About the author

Shuzo Oshimi (押見修造, Oshimi Shūzō) is a Japanese manga creator.
Drawn in a realistic art style, his comics tend to be psychological dramas exploring the difficulties in human relationships and often touching on disturbing situations and perversions.
Oshimi debuted in 2001 with the manga series Avant-Garde Yumeko, appeared in Kodansha's 'Monthly Shōnen Magazine.' Most of his works since then have been published by Kodansha and Futabasha.
Among his first successes the single volume manga Sweet Poolside (2004), later adapted into a live-action film, and the series Drifting Net Café (2008–2011), also adapted for TV.
Oshimi reached international acclaims with The Flowers of Evil (2009–2014) and Inside Mari (2012–2016), both adapted into successful anime. Other notable works are Blood on the Tracks (2017–2023) and Welcome Back, Alice (2020-2023) .

I feel like the manga maker went to a Yayoi Kusama art show featuring her penis-themed sculptures and decided to come up with his own version of her secret origin.

Yumeko Mochizuki is a 15-year-old girl who has become obsessed with seeing a penis in real life. She's not horny, mind you, she just really, really wants to see one. She learns about figure drawing with nude models and thinks a school art club might be her one big chance.

This is wildly inappropriate, and I often get prudish about manga with underage nudity, but I found myself drawn in by her drive and the comically ridiculous lengths to which is is willing to go to achieve her goal.

Weird but compelling.

Another of Oshimi's early works, not quite as whimsical as "Sweet Poolside," but still imbued with a touch of silliness. 😅

In this piece, Oshimi is still in the process of exploring and honing the formula that would later enable him to craft several fantastic series. While you can sense the inklings of this formula, it remains largely incomplete.

Meet Yumeko, an ordinary schoolgirl consumed by an intense desire to see the male anatomy up close. Not in a sexual way, though Oshimi's works often carry a sexual undertone. Rather, Yumeko's curiosity is profound and sincere.

This serves as the foundation for a narrative that is, at its core, somewhat whimsical yet undeniably fun.

This being Oshimi, it's weird to find that this is not another slow-building anxiety nightmare, and instead mostly a coming-of-age comedy(?) about a girl who has an all-consuming obsession with dicks. Mostly weird but could have been worse.

I am very charmed by Oshimi's early art style being so crude and rushed. It's clear he likes art and is striving for more but couldn't quite get there back in 2003. Even narratively, you can kind of see the skeleton of something like The Flowers of Evil being built in the background of this early work.

One of the wackest manga I've ever read, and that's saying something.

The main girl loves dicks. Not like wanting to actually use them but the shape and look of them, she can't stop thinking about them. She wants to draw them all the time. Seems pretty normal.

BUT THEN one day she wants more than just to imagine them. She wants to see a real one. So she meets a boy in art class and crazy shit happens, painting over cocks, and a ending that's so wild I can only use the words of the main lead.

"I wanted a dick. I found a dick. I Am ONE with a dick."

Aren't we all?

I really liked this! I think it portrays a coming-of-age story and sexual awkwardness really well. The protag has never seen a penis before and is really curious about it to the point of obsession, and I think it's tempting to write this off as "silly", but what the story is really examining is how teenagers can be curious about sex/nudity/intimacy without really understanding it or how it will eventually fit into their lives.

Nothing serious, nothing heavy, nothing fascinating—just a surreal avant-garde girl who’s obsessed with cocks. It’s weird in an Oshimi kind of way but nothing spooky compared to his other titles. I think it’s one of his early works as the art style isn’t that close to such beauty I found in his best oeuvre. Nevertheless, kind of intriguing.

Bella la copertina... Ma il contenuto mi sfugge.

Parabole dell'espressione artistica fin che vuoi, ma lei appare ottusa fin dal principio. Ci sono delle pagine divertenti ma è tutto l'insieme che non fa per me. Le metafore di questo genere son troppo complicate per gente come la sottoscritta.

Forse potrei leggere il primo numero di I fior del male ma ho il sospetto che non faccia per me neanche quello.

Bella la tavola con Himeko nei panni di Dalí.

And I knew it wasn’t going to go there, but I was kind of hoping Yumeko’s conclusion to all this was going to be “I’m a trans guy with body dysphoria!”, but, well, obviously not. 😅

Yumeko un giorno ha iniziato ad avere la fissazione di voler vedere un pene. Inizia ad immaginarlo ovunque, ma non perché vuole farci sesso, ma più per una curiosità. Trova una occasione nel club di arte e chiedendo al suo unico membro, Honda, di posare nudo.

