About the author

Miguel Barnet, is one of Cuba's most distinguished writers and poets as well as a member of the island's National Assembly. He is also the president of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), an organization with more than 8,000 members. He is an outspoken intellectual, having studied first in the United States and later at the University of Havana. He is best known for his testimonial novel Biography of a Runaway Slave, Biografía de un Cimarrón in Spanish, but he has written dozens of other novels, poems and articles, including a number of stories for Cigar Aficionado. He's been called the Truman Capote of Cuba.

Barnet first came to national attention as the poet of La piedra fina y el pavorreal (1963) and the much-praised La sagrada familia (1967), a lyrical autopsy of petit bourgeois domestic life. Publication of Biografía de un cimarrón (1966; The Autobiography of a Runaway Slave, 1968), the first in an ethnic tetralogy of documentary narratives, brought almost immediate international acclaim and established him as an innovating pioneer of the testimonial genre in contemporary Latin America. La canción de Rachel (1969; Rachel's Song, 1991), Gallego (1981), and La vida real (1986) confirmed his reputation as Cuba's premier exponent of the documentary novel.

Crónica-biografía muy interesante. Escrito después de «Biografía de un cimarrón» tiene una oralidad un poco menos arriesgada pero conseguida al fin y al cabo, está muy bien contextualizada. Me ha gustado mucho, también la lectura política-castrista de hombre trabajador sin muchos recursos que se esfuerza en conseguir su objetivo etc etc que, diciendo el protagonista varias veces que no es un hombre político, se nota la injerencia direccionada de Barnet -que no deja de ser del PCC-.

Outra novela de testimonio de Miguel Barnet. Esta vez a historia é sobre Manuel Ruíz, un inmigrante galego que chega a Cuba a buscarse a vida. Pasando penurias e traballando moito, vai contando a vida na Cuba de principios do S. XX poñendo en valor a figura da inmigración galega e amosando como eran eses anos. É un gran documento para coñecer a historia de Cuba da primeira metade de século e paralelamente a de España, xa que nunha das poucas viaxes que fixo de volta á terra coincídelle coa guerra civil. O libro remata con él de vello e Fidel xa no poder.

Encántame as referencias a Galiza, a utilización en momentos do galego por parte do protagonista e que en cada inicio de capítulo pon unha estrofa dun poema de Rosalía de Castro. Foi enorme a pegada que deixamos os "gaitos" en Cuba.

La vida dura d'un emigrant gallec a Cuba.
A part de poder resseguir moments històrics de l'illa i d'Espanya, crec que el que més m'ha agradat i enganxat (i crec que és marca general de l'obra de Barnet) és el retrat digne i detallat que fa de la vida de la gent humil i treballadora.
Em fa especial il•lusió acabar aquest llibre el mateix dia que el darrer fet històric cubà que apareix al relat, 26 de Julio.

Gives a little insight into pre-Revolutionary Cuba and pre-War Spain through the eyes of a an immigrant. The writing is simple and the story lacks real insights which makes the book a little superficial. Cimarron was more interesting on that level.
