Every Second Something Happens: Poems for the Mind and Senses

Rate this book
Poems that tickle all of a young reader's senses. Children create order in their world by relying on their five senses and their experiences. In this engaging anthology, young readers are inspired to use those senses and experiences to discover the myriad delights of poetry. Educators Christine San José and Bill Johnson have selected more than sixty poems—some classic, some contemporary, some from kids themselves—to amuse young readers and spark their imaginations. These poems tell stories, create unusual sounds, and paint delightful pictures to appeal to children's sense of wonder. A note to parents on how to use the book is included.

This was a very engaging anthology that helps students use their senses through poems. The book is very simple and would be a great introduction to poems for a classroom. I thought the poems were fun to read and would work great with young learners. There was a good variety of poems throughout this book.
The poems were unique and I think students and young readers would really appreciate them. This would be a great book to have when learning about senses or poems. I would recommend this book because it helps them learn about senses while relating them to other things in life. I liked the illustrations in the book because they made the poems even more enjoyable.

This poetry anthology provides a look at the senses through poetry. The author compiled the poems into sections based on senses. There is a section at the beginning as a note to help with how to use the poems to help children learn to love poetry. I liked the variety of poems to choose from and the interesting way the book was put together.
Great book to help foster children’s appreciation of poetry. There are many different type of poems inside and you could have groups find one they like and maybe illustrate it themselves. There is also a great opportunity to add different poems to lesson about the senses.

Poems are very unique to the readers it helps them feel, learn about new things and learn to rhythm for young children. This book simply shows young children about many different things that go around in the world like knowing what a bird is, a reflection is or what simply the sun is to the earth and why it is a huge part of the solar system. I would recommend this book to young children to learn about vents in their life that they may not understand about.

This simple, cute and totally kid-friendly book served as a great intro-level sampling of poems for my kids. It was fun to read and especially fun to watch, as well as listen to my children's interpretation of some of the entries. Because kids provided some of the content, it added flavor in a unique way.

This would be a nice resource to refer to for National Poetry Month.
