Viking I #2

The Outlaw Viking

Rate this book
As tall and striking as the Valkyries of legend, Dr Rain Jordan was proud of her Norse ancestors despite their warlike ways. But she couldn't believe her eyes when a blow to the head transported her to a nightmarish battlefield and she had to save the barbarian of her dreams.

He was a wild-eyed berserker whose deadly sword could slay a dozen Saxons with a single swing, yet Selik couldn't control the saucy wench from the future. He considered Rain a prisoner, and he longed to avail himself of her medical skills—and her considerable knowledge of the male anatomy—but the infuriating woman had ideas of her own. If Selik wasn't careful, the stunning siren was sure to capture his heart and make a warrior of love out of...

Fmc: Given the fact that she is a surgeon, I expected her to be smarter than the way she acted. She started developing feelings for him, even though he treated her soooo bad! Girl, get a grip ffs! Also, what was up with her constant need to “save him from himself” as if it was her life’s mission? Ridiculous!!😅 There is no changing a man like that! ☝️🙂‍↔️ And the way she simply accepted that she time-traveled back in time, her being a surgeon with a good job and all…was also kinda unrealistic and ridiculous if you ask me!🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Mmc: I get that he is a Viking, that men were more aggressive and “harsher” back then, that women during that period of time weren’t respected or treated as well as they are today, but the way he talked to her, the way he treated her, especially in the beginning, was awful! Awful, I tell you!
He seriously threatened to kill her (and he really meant it) at one point, even though she literally saved his life minutes prior to him threatening to kill her. He pushed her around a few times and so on. Soo yeah…let’s just say this guy wasn’t my favorite book boyfriend!😅😂

Also, the time-travel aspect of the book wasn’t thoroughly thought-out…it wasn’t clear what exactly happened when she was transported to the past, why everything occurred etc.

Maybe it's because this book is fifteen years old, but this was ridiculous. I sort of tolerated the behavior of the characters because they're, well, Vikings. But when the main character had a chance to go to back to modern times, she didn't take it, which seems silly to me. I think that any woman would have gone back to their own life, rather than be held captive by some dickhead Viking. Seriously, I'm just not a fan of the "I have to fix him" plot, because frankly, that doesn't work at all in reality.

Baca ulang 7 July 2016, tetep cinta Selik & Rain <3

3.5 stars This was a fun romp through medieval England with a hot scarred Viking named Selik. Rain Jordan had been haunted by dreams of a Viking in battle all her life, and it really troubled her because she claimed to be a pacifist. When Rain and her mother go to a Viking exhibit in York, in present time, she sees a painting that is a scene from her dream. She gets hit on the head with some falling plaster and BOOM! she's on the battlefield that was in the painting and her dream.

Selik was a wonderful troubled hero who was set on a course of vengeance. Naturally, he fights his feelings for Rain. Rain irritated me a bit. She claimed to be a pacifist, yet she went around hitting Selik when he made her mad, and she had TONS of violent thoughts. Not very pacifist behavior if you ask me. Also, Rain is a ER doctor in modern times, yet when she gets to Medieval times she becomes overly emotional, crying often, and tends to act a bit on the silly side.

Overall, it was a fun read and I'll read more of this series :)

Wow. Thanks, Liz for this special, surprise gift. I had no idea how much PORNO is in some romance novels. Or that I could roll my eyes quite that much while reading and still finish the book.

What could pull at your heartstrings more than a deliciously tormented Viking hell-bent on avenging the horrendous murder of his wife and son? How about said Viking surrounded by a dozen filthy orphans, and one arthritic manservant? Sandra Hill's Outlaw Viking ripped at my heart then made me laugh until I cried. The interaction between Selik-the brooding Viking, and Rain-the time-traveling doctor from the future was bold and entertaining. (Though I find myself wondering where oh where I can find a Viking of my own to teach me about the S-spot.)

DNF at 35% I just can't read this any more.

Vikings, time travel, a modern woman being transported to a time where women were not considered equals, should have led to some hilarious and tension filled events/interactions but that didn’t happen. The hero well he wasn't much of one, and the heroine should have been praying to get away from him and back home.

Argh this was bloody disappointing - I have a feeling that finishing this book would have led to a little bit of a rant.

Review of Outlaw Viking (Viking I#02) by Sandra Hill

This book was an improvement over its predecessor in that at least it focuses more on plot. Unlike the preceding book, this one doesn’t dilly dally in the plot to stop and give us boring details about how Vikings lived, etcetera. Those kind of things should be woven into a story WITHOUT interrupting it. Thankfully, the author didn’t waste words in that area.

This book did improve in another section, compared to its prequel. It finally explained how the time travel was possible: God. Unfortunately, the author relied too heavily on God as an actual character in the story. He acted as a moral crutch for the characters. This caused me to not have as much sympathy for their plight. They say in writing books to (and I’m heavily paraphrasing now) “torture your main characters until they have surely reached rock bottom. When the characters dig their way back up, the journey would have the reader weeping with joy.” Well, is it rock bottom if the characters can hear God’s voice throughout the whole novel saying, “Have faith, Your welcome. You still doubt me, etc.” That sort of defies the purpose of throwing obstacles their way if you hold their hand, doesn’t it?

