I’m so glad I came across this book, and so glad Morag Higgins wrote it. It is a beautiful book about a magnificent horse, and the lessons she left behind. A thoroughly enjoyable read, and I barely put it down from the moment I picked it up to the moment I finished it, with tears in my eyes.

This was not the kind of book I would normally pick up. I read it for the book club attend, called the Travelling Tangerine Book Club. I am a pretty quick reader, but I had finished this in less than a day. It was a heartfelt and beautifully written life story of a horse whose personality couldn't help but shine through the pages from when she entered Morag's life to when she left.

Reading this book made me wish I could have met Bruja, or even just watch her jump. It was a lovely story and I'm glad I got the opportunity to live it through Morag's eyes.

Read again and cried! This book keeps the memory of Bruja alive and in my heart.

This is the life story of a very remarkable horse. All of my life I had dreamed of owning a horse, but, living in a housing scheme on the outskirts of Glasgow my dream looked as if it would never come true.

After nearly 10 years of continuous wishing and begging I had a chance to make my dream come true. My parents bought me a horse. For all of the children (and adults) who have had the same longing but who have not been as lucky as me, this story has been written. It proves that if you dream and wish hard enough, then sometimes the wish will come true.

Through trial and error Bruja and I learned together, our adventures and escapades would turn the hair of any experienced horse owner white! We grew up together as friends and companions, our territory being (believe it or not) the same streets in the same housing scheme that I had played, cried and dreamed in as a child.

As we both matured we became serious in our work and together we entered the competitive field of showjumping. I entered the horse profession as an Instructor and was employed in the biggest yard (at that time) in Scotland. Our adventures did not end and I achieved my dream. I qualified for The Horse of the Year Show at Wembley.

Misfortune struck and again I was facing the chance of losing my friend. With determination and effort we survived and spent the rest of our lives together, competing and playing.

What made Bruja most remarkable was the fact that she not only achieved a very high standard in showjumping, but also in cross-country, dressage, showing and western riding. She really was the all round performer. Her life was one big adventure after another, with no time spent being bored. I learned all I know from Bruja and she was my best friend.

I have tried to show in her story, that, if given the chance, any horse can have as good and varied a life as Bruja. Often it is the owners who just don’t listen to their horses. It was often remarked to me how good and well behaved Bruja was. People couldn’t believe how versatile and willing to learn she was. I have written in this book all I know about encouraging a horse to be its best and to be brave in all it does. I have dispelled the myth that you can’t retrain a horse after a certain age. Bruja learned Western Riding at the grand age of 19, and she competed at the Scottish Championships Show a few years later, winning a staggering number of rosettes.

Even though I have not competed professionally in Showjumping for at least 15 years, if I visit a show, the old school of competitors still ask me “Do you still have that wee Dark Mare?”.

Bruja touched many lives, but few people knew the whole story. This is it. Right up to her very last moments in this world, I was there with her at all times. She was my best friend, my soulmate, my baby girl.

This is her life. Enjoy.
