of information in order to create this atlas. Divided into three sections - Planet Earth, People and Society, and Regions of the World - this volume provides information about forms of government, official languages, population density, religions, currency and climate. Thematic maps devoted to vegetation, climate, energy and population as well as earthquakes and volcanoes are complemented by introductory texts about the origins of the universe, the structure of the solar system, as well as the origins of the Earth and its continents. This work is intended for all those who want to discover the secrets of the universe, understand the beginnings of our planet Earth, or more deeply understand the history of humankind.

Geographica World Atlas and Encyclopedia
Geographia. (n.d.). Geographica World Atlas and Encyclopedia. New York, NY: Random House.
Reviewed By: Sarah Cherry
Type of Reference- Geographical Reference
Description- The Geographica World Atlas reflects the most recent world changes such as the return of Hong Kong and Macao China, new boundaries in post-apartheid South Africa, the establishment of the Canadian territory of Nunavut, and the revision of Zaire to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The atlas also comes with a CD-ROM including informative text.
Scope and Content- The book includes two essays in the introduction, “Planet Earth” and “People and Society.” It has information about all the continents and includes many pictures. There is also a short description of each and key facts listed in a “Fact File.” The atlas also displays a three dimensional global which shows where each continent is in relation to the other one. This is a nice feature.
Accuracy, Authority, and Bias- This book was produced by members of Random House, which is a well-known publishing company.
Arrangement- In addition to the eight region atlas in the main section there is also a complete index. A short description and key facts about each continent are also included. The atlas refers to each continent separately not to confuse kids.
Relation to Similar Work: It is similar to the Seventh Edition National Geographic Atlas of the World.
Timeline and Permanence: I would updated this reference every five years.
Cost: 57.97
Rationale for Selection- The information is current and arranged so that it is easily understood by kids. I also like that it has a CD-ROM because the computers are used as a great source of information so I feel this format would be used often. Students will also enjoy the “Fact File” as a great reference for social studies classes.
Professional Review- It was reviewed in School Library Journal.