Furthermore, there were other areas in the book that, let’s just say, dampened the experience. When Rain had the chance to go home (to the future), she didn’t take it. At that point in the story, we had no cause to root for Seliek. Frankly, he wasn’t respectful to her, downright rude to her, in fact , and I couldn’t understand how she thought she loved him. What modern, self-respecting woman would stay and tolerate such treatment when she could leave?

The last thing that irked me was the head hopping. Seriously, the author should commit to one POV per scene and stick with it. Head hopping confuses the reader more than it clarifies the situation. I had to go back and reread the section to make sure I knew whose head I just landed in.

In conclusion, Sandra Hill’s writing has potential, but I’m going to stay away from her works written before and around the year 2000. Her writing is too shaky and betrays her to be a still a novice. I don’t know at what year her works improved significantly to a point where I can confidently recommend them to another reader, but I don’t have it in me, for the moment , to test her later works. Frankly, I’ve had enough for now.

Skipped the first one because I don’t care for romances where the heroine does the chasing. I was so excited to read this, what with my favorite ingredients: time travel, vikings, tortured (scarred even) uber-alpha hero, strong capable heroine. Old skool works for me too. And there’s a whole long series to look forward to! Alas, my love affair dwindled as I read. The heroine ended up getting on my nerves, too shrill and acted stupid, especially for a doctor. The “banter” became irritating, and the whole conflict became repetitive after a while (even as Selik’s reason for being who he became was slowly revealed). I started out okay with God having sent Rain back to save Selik (love as redemption is a favorite theme for me), and God speaking to both Rain and eventually Selik (who struggled to figure out who was talking). But then the author chose to add abortion to a list of modern-day child abuses and cruelty, which turned the spirituality into politics (her choice, obviously, as is mine not to buy any more of her books). I might have still persevered, but the author’s writing style rubbed me wrong too, so I gave up about half way in. The historical detail was surprisingly interesting and the love scenes (pre-love scenes at the point I stopped) are hot. YMMV.

I liked this one better than the first book of the series. The couple were constantly quarreling with each other in an amusing way. There were a number of 'if looks could kill' moments and a sassy-mouthed child that said the most inappropriate things. Things got a little dark near the end of the book but that took us to the HEA.

DNF 20% maybe if I read this book BEFORE the Outlander series it would have been “okay,” but since I read Outlander first (and LOVED it) I truly can’t handle this trash. The insta-love Rain felt for Selik and the need to “save him” was pathetic and dumb. Her being out of her time period and being comfortable and unafraid was unbelievable. 👎🏽👎🏽. The whole story came off VERY SILLY.

Aku mencintaimu

Tetapi saking seringnya, it's too annoying.

Cuma sayangnya karakter mereka bukan tipe yg saya kagumi.

This was gooood. I loved Selik in "Reluctant Viking" and was waiting for his story, impatiently. Not to mention I loveloveloveloveloveeeee Ruby Jordan and Thork (kyahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhXD) so I was super happy-excited to read a story on Ruby's daughter!!:D So pissed that Thork had to die at the end of "Reluctant Viking" though but I loved her husband Jack too.. And they're supposed to be the same kind of.. but I saw them as two different beings. You can be the reincarnation of someone but you're you. Different from who you were reincarnated to be... But whatever, I love Thork, Ruby, Jack so I'm satisfied! Anyways! If you haven't started Sandra Hill's Viking series, start now!!! They are awesome reads with love, hilarity, and wit bound together. SO GOOD. Read em!;)

Nothing like having a building fall on your head to send you a thousand years to the past in the middle of a battle field. Crap sorta spoiled that bit. Well it does happen in the first chapter so You'll just have to forgive me.

Okay so mommy (Ruby from the first book) didn't lie and wasn't crazy. She actually did time travel and boy the stories Rain hears of her mom mischief. But enough of that Rain must figure out how to save Selik and find out what happened to change his so drastically from the handsome playboy flirt he used to be.

The outlaw Viking

I agree with having a outward laugh when reading a novel. I found myself snickering through these chapter's that were endearing. Packed with romantic overture and funny moments. Yes, there were the usual drama which carried the reader thru to the complete storyline. But, it fixated you to the pages and didn't release the reader until completion. Worthy read for Sandra Hill and suggested this novel to any one who enjoys humorous spunky woman characters.

I love these Vikings. These books make me laugh!

I loved the modern day woman- strong and feisty – thrust back in time to the arrogant Viking. At times I laughed so loud I had to explain myself to those around me.

These are the books I reach for when I want a light, fun, read with irresistible, hilarious alpha males.

⭐️3.8⭐️

It took 3 days to finish this novel. I couldn’t resist the boredom that often appeared when reading it. This story developed very slowly, I understood it was a necessary to bring out the character development, but the story felt very saturated and stuck in the moment. Towards the end, the story moved forward and was quite interesting to read.

