Georg Elser é, provavelmente, um dos nomes mais desconhecidos da Resistência alemã e dos que se opuseram à subida ao poder de Hitler. Este alemão, reservado e extremamente meticuloso no seu ofício de carpinteiro, decidiu um dia preparar um atentado contra Hitler. Local: o coração da alma nazi e do III Reich, a cidade de Munique e a emblemática cervejaria Bürgerbräu. O dia: 8 de novembro de 1939, não muito tempo após o início da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Oriundo dos Alpes Suábios, foi apanhado a tentar passar a fronteira para a Suíça após o atentado. Nunca se pensaria que alguém como Elser seria capaz de preparar tudo em segredo e, acima de tudo, sozinho e sem o apoio de nenhuma grande estrutura. Mas assim foi. Elser entrou para a história como o símbolo do inconformismo individual e da vontade de mudar o mundo. Foi um dos "prisioneiros ilustres" do Nazismo e viria a morrer em Dachau, 21 dias antes da libertação deste campo de concentração.
Este livro mostra o que foi toda a preparação do atentado, as motivações de Georg Elser e os meses que se seguiram ao atentado. Um livro que mostra um outro lado deste conflito mundial e que permite ver que nem todos remavam lado a lado com Hitler. Um livro que recomendo a todos e que vale muito a pena ler.

Georg Elser foi um homem que se opôs ao sistema de terror nazi ainda que nem sequer fosse um político e que a 8 de Novembro de 1939 tentou matar Hitler, tendo este escapado por mero acaso, com vida. O que teria sido do mundo se este herói, tão pouco conhecido e valorizado tivesse sido eficaz nas suas intenções? Seria sem dúvida um mundo melhor, quero crer que sim.
Este é um livro sobretudo sobre coragem, um relato bem documentado e escrito sobre um episódio que poderia ter alterado o curso da História Mundial

A good historical book.
I didn’t know that Georg existed and I was surprised that a man tried to kill Hitler that soon in history. I enjoyed the reading overall.

La storia di Georg Elser, ricostruita attraverso i documenti degli interrogatori e dalle testimonianze di familiari, conoscenze e guardie carcerarie. Georg Elser, misconosciuta e bistrattata figura della resistenza antinazista è stato colui che è andato più vicino di tutti all'uccidere Hitler. L'8 novembre 1939, infatti, il cattivo tempo costringe Hitler ad abbandonare in anticipo l'annuale raduno alla Bürgerbräukeller di Monaco di Baviera: se fosse rimasto più a lungo come da programma, se fosse rimasto solo 12 minuti in più, sarebbe morto, seppellito dalle macerie della birreria, distrutta da una bomba piazzata da Georg Elser dopo un certosino lavoro di progettazione e di collocazione del materiale esplosivo. Morirono infatti tutte le persone che si trovavano là dove fino a 12 minuti prima si trovava Hitler.
Georg Elser era un falegname, orologiaio, operaio e fu capace di organizzare un attentato di quella portata in uno dei luoghi simboli del nazismo agendo completamente da solo, senza proferire parola a nessuno dei suoi cari o amici. Questa sua solitudine nell'agire non fu creduta dalla Gestapo e non fu creduta dopo la guerra dagli ambienti antinazisti che lo accusavano di essere stato strumento di un finto attentato organizzato dalla Gestapo. Insomma, un incredibile personaggio che solo negli anni '80, con libri come questo e con alcuni film, tra cui uno di e con Klaus Maria Brandauer, ha avuto il riconoscimento che meritava, quello di un resistente antinazista.
Solo la nebbia lo tradì e gli impedì di raggiungere il suo obiettivo.
Elser fu arrestato casualmente poche ore prima dell'attentato, mentre cercava di scappare in Svizzera dopo aver finito l'operazione di collocazione dell'esplosivo e dell'orologio di controllo. Dopo la notizia dell'attentato, la polizia di frontiera si insospettì e lo mando alla Gestapo. Fu tenuto prigioniero prima a Sachsenhausen e poi a Dachau fino al 9 aprile 1945 quando fu giustiziato, per ordine probabilmente dello stesso Hitler. Era stato tenuto in vita per potergli fare un processo-spettacolo alla fine della guerra. Elser mi sembra una grandissima figura tragica che mi ha affascinato fin dal momento, un paio di anni fa, nel quale ho saputo di lui e del suo gesto.

