Blue Bay Palace
Exposing the extremes of life in a developing country, this compelling novel of doomed love shows how poverty, class divisions, and ramshackle housing become even harder to bear when luxurious resorts and rich tourists arrive on the scene. Nathacha Devi Pathareddy Appanah is a Mauritian-French author. She comes from a traditional Indian family.
She spent most of her teenage years in Mauritius and also worked as a journalist/columnist at Le Mauricien and Week-End Scope before emigrating to France.

ILLUSIONE
Con questa novella di novanta pagine mi si è presentata Appanah per la prima volta.
Non la sua prima però, trattandosi del secondo romanzo, ma la prima per me lettore.
Che sono andato avanti leggendo man mano quanto veniva tradotto in italiano: il successivo Le nozze di Anna e poi il suo vero esordio Le rocce di Poudre d’Or.
Appanah è andata avanti a scrivere, risultano altri sette titoli, ma le traduzioni in italiano si sono fermate lì, ai primi tre titoli. Che mi sono piaciuti tutti e tre.
Maya, la protagonista, proprio come la sua creatrice, Nathacha Appanah-Mouriquand, fa parte della comunità indiana emigrata secoli prima nell’isola circondata dall’Oceano Indiano (l’arcipelago di Mauritius). Ha sedici anni. E purtroppo per lei s’innamora di un giovane di un paio d’anni più grande di lei, Dave, che dirige il ristorante dell’albergo dove lei lavora come receptionist, il Blue Pay Palace del titolo. Purtroppo perché Dave come Maya ha origini indiane: e le loro caste sono ben diverse, quella di Maya in fondo alla scala sociale. E quindi è difficile prevedere un futuro roseo per il loro amore.
Il Blue Pay Palace è uno di quei resort di lusso sulla spiaggia, comunque dotato di infinite piscine, infestato da turisti occidentali che vanno lì a far vacanza. Alla domanda: ma non vi accorgete della povertà che c’è intorno, subito fuori dei vostri lussuosi hotel, non vi accorgete che la povertà s’accompagna a ingiustizia sociale? - la risposta di prammatica è: noi portiamo soldi e lavoro.
Tornando a Maya e Dave, il problema non si limita alle diverse caste di appartenenza: non è da trascurare il fatto che il ragazzo è piuttosto mollaccione, incapace di una decisione, spudoratamente propenso alla vita comoda e facile.
Anche se qualcun altro ha fatto scelte decisive al suo posto. Così è infatti: i suoi genitori gli hanno combinato un matrimonio con una ragazza che è il partito giusto.
Maya non sa nulla finché non legge delle nozze sul giornale.
Maya vuol dire illusione: nel caso della nostra Maya è soprattutto lei che si è illusa di poter avere una storia vera con Dave. E invece in un momento, senza preavviso, scopre di essere la ruota di scorta.
Ma Dave non vuol rinunciare a lei neppure dopo il matrimonio. E Maya non sa rinunciare a lui: forse perché ha solo sedici anni, forse perché è innamorata. O forse perché è stata illusa. Continuano a incontrarsi, non più nel lussuoso albergo, ora in uno di infima categoria.
Certo Dave parlando della ragazza che ha sposato non avrebbe dovuto lasciarsi sfuggire queste parole: A volte vorrei che morisse…
La mia lettura, più che dalla storia d’amore e vendetta, si è lasciata trasportare da come questa vicenda serve a illuminare un luogo geografico letterariamente poco esplorato e metta in luce uno spaccato sociale, con le sue gabbie, di grande interesse.

J'aime bien le style d'écriture de Nathacha Appanah qui, encore une fois, dans ce livre, arrive à transporter ses lecteurs dans l'univers de l'île Maurice, et plus particulièrement à Blue Bay et Mahebourg.
Même si c'est une histoire assez sombre, je me suis facilement laissée emporter par les émotions que ressent Maya. Je dirai que ce livre est simple et efficace. Facile à lire, chose que j'ai faite en un aprèm. Ce n'est pas tant une analyse de la société qui sépare les deux amoureux de deux classes sociales différentes (même si il y a quelques références à ça dans le texte), mais plus une description d'une histoire d'amour qui tourne mal (la problématique de la classe sociale étant dans le fond de l'histoire).
J'apprécie tellement le style de l'auteur (dans les Rochers de Poudre d'or ou encore Le Dernier Frère que ce livre, tout en étant beaucoup plus simple que les autres, m'a beaucoup plu.