The story was set in a dark age / medieval era and the author described it as realistically as possible. I felt afraid and sometimes nauseous to read the lives of the Vikings. I have to praise the author for this. And thanks to Allah for being born in the modern era.

Selik and Rain, these two had a tough character so they often had heated arguments. Sometimes it was fun and sometimes annoying to read. 😅oh yeah, they were highly obscene and blunt when talking. It was something quite new for me to read. I could only say that they were compatible.

Anyway, there were some humorous scenes here but not all of them provoked laughter. Except when in the "doobie doobie doo" scene, I laughed contentedly. 🤣🤣

🇮🇩:

Rant alert!

It could have been an enjoyable read if the incredibly stupid h who by the way was a surgeon, wasn't trying to promote world peace at every turn in bl..dy 10th century!

There was also too much spirituality for my taste: God sending h to "save Selik" from himself and talking to her and later to him!

The "I have to fix him" plot is really not a favourite of mine. It's amazing that some women still believe they can change a man with preaching, moralising and love.

But worst of all was the way abortion was mentioned in this book in the same sentence with child abuse and starvation as modern world's cruelties!!! Not my cup of tea. I skimmed through from 25% and still could not finish it.

***mild spoiler ahead***

The h has the opportunity to go back in her time but she doesn't take it, preferring to remain a captive and taking the hero's tongue lashing.

Also the the heroine's instalust and the way she marvelled (verbally) over the hero's body after knowing him for only one day was just cringworthy. The inconsistency in the heroine's character irked me to no end, changing from a watering pot Mother Teresa to a virgin adolescent panting for sex from one moment to the next. Just no.

E as cenas hot?

Adorei!

This was enjoyable, for an old school romance written 30 years ago.

Selik is a Viking, Rain is a modern doctor, who finds herself in the past to “save Selik.” She’s such a badass doctor, she somehow gets everyone do do her bidding and listen to her medical guidelines without being killed for being a witch. Like, several times characters call her a witch and then just shrug it off and take her smallpox vaccination. Bonkers. But also so much fun.

Selik is wallowing in guilt and anger and is caught up in his quest for revenge. He experiences such growth and changes for the better, basically to be worthy of Rain. He’s somehow the most feminist Viking ever, even if he doesn’t think through his actions very well.

I probably would have rated this higher, since it was enjoyable, but it is a product of its time. The old school romance has old school ideas and every time the heroine called another woman a slut I shuddered. It didn’t happen often, but enough that it was jarring to read in 2024.

Also: that cover. Chef’s kiss. I wish we could have more old school romance covers for mordern romances. Down with cartoon covers, bring this back.

I couldn't get into the first book, I tried it a few times. So never thought it read any of the others. I decided to give this a try and just skip book #1. I figured things out enough that it wasn't an issue. There are some things that made me 🤨, but for the most part I enjoyed the book. It's not perfect, but 🤷🏻‍♀️ This is one of those books where the time travel is a bit more loose - mostly no worries about changing history or introducing modern things into the past, etc. Rain's modern outlook on war did annoy me at times, because like, hello girl - you are in the past (Viking vs. Anglo-Saxon era), ppl did not have the luxury to lay their sword down and be a pacifist back then🙄. So do so means death, if not for you, than those under your care. It was little things like that that got to me, but again, for the most part it wasn't too bad.

I want to be angry that this book was so bad, but it wasn't soooo bad, it was just really not good at all.
Mostly it was Rain that drove me nuts, for a supposedly intelligent woman with a high IQ she just came off as ignorant and flakey. Watching her interact with the people of the past was painful. Her medical knowledge would have probably seen her burned as a witch. But I just couldn't take her at all seriously and I actively found myself wanting someone to slap her.
I at least found Selik sort of believable, but in any way attractive or charming.
Plus the writing just felt lazy and never really grabbed me. It was already a longer book, so it really took forever. It didn't even have any of the fun, over the top or cringey elements you'd hope to find an older bodice ripper.

Not that much different from the 1st book in the series. This time it is Dr. Rain Jordan who travels back in time. Rain is the daughter of Ruby (from the 1st book in the seies). Rain and Ruby are at a museum and Rain is hit in the head and travels back time.

I sort of want to continue this series just to see how everyone ends up time traveling.

As a romance I guess this book is ok. It has a happy ever after. I just don't think it has aged very well and the choices Dr. Rain makes are tough to take. Plus there is quite a bit about God that didn't sit well with me. Dr. Rain believes God has sent her to the past to save the Viking.

Although I enjoyed the feisty heroine, I didn't realize this book was released in 2004 (my copy was a 2014 re-release) and found some of the content too "old school" romance for me in the way women were physically treated and depicted in the book, especially his first wife and son and later the heroine (however historically accurate it may be). I did not read the first book in the series, but thought the time travel was cleverly done using the site where the museum stood although her choosing to stay and "save" him was a little much for me.