I wonder if there was an error in the formatting of this on Audible... the book ended halfway through, then picked up again with Elser's early life (and Hitler's).
I knew the story from The Plots Against Hitler, and also at least one podcast, and this was just more data to depress me in the knowledge that people kept trying to assassinate Hitler, and he kept escaping, and then bragged about how Providence was clearly on his side.
If the format was not banjaxed here, it was weird and not great. And I wasn't enthralled with the author's discussion of Elser's thoughts and ponderings and remembrances as he sat in a Gestapo cell - because I doubt those thoughts (etc) came up in interrogation (though some seriously strange and off-topic subjects did, apparently), and if Elser wrote a prison memoir it would likely have been burned by his captors. And I'm surprised at the lack of detail in the discussion of the explosion itself. It took a long time for it to come out that people (not Hitler!) died in the blast (though, again, formatting problem?), and they were never named. No detail is given for what happened. Which was surprising considering the depth of detail gone into about the plan and its execution - all of which I imagine came from interrogation records.
All in all, I'm slightly sorry I listened to this.

Um relato, muito bem documentado, de um episódio marcante, por muitos ainda desconhecido, que poderia ter alterado o rumo da História.
Do meu ponto de vista, Georg Elser era um homem "naive", mais preocupado com a degradação das suas condições de vida desde a chegada ao poder dos nacional socialistas, do que com o que o seu acto poderia representar para o resto do Mundo e para a História mundial!
No entanto, a ser verdade tudo o que está descrito, é de louvar a sua coragem e a sua perspicácia. Numa altura em que o nacional socialismo vivia ainda o seu estado de graça, antes da guerra, Elser estava um passo à frente e sentiu desde logo que aquele regime não era bom para ele, nem para os seus compatriotas.
O que aconteceria se Hitler tivesse perecido naquele atentado? Ainda teria sido possível evitar a II Guerra Mundial e o extermínio de milhões de pessoas? Apesar de não achar que fosse esse o seu principal objectivo, creio que Elser estaria convencido que sim... Pessoalmente acho que, mesmo sem Hitler, já não teria sido possível evitar o que aconteceu.

A short book with a story full of suspense. This book is a great influencer as it drifted away my inclination from Hitler. It precisely mentions the pre war negative effects of Nazism on Germany. The book can be said a sister to the diary of Anne Frank..As both reveal the dark side of Nazi side. This book is more accurate because the atrocities of Nazis on Jews is a well known fact but the hardships faced by a non Jew German isn't known. This book describes the hardships faced by a non Jew German.

There were several attempts to kill Adolf Hitler while he was in power. George Elser's attempt was one of the earliest. He approached the task with determination and nearly succeeded. This book is a story of his effort. I had read small articles about the assassination attempt over the years but no presented the story of the would-be assassin. I was aware that he died in a concentration camp but not aware that he was kept alive until nearly the end of the war. This is a good short book that helps flesh out that time period prior to the outbreak of WWII.

It is very interesting to read about lone individuals who saw the state of the nation and acted. This book is written like a text book and is very straight forward.

Ich schuf mir dieses Werk an mit dem Ziel, endlich einmal mehr zu erfahren über den Mann, der sonst in relativierender Art einfach der Schreiner und Kommunist ist. Mehr wurde mir in der schulischen Ausbildung nämlich nicht offenbart über Elser. Auch sonst hängt die Erinnerungskultur in Deutschlabd überwiegend an den "Männern des 20. Juli". Andere Widerstandskämpfer finden so fatalerweise kaum Beachtung. So ging ich mit dem Elan ans Lesen mein Wissen zu erweitern und...war nach den ersten Seiten völlig irritiert. Da ich zuvor Ortners Biographie über Roland Freisler gelesen hatte, erwartete ich hier einen ähnlichen Stil, fand mich jedoch eher in einer Art Geschichtsroman wieder. Zugegebenermaßen enttäuschte mich dies etwas, doch dieses Gefühl wandelte sich zusehends. Die Mischung aus erzählendem Stil und Quellenzitaten führt zu einer lebhaften Biographie, die einem eröffnet worin die Faszination Elsers besteht. In ihm verbinden sich die (scheinbare) Banalität seiner Zielsetzung (einfach den Krieg verhindern) und die Komplexität seines Charakters. Dies wird dem Leser in zugänglicher Art dargelegt, die ihn eine in gewissen Zügen emotionale Verbindung mit Elser aufbauen lässt.
Fazit: Eine lebhafte Biographie, die Schnittmenge zwischen Geschichtsroman und Quellenarbeit bietet und aufräumt mit den sich hartnäckig haltenden Fehlbehauptungen über Georg Elser.

A short book but an excellent read. It details the life of one man that saw a wrong and tried to change it. The epilogue is especially interesting since it talks about Elser's role and image in post German view of the Nazi period. How Elser with truly a Everyman quality saw what the coming and decided to try to stand up and save his country, shaming many who lived during that time and convinced themselves that they could not do anything.

Interesting story of n event I did not know
The courage of this man and his foresight of how catastrophic Hitler would be for Germany provokes me to great respect. Individual courageous effort at this time is amazing. Although his efforts did not work, just having that courage is amazing to me.

I had never seen or read anything about this man. The book is a good portrayal of him and his life - definitely a loner.
