I love my devotions every morning, and it's nice to know I have one that's aimed specifically toward recovery. I wish I could find others just like it, I could definitely go for another one as well!
Wisdom is a valuable asset, especially the kind that comes before life might demand its use. Just For Today presents a year's supply of such pieces of wisdom into one volume with a message for each day of the year.
While many may be familiar with devotional volumes including a religious slant, not as many might be aware that secular versions of such devotionals exist. And in this volume, Narcotic's Anonymous have presented their answer to the daily devotional. The difference here is that the wisdom it contains originates from a worldwide community of recovering addicts. This incredible diversity gives Just For Today a communal feeling.
While readers may find some meditations disagreeable, the vast majority will be applicable to a host of real-world situations. Narcotics Anonymous has not set out to provide solutions to problems, but rather to provide a dose of reality given in a loving and serenity inducing tone.
This broad swath of practicality and the communal feeling created by the volume make Just For Today a valuable piece of literature for recovering addicts from any persuasion.
This devotional is something you keep in your own personal library to read daily. You do your research on specific topics while working on the 12 steps and you wish for new editions for a devotional that saves your life.
This book is ongoing for me. It is almost a daily read. I have only started this at the beginning of 2018 until current. I enjoy the passages and the little pieces that you find in the Narcotics Anonymous Blue Book. For anyone in the recovery this book is a must.
This book will always be in my life . The heart of every addict is the program without the program,a sponsor , and the books to let us know where not they only ones and r story has just begun the spiritual principles play a big part in recovery, and this book is just one of r guidelines. Luv it
NOTICE: I am NOT writing this review to suck up to my grandma. She bought the book, she is a representative and HR member of this organization. HOWEVER, I took the time to read this book after she shared her story of addiction with me.
ANYWAYS, let's get to business.
I thought Just For Today...
Was a surprisingly interesting book. Under each and every page, was a quote starting with "Just For Today..." my favorites being the ones on pages 202 and 203, speaking about things that truly hit home. For me, this book was like going on one of those self-care trips that privileged people with money and resources can do when they don't wanna work but can't retire. (No offense to y'all that do, just sayin'...)
Anyway, let's touch a bit more on the MAIN IDEA of the book. Narcotics Anonymous' "Just For Today" is a great book ready to envelop anyone who needs to recover from their narcotics addiction. Ranging from meditations, inspirational quotes, coping mechanisms, planning methods, and their renowned self-reflection periods, this book is a showstopper for anyone looking to truly REFLECT. The basic premise of the book is simple. It says that when we meditate we can begin to recover from our addictions. However, to achieve this, we must first begin to address the root of our problems. For example, when we are having a bad day, we may reach for our bottle of beer, and then may reach for another. We may be sick, so we reach for the prescription meds. Our "Just For Today" is the beer, the pills, or the cigarette. The problem is that this is what we have been reaching for a long time, and yet we still decide that, we can put it off for another day. However, on page 108 the quote "I will imagine what my life would be like without my character defects..." allows the reader to get a perspective on what NA (Narcotics Anonymous)'s mission was, to help steer you from that addiction. The book is divided into many sections. Each section focuses on a different aspect of recovery. There is a short section for each, which each include personal stories, AND, reflections from NA members themselves. The first section talks about vigilance. It includes quotes about how the power of routinely checking up on yourself was expressed in each person's life and how it influenced them to be a better, and more consistent. person. (pg1~about pg30/32) Another section is about the power of Self Acceptance. It includes an idea of what acceptance is, how the acceptance of personal accountability can be utilized, and what this can do for our minds.
This book was like, here's a coping mechanism, here's another, and another, with a side of a coping, and a dash of mechanism. Rapid-fire with so many different ways that they are here for you, but also, how you can be here for YOURSELF. You can tell that the entire point of this book was to give you time to reflect on yourself. There were a lot of NA mentioning themselves, but that was to just give you that sense of family and belonging that they had with one another. They wanted YOU to feel a connection to YOU! This is why there were so many ways for you to try something Just For Today.
Anyway, if you're me, and you psychoanalyze things when you're bored, pick this book up. If you need a self-care day,( or days, or weeks, or maybe a month (or two, I mean the book isn't long at all but...) pick this book up. It'll be a good read!

Short daily reflective readings looking at the nature of addiction and the program of recovery. Each day features a short line from the Basic Text, a practical analysis/scenario that one can easily apply to their program whether newly sober or sober for years, and a short takeaway action. It was an enjoyable read and something I looked forward to daily.
Na Lit is my favorite 12-step literature. This is not perfect by any means and is best for folks newer in recovery with the new book Spiritual Principle a Day (that just came out) a great adjunct. I love it and have read through it several times. Definitely a core of my daily recovery practice.
I love this little book. It helps me to put the proper perspective on my addiction and on life. The words , as I read them, seem to come straight from God and/or my "Higher Power!" It's amazing the impact this little book has had on my life and I'm returning to it again because I need to revisit and start journaling about my thoughts on each day, as if to take a daily assessment you may say. It does a brain good! Not to mention the body and soul too!
I cannot recall when I came across this as an app but it is always on my phone. I use it even though this is not my fellowship because the 12 steps are the 12 steps. It is a free app and it allows you to email yourself the daily text. It has been a very valuable daily reader.
