Dave Whelan's autobiography, like the man himself, is unique. I don't know of any other sporting biog that can possibly relate one man's life journey quite like this one. From northern back street urchin, DW attained his life's ambition to play in a Wembley Cup Final in 1960. Unfortunately, he ended up with a broken leg, and a loser's medal. The leg break more or less finished his top flight career as it did for most who suffered such an injury back then. In fact, the leg break could have ended Whelan's life. Instead, Dave picked himself up and built a business, from market stall to retail empire. As a multi-millionaire he then rescued his home town's football and rugby clubs. He is the only man ever to play in all four divisions of English football and then to be chairman of a football club through those same four divisions. At the time of reading this, Wigan Athletic have a massive opportunity to reach the 2013 F.A. Cup Final, and even if they face the 'reds' of Manchester, I hope that Whelan is on the winning side this time round.
