The Wizard's Fate

Rate this book
A warrior returns home to reclaim all he has lost.

After a bloody ten-year war, the mighty city of Tarsis has been brought to its knees. Lord Tolandruth - once the farmer's son Tol - has led the armies of the Ergoth Empire to the enemy's very gates. Poised for final victory, instead he is recalled to Daltigoth. The Emperor is dead, and civil war threatens to tear apart the empire.

Tol takes a long, perilous journey back to the seat of power, not only to attend upon a new emperor and be reunited with the woman he loves, but to avenge himself on the wizard who caused his exile. Reclaiming his love and honor calls for sacrifices that will shape his destiny - and the future of Krynn.

My rating is 3.5 stars.

This is part of the Dragonlance realm and the second book of a trilogy. The first book must be read to understand this one. In this one we continue the adventures of Tol and his friends as he seeks out revenge against Mandes.

This was a step down from the first novel but still an enjoyable book. I believe this book suffered from what second books of a trilogy suffer. They have to connect from the first book that introduces the reader to the characters and the third book where the inevitable finale happens. While reading this novel I wanted Tol to fight his real enemy instead of Mandes. That being said I am really enjoying this trilogy as the author has carved out a nice section of Dragonlance. The authors do a terrific job with the setting and I do love the characters. I liked the introduction of the new kender and how he interacted with Tol.

This trilogy is one of the better ones of this universe. I am so looking forward to the conclusion and the battle between the antagonist and protagonist. These authors are some of the better authors from this universe and this trilogy is an example of this.

Wow truly captivating, that sorcerer is a real menace and so full of hate and with the rise to power of the new emperor things can only become worse for Tol!! Can this great hero survive these attacks on him and on those close to his heart? Gets pretty sad when everyone he cares for starts to be killed outright and magic is not like a foe one can kill in battle!

The first book ended with the character hardening from constant betrayals, swearing revenge, and the narrator suggesting that it foreshadowed his villain arc.. and this book starts a whopping 10 years later, absolutely nothing's happened and the character's still as dumb and naive as ever? And to add salt to injury, this book has the same exact ending

Thankfully though, the rest of the book is decent enough

This book is better than the first. Lots of suspense and action. Good connections with the characters. This one has times where you want it to move on and stop drawing out things though. Unlike the last half of the first book this one isn't a soap opera. It still took a long time for me to want to finish it though. So far this is my least favorite series in the Dragon Lance Saga.

I really enjoy this author's work. Settings I don't think would be interesting they have a knack for hooking me in.

Tol is still a Mary Sue- but it’s nice to a fantasy with the stereotypical evil Wizard at the end. To actually see these spells and their uses was fantastic.

"2004: Collaboration between Paul Thompson and Tonya Cook. ""From Wizards.com: After a bloody ten-year war, the mighty city of Tarsis has been brought to its knees. The first Dragonlance novel was published in 1984. It was originally created by Laura and Tracy Hickman while driving in their car on the way to job interview. Most of the novels take place in the various regions of Ansalon, a small continent, though some have taken place on the lesser known continent of Taladas northeast of Ansalon. A bit like the Warhammer novels with a constant world and belief system but differing authors and protagonists. Also tied into gaming!

Second novel in the Ergothian series. The first novel wasn't boring but nothing spectacular neither, just a farmer's boy who become the Emperor's champion with a ton of luck.

This book is a little better because the authors didn't have to find reason to give him special power or to justify his ascension. You may even skip the first book! Now you have a veteran warrior returning after a 10 years campaign to his Emperor side, seeing his love again and find two powerful enemies in the sorcerer Mendes (always referred as a sorcerer in the book, should have put it in title too) and Prince Nazarim who just jealous of him.
Little intrigue here and there, not really bad.. until the end of Mendes. It was really obvious that Tol will kill him (did that to all his enemie anyway) but wasn't really an epic confrontation (one that Tol didn't finish with his sword!).
The book finish with the Prince Narazim taking control of the empire and banishing Tol after beating him. This set the last book when Tol will come back.. and kill him I guess:)

At least enough good to read the last book.

The hero Tol finds himself betrayed and discarded but continues to find ways to serve the empire and return to prominence, despite the efforts of his betrayer to eliminate him once and for all.
