James Robert "Jim" Davis is an American cartoonist who created the popular comic strip Garfield. Other comics that he has worked on are Tumbleweeds, Gnorm Gnat, Slapstick, and a strip about Mr. Potato Head.
Jim Davis was born in Fairmount, Indiana, near Marion, where he grew up on a small farm with his father James William Davis, mother Anna Catherine (Carter) Davis, brother Dave, and 25 cats. Davis' childhood on a farm parallels the life of his cartoon character Garfield's owner, Jon Arbuckle, who was also raised on a farm with his parents and a brother, Doc Boy. Jon, too, is a cartoonist, and also celebrates his birthday on July 28. Davis attended Ball State University. While attending Ball State, he became a member of the Theta Xi fraternity. He earned the dubious honor of earning one of the lowest cumulative grade point averages in the history of the university, an honor incidentally shared with Late Show host David Letterman.
Davis as of 2007 resides in Muncie, Indiana, where he and his staff produce Garfield under his company, Paws, Inc., begun in 1981. He was married to Carolyn, a singer and elementary teacher whom he met while both were attending college, and has a son named James with her. However, the couple divorced, and Davis since 2000 has been married to Jill, Paws' senior vice president of licensing, who has worked there approximately 25 years.
Ironically, Davis did not own cats when he started Garfield because of Carolyn's allergies, but they owned a Labrador retriever named Molly. With Jill, the family has expanded to include children Ashley and Chris; three grandchildren, Chloe, Carly and Cody; cats, Spunky and Nermal; and a dog, Pooky.
I remember watching this as a tv special when I was a kid. The tv special was better than the book. I think Garfield really needed the action componenet of animation in this outing. It was still fun to revisit, though.
A great and above all, funny, comic book that I picked up for $3 at my local comic book store together with a bunch of other comics. It kinda reminds me of the annual comic books that usually releases around christmas time here in Sweden as what we call them; "jultidningar". I'm glad I picked this one up, because It's a riot seeing Garfield and Odie being up to no good but how it all works out in the end for our four legged friends.
Ohhh man this one has a special place in my heart. I read it but I heard the TV special playing in my head.
I think this one was so rememberable because other than general nostalgia, it had one of the most heartbreaking scenes I've ever seen in anything on tv. 'So Long Old Friend' that's all I'll say. Seriously heart shattering. Even with the happy ending......nah man. I was just traumatised by that sadness that I can't compute that happy ending.
It's been decades since I first saw this special and it will still be with me in the decades to come.
I normally love the Garfield books this one not so much. I know it is based off the tv show, but that shouldn’t have changed how Garfield, Jon, and Odie looks. This one was drawn more in an amateurish style. It was hard to get into the style. Also it seems as if all of the characters were lacking some of their quarks.
I love garfield! This is one of the three garfield comic books I own (the other two being Second Garfield Treasury and Garfield on the Town ). This one is my second favorite, the garfield treasury is first, but it has my very favorite part. It's when garfield wakes up in the middle of the night and smells food. He goes into the kitchen and begins messing with it all. My favorite one is the potato salad one :D
The last thing were john yells at garfield isn't in the book though. Overall this is a good addition to the garfield comic, but it's just not the same as the original ones run in the newspaper. This one is based of a show and it just doesn't work out right...
