"This is one of the best stories I've had the pleasure of reading in a long time. I highly recommend it." —Vigilant Reader Book Reviews
A plane crashes in South America, leaving only two survivors.
Reclusive author Jonas Drake stumbles from the fiery wreckage of the crashed 747 and meets Jeremy, a young boy struggling to come to grips with the loss of his mother. Hunted by F.A.R.C. insurgents chasing them for ransom, the pair flee into the rainforest with no plan and almost no hope.
Desperate to distract Jeremy from the nightmares surrounding them, Jonas tells him stories from his early days of writing, drawing him away from one reality and into another. As they travel and the tales intensify, Jonas’s long-forgotten characters, old friends he has neglected for years, materialize in the jungle, aiding the unlikely duo in their quest for survival.
But will their help be enough?
Filled with wonder, this stunning adventure from USA Today bestselling author, Luke Romyn, journeys into the heart of a man turned cold by a world he barely recognizes.
A terrifying storm lashed Sydney’s North Shore on June 21st, 1975. Boats were swamped and jetties smashed in what some claim was the worst storm to hit the coast for four decades.
In the midst of the chaos, Luke Romyn’s parents battled to get to a hospital to birth their baby boy. Normally their idyllic island cottage was a near-paradise; on this night the journey to the mainland in their tiny boat seemed like a passage through Hell. Their son was born near midnight, but part of the storm never left him.
When Luke reached fifteen years of age his father was killed while working in Fiji, leaving Luke and his mother alone. At times, the only things to get Luke through his grief were the stories playing out in his head, endless fantastical tales of lands both distant and near, with characters who would protect him from any tragedy.
At eighteen, Luke began working in nightclubs as a bouncer. Unbeknownst to him, this was simply the first step on a trek which would dictate much of his life from that point on. For over two decades since, Luke has worked in the security industry; from bouncing in some of Australia's roughest pubs and nightclubs to protecting Mickey Mouse and the Disney crew from the overzealous jaws of tenacious toddlers. He's been bodyguard for celebrities internationally and chased feral pigs and snakes from jungle sets on Steven Spielberg productions. Luke has traveled the globe and spent time in some of the most amazing locations the world has to offer.
This experience fuels the Australian writer’s ever-expansive imagination, and he pours it into his novels, combining fact with fiction, history with fantasy, delivering engrossing action-thrillers which leave fans gasping for more. Luke’s quick wit has seen his social media following explode, and he is currently one of the most prolific social media celebrities in Australia, with several hundred thousand followers across the internet.
Publishing his first book, The Dark Path, in 2009 saw it voted in the top 10 horror novels of that year, even though Luke denies ever intending the novel to be classed as horror. Luke Romyn is now one of the most popular indie authors in the ever-growing eBook market and personally completes everything from cover art to final formatting, working tirelessly with editors so as to refine the best stories possible for his readers. The results are international bestsellers you’re certain to love diving into. Hundreds of thousands of readers can’t be wrong.
This certainly is walking with shadows and I couldn't stop reading. It held my attention throughout. The imagination of the writer is incredible and makes it so real. Excellent!
(No Spoilers) I loved this book! It has stayed with me since I put it down, and it was not easy putting it down! I felt like hugging the book as if saying goodbye to an old friend.
The book gripped me from the very first page. I walked hand in hand with Jonas throughout the entire book, excited and nervous I clutched his hand.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, thanks largely to the addition of the stories woven throughout. The stories told by the main character were simple and childish, yet they each held a simple lesson that was brought out throughout the book. Definitely the best part, in my opinion. The character of Jonas Drake was well-written, though I found the antagonist to be a bit too stereotypical. He's exactly what you'd expect from a villain in this type of novel. No surprises there. The supporting character of Jeremy had a few of the clichéd reactions expected of children (not necessarily the way children actually are, but close enough). The writing flowed well, and the book held my attention. Despite a few minor flaws (such as failing to describe the terrible humidity of the Amazon rainforest), the book was well-written and worth a read!