Lettura decisamente scarsina. La materia poteva anche essere interessante, ma nessuno dei temi trattati viene adeguatamente sviluppato: né la differenza tra caste, né l’inganno, né la conseguente depressione della protagonista, che sfocia alla fine in un atto violento. Un racconto lungo che finisce per non dire assolutamente niente, benché sembri, a livello formale, volerlo fare, perché i personaggi rimangono del tutto sfuggenti e carenti da punto di vista psicologico.

Nonostante una scrittura semplice, le descrizioni sono molto efficaci, sia per l’ambientazione sia ai fini degli eventi e degli stati d’animo dei personaggi, di Maya soprattutto. Dave è un vero mollusco, ma lasciamo stare...
La storia è semplice, quasi scontata, la si può evincere dalla traccia del libro, quindi non sto qui a raccontarla tutta. Dirò solo che si tratta della storia d’amore tra due giovani di ceti (o meglio caste, visto che sono di origine indiana) diversi; un amore senza futuro, che sfocerà in tragedia.
Il contrasto sociale è forte: da una parte i residenti, molti dei quali poverissimi e immersi nel loro disagio, dall’altra il fasto sfrenato degli hotel di lusso frequentati dai turisti che sono tollerati perché in questo paradiso portano soldi.
Convivono spesso uno di fronte all’altro, due facce della stessa moneta.
Un territorio, quello dell’arcipelago di Mauritius, a suo modo affascinante, se non altro per la natura fantastica, tutta da scoprire.

Looking over some of my old posts about books, I've noticed a tendency to bend over backwards to find nice things to say in an attempt to seem fair-minded, to the point that I re-read the reviews and think they are a bit misleading. So I decided to be a bit harsher when necessary. This is one of those times.
I had problems with the prose style from the first page; it's trying too hard for a certain kind of literary gravitas that it can't manage, and as a result it is badly overwritten. In fact the combination of florid prose and a rather conventionally told love story reminded me above all of Mills and Boon: especially since it features a poor girl with a rich lover in an exotic location (although the 'exotic' part is fair enough). The main difference is that Mills & Boon novels have happy endings, and this book doesn't; in fact, one the love story starts going wrong, it gets a bit more interesting… but then it blows it with a melodramatic and unsatisfying ending.
On the positive side, it was very short.

The insights into living in "paradise" next door to a huge touristy hotel were interesting particularly as we recently were in Mauritius and some of philippe 's family are from there.
The rest... it felt overwritten and contrived. I think the author was trying to convey the feeling of that 1st love and how consuming it is but unfortunately just felt heavy handed.

Read for a Francophone Lit class. Was ok compared to some of our other reading, and found it interesting how much American pop culture played a role in it.

J’ai été complètement happée par Blue Bay Palace et j’étais déçue d’avoir fini le livre si vite. Appanah sait tenir les lectrices en haleine et son écriture est poétique et sensuelle. Ce que j’ai toutefois le plus apprécié c’est sa description de son pays natal, l’île Maurice. J’ai trouvé les premières pages remarquables sur l’origine de Maurice et sa nature mais aussi sur ses habitants encerclés par un horizon à la fois splendide mais aussi emprisonnant. Tout au long du roman, l’auteure montre bien l’omniprésence de la mer mais aussi les inégalités et le désœuvrement des habitants. Appanah a su lier son île au destin de l’héroïne Maya et c’est cela la vraie force du roman.

Tout au long du roman on sent le désespoir et la folie monter doucement, les événements s’enchaînent, sans aucun répit pour le lecteur, on retient son souffle, jusqu’au bout…

Belonging to the long-standing Indian community in that country, Appanah has written a little novella in French of jealousy and murder which is supported mainly by the exoticism of its locale. After all, were a writer to describe the affair of a low-caste woman with a high-caste man in India, people would merely shrug and say, 'Ho hum.' There's little new in this tale for a subcontinental reader, and possibly even for a watcher of Indian films - it's a cliche. The narrator, Maya, meets her dashing and confident lover when she is sixteen, and realises as time goes by that even as he loves her, he is too spineless to do anything about it, and will not stand up to his parents who want him to marry a suitable woman of his own class. He marries that woman but continues his affair with Maya, who, when she is not desperately missing him, is also constantly being reduced by the poverty of her circumstances and the contrast with the rich. There's no way such a tale can end well, surely? Nope. Everybody concerned is ruined. Not so much a crime novel, then; and as a social-commentary-with-romance, and no redemption at the end of it.

I read this in 2011. I felt like it did not reflect Mauritian life. The tone of the narration was morose. Not badly written, but morose. The ending bothered me a lot. But maybe madness isn't meant to be understood.
I'll try her other works soon. I won't judge her talents by one novel only :)