Honda accetta e Yumeko continua a minacciarlo. Se Honda non posa nudo per lei, Yumeko abbandona il club di arte.

Yumeko porta Honda dentro casa sua, per evitare che a scuola qualcuno vedi qualcosa, e lo fa posare nudo. Honda si fa prendere dall'istinto sessuale e tocca Yumeko, la ragazza si arrabbia e lo caccia di casa.
L'istinto diventa comprensibile visto che Yumeko ha stimolato il pene di Honda con qualche pennellata.

Honda minaccia di non posare più nudo se Yumeko non si spoglia per lui per un disegno. Yumeko accetta e posa nuda per uno sketch.

Honda ha superato ogni limite di sopportazione e ha voglia del corpo di Yumeko.
La ragazza finalmente si rende conto che vuole fare sesso e i due scopano a scuola.
Yumeko infine si accorge che vuole intraprendere una vera carriera da artista e andare nella scuola d'arte.

Oshimi porta una bizzarra storia in un club di arte di un primo rapporto sessuale tra due giovani, senza inserire sentimenti di mezzo. Honda è un semplice ragazzino che vuole perdere la verginità e ritrovandosi così tante volte nudo davanti a una bella ragazza come Yumeko e persino stimolato dal suo tocco con il pennello, diventa facile capire la sua fatica nel contenersi.
Yumeko dalla "innocente curiosità" sviluppa una ossessione che la porta un po' fuori dalla realtà. Non si rende mai conto che della difficoltà di Honda nel sopportare tutta questa stimolazione senza poi andare al sodo. Il lieto finale con la scopata l'ho trovata gratificante per il povero Honda.
Yumeko infine oltre per la passione per il pene, ha tracciato una futura carriera lavorativa.

A girl with an oversized obsession who has the opportunity to discover what a dick is to her through art. Sounds childish yet at the same time how many people have actually gone through a similar obsession in their youth. What I like about this is it truly describes the artistic genius, the development of one, through their obsessive and selfish views, seeking a means to funnel their desire into understanding and making the knowledge theirs in an intimate way. Oshimi has a way, despite the low grade of his art, to make you think about things if you give him a chance.

This was kind of just harmless, compared to Oshimi’s other works, of course this is an early work but yeah. We’re thrown to Yumeko wanting to see dicks, she gets her wish and she’s inspired, then when she gets touched she pulled out a box cutter? That came out of nowhere. Then when she posed nude she immediately cried, the boy cared for his feelings but the entire time she didn’t, then they just have sex…okay??? Weird, but that’s Oshimi, strangest coming of age story I’ve probably read.

Nada mal. Esta historia corta sobre como una adolescente en plena pubertad, descubre la sexualidad(al menos esa fue mi interpretación)
Si algo caracteriza a Shuzo Oshimi son sus historias en dónde sus protagonistas son sometidos a una exploración psicológica.
En las flores del mal, por ejemplo, se habla de temas como la obsesión, el rechazo y la soledad.
Ahora bien, siento que el manga llega a un desenlace poco elaborado. Teniendo en cuenta que no se trata de un manga de comedia. Aún así, es disfrutable para leerse una tarde libre.

Uh, well, not sure why I was surprised lol I wanted to read this early work of Shuzo but this didn’t do it for me. I mean, yes, I know it’s meant to be a gag coming of age story but it was a little too much for my taste. Still a big fan of his work and his interesting mind! If you want to read about a crazed teenage girl obsessed with male genitalia, this is for you lol

Great work, I enjoyed the book a lot and definitely got me excited to keep on ready to get to the climax literally. Could have been a little better with words but with all of the excitement it didn't bother me. Plus all the sexual tension coming from the girls side and the boy being some what innocent.

3 ⭐️ a very strange coming of age manga featuring a young female protagonist obsessed with a certain male body part. Drawn & written by Shuzo Oshimi, the art is wonderful. The actual story was interesting and unexpected but not mind blowing.

All I can say, this book is a kind of pervert manga. The story is kind of weird, the main character always thinking about dick and really wants to see a real one. There is no character nor story development in this manga.

I’m going to leave this unrated for now as I collect my thoughts. I did read this late at night. The overall concept drew me to this manga but I had some issues along the way , in terms of consent and the line between adolescent naïveté and flat out sexual assault.