This was a great imaginative book. A writer, Jonas, is on a trip to South America when his plan crashes somewhere in the Amazon. He believes he is the only survivor - until he finds a young boy, Jeremy, who has also survived. Then he spots a group of men who - for a brief moment he believes are rescuers, but quickly realizes they are crooks - members of a criminal gang that live in South America. Jonas and Jeremy begin fleeing these guys who want to kill them To keep Jeremy calm, Jonas tells him stories - stories that he developed as a child when he was going through some very traumatic times in his family. Imaginative stories of fantastical characters who do amazing things. As they face dangers, from animals, lack of food and water, criminal gangs who want to use them for kidnap money from the US, a drug gang who is looking for their plane that crashed full of drugs - Jonas tells his stories from long ago to Jeremy. The 2 of them bond -having only each other and the magical fantasy characters to save them A very moving story
I started this book and got distracted. When I picked it up again I had to start again as I couldn't remember what the first chapter was about, it hadn't gripped me. I'm so glad I did start again as this story is one of the best I've read for a long time. How would I cope if my plane went down in the jungle and the only other survivor was a small boy? The additional stories in the book told by Jonas to amuse the young boy were skilfully woven into the plot. I didn't see the ending coming at all. A real masterpiece and I'm surprised it hasn't won a prize. I've read Man Booker stories inferior to this one.
This is a new author for me and one whose writing has surprised me. This book is well written and grabs you from the beginning. This story combines a person's will to survive, unexpected help, and the question of what is real or not. Jonas is an author who has closed himself off from the world. When his plane crashes in the Amazon, we follow his trip to survive. His journey is full of dangers and stories from his childhood' that he tells Jeremy, a child who also survives the crash. The ending is both unexpected and fitting. So sit back and enjoy Jonas' journey to survive and after
Wow! This book really captured my interest and imagination. I was reading a different book, in which one of the characters was reading this book so I had to read it as I thought it unusual to find such a thing. A book so different, I don’t really want to say too much for fear of giving spoilers. Fantastic premise and well worth a read for it is books within a book within a book! Cannot recommend this enough. I’m away now to find his next book.
The Captain has turned on the Fasten Seat Belt sign.
Adventure, fantasy, and soul searching all wrapped into one! Luke Romyn knows how to engage his readers and keep them interested. In depth scenes and characters engulf the reader creating places and people you can feel and see. I thoroughly enjoyed riding the rapids this book put before me!
This story is about survival after a plane crash. The main character is lost in the rain forest with a 10 yr old boy. His heroes from his childhood play an important role during his survival. Its definitely a different story from any other, but worth reading. Maybe it will bring back childhood memories for you.
There are so many worlds in this book. Jonas is traveling from a book convention when the airliner he is on crashes. His struggle to survive the jungle, guerillas, drug runners and his past all combine to force him into accepting reality and his traumatic past or lose his mind. If you survived childhood trauma this book resonates.
A guy and a ten yr old boy in the Amazon jungle, the only survivors of a plane crash. Which terrified you the most, the crash or being alone in the jungle with a ten year old?
An author finds himself enduring his own adventure equaling the thrillers he himself has written. He battles through with the help of his own characters from his first penned, dark fairytales with a companion who he relates to more than he realises.
I do enjoyed Walking with Shadows a lot. The characters are so good. And the story is brilliant! Jonas and Jeremy are so interesting and real. Plus the inner stories are beautifully written. A recommended read. Go on you won't regret it.
Loved it! Descriptive and full of wonderful characters. I was in the jungle along with Jonas. I felt all the heat of atmosphere. I loved how Jonas and Jeremy reacted to one another. Loved the twist at the end.
I really liked this book. The relation between Jonas and Jeremy was great and something Jonas really needed. I was really disappointed closer to the end of the story but things got better and I ended up happy with it
I thoroughly enjoyed this read, the story has stayed with me since I finished it. The stories interwoven through the main one are cleverly integrated and add so much to the base storyline. I loved the two protagonists and only figured it out right at the end - very clever indeed!
A book of twists and unexpected turns, I couldn’t wait to finish it and now I’m missing the characters. It was a joy to read and I might have to read it again.
I swear this is one of the best books I have read in a very long time and it just kept me entertained and kept the mystery going through the hole book loved it...
I love my kindle. I have found so many new great authors. Mr. Romyn has joined my "best authors" list! It's hard to describe this book. I simply couldn't put it down. It talked to me... Jonas is a well known, popular author. His world is one dimensional. No wife no kids...no fun. All he knows is how to write. His manager talks him into going to South America ...Unfortunately his plane crashes into the Amazon jungle. He alone survives...with a terrified young boy. Now it is up to him to get them back to civilization. Along with Columbian rebels, black caimans and an unrelenting background of smothering humidity, snakes and wild animals, they embark on their perilous journey. Somewhere this cold hearted , overbearing man finds his life again. Along with Jeremy there are tall tales and unexpected strange creatures. Are they real or hallucinations? This book was wonderful! A redemption for Jonas and growing up for Jeremy. Can't wait to dig into another good book from Mr. Romyn...
A new book from an author who's books I have been enjoying since I discovered him.
Mr. Romyn crosses genres with his different books and has an impressive imagination, proved by the imagination he creates for Jonas Drake.
The flash backs to Jonas' childhood and the fantastic creatures and world he created in his mind was at first fascinating but did seem to drag the story at times for me.
The writing was so well done and he is obviously extremely talented, which you can tell just from the subtle way he transform the characters where other authors tend to employ the big bang theory to character growth or evolution. It was really fascinating to read the transformation of a character that, at the beginning of the story wasn't very likable, change and grow in ways you never would have imagined.
Poor Jeremy. Could there ever be a more tragic way to have to face the realities of life, be forced to not only face it but grow up long before his time and to be stuck with a man like Jonas, when their journey starts! It's a tenuous start with two people at total opposites of not only life but morals and outlooks on life.
As happens when tragedy strikes and you're placed into impossible situations that you never imagined or thought you could survive, the human nature shines through. Jonas and Jeremy's journey is a testament to that and we get a front row seat as it all unfolds.
This is in the action/adventure genre and while it is both of those things, it really is so much more. It's a very character driven story that shows the ability of the human mind and body to overcome even the most unthinkable tragedies and circumstances to come out on the other side more that when they started.

Jonas Drake is a successful but reclusive novelist with a troubled past. He attempted to confront his childhood demons with his early fantasy short stories. Those stories didn't sell well so he changed genres and wrote crime stories for the money and fame they brought. However that didn't bring the inner peace his tortured mind craved and needed. On a return flight from Brazil, the plane crashed in the Amazon rainforest. Jonas and a ten year old boy, Jeremy, are the lone survivors. Jonas soon learned he was a product of the streets of New York City and was ill equipped to face the dangers of F.A.R.C. terrorist, wild animals, jungles natives and drug smugglers. Or was he? To placate and support Jeremy, Jonas recounted tales about characters from his early fantasy books and soon drew the boy into the world he created to escape a troubled childhood. I'm not a fantasy fan so some of those recounted stories were a bit long for my taste. But they were necessary to set the stage for what was to come. In the end, Jonas found the strength to confront and accept his past and make life altering decisions that would reshape who he had become and who he chose to be.
Overall, this is one of the best stories I've had the pleasure of reading in a long time. I highly recommend it.
The editing, sentence structure and writing style of Walking With Shadows are exemplary. In depth research is evident by its accuracy.

I had high hopes for this story all the way through but it was such a major dissapointment. The part of the story that would have made this a hit was about the relationship between they boy, Jeremy and the man, Jonas. The stories that Jonas kept telling all throughout the main novel, were insanely boring and WAY too long. I would skip one, two, three.....10 pages, and Jonas was still telling the same stupid, boring story to Jeremy, who as we find out, doesn't even exist! The author clearly thought he was being SO clever but, to me, it just seemed like a desperate attempt at something highly philosophical that fell VERY short. It wasn't philosophical at all; more like sophmoric. If the story would have focused on a real relationship between a boy who helped a cryptic older man to find his childhood, that would have been much more believeable and satisfying a story. But, the whole made up in his mind ....everything! Well that pretty much made the storytelling pointless to me. Why bother telling the story in the first place if nothing that happened in the book ever happened? It was so stupid. I'm so sorry I wasted my time on this dumb book. Don't waste your time. I skipped at least half of the chapters. Too bad because the parts that were "real" were actually very good. The parts that the author clearly thought were so clever, were the worst parts of the book. As far as I'm concerned this was a failed attempt on the authors part. Next time, stick to the real storytelling, not all the fake "philosophical" stuff in between. Horrible.
I love survival stories with people lost in the woods and this book doesn't disappoint on that level. I was right there in the Amazon with the caimans. the heat and humidity. But the story is multi-layered with physical survival, action, relationship, fantasy, and redemption. The main character is not particularly likable in the beginning, being a wealthy, neurotic, and reclusive author, but facing this life-threatening challenge brings out aspects of his self that had lain hidden. I am usually very good at predicting how a book will end, but this one surprised me. This is not just a book to read, then move on, but one to savor and ponder upon completion.
What a magnificent book! A tale of heroism, fantasy and self-realization wound around an adventure in the real jungle as well as the jungle of a brilliant man's mind. This novel will make you laugh , cry and cheer for a man and a boy who experience the ultimate challenge of surviving a terrible plane crash, bloodthirsty enemies and fantastical creatures who may or may not really exist! I loved it!
I chose this book simply because I really like the author's other works. This book seemed quite a bit different from his other books, but still kept me interested the whole way through it. I was completely surprised by the twist at the end! It did not seem quite as good as the other books ( in my opinion ), but well written and the characters were very well developed.
