Satyajit Ray (Bengali: সত্যজিৎ রায়) was an Indian filmmaker and author of Bengali fiction and regarded as one of the greatest auteurs of world cinema. Ray was born in the city of Calcutta into a Bengali family prominent in the world of arts and literature. Starting his career as a commercial artist, Ray was drawn into independent filmmaking after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and watching Vittorio De Sica's Italian neorealist 1948 film, Bicycle Thieves.
Ray directed 36 films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. He was also a fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, calligrapher, graphic designer and film critic. He authored several short stories and novels, primarily aimed at children and adolescents.
Ray's first film, Pather Panchali (1955), won eleven international prizes, including Best Human Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival. This film, Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (1959) form The Apu Trilogy. Ray did the scripting, casting, scoring, and editing, and designed his own credit titles and publicity material. Ray received many major awards in his career, including 32 Indian National Film Awards, a number of awards at international film festivals and award ceremonies, and an Academy Award in 1992. The Government of India honoured him with the Bharat Ratna in 1992.
Early Life and Background: Ray's grandfather, Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury was a writer, illustrator, philosopher, publisher, amateur astronomer and a leader of the Brahmo Samaj, a religious and social movement in nineteenth century Bengal. Sukumar Ray, Upendrakishore's son and father of Satyajit, was a pioneering Bengali author and poet of nonsense rhyme and children's literature, an illustrator and a critic. Ray was born to Sukumar and Suprabha Ray in Calcutta.
Ray completed his B.A. (Hons.) in Economics at Presidency College of the University of Calcutta, though his interest was always in Fine Arts. In 1940, he went to study in Santiniketan where Ray came to appreciate Oriental Art. In 1949, Ray married Bijoya Das and the couple had a son, Sandip ray, who is now a famous film director.
Literary Works: Ray created two of the most famous fictional characters ever in Bengali children's literature—Feluda, a sleuth in Holmesian tradition, and Professor Shonku, a genius scientist. Ray also wrote many short stories mostly centered on Macabre, Thriller and Paranormal which were published as collections of 12 stories. Ray wrote an autobiography about his childhood years, Jakhan Choto Chilam (1982). He also wrote essays on film, published as the collections: Our Films, Their Films (1976), Bishoy Chalachchitra (1976), and Ekei Bole Shooting (1979).
Awards, Honors and Recognitions: Ray received many awards, including 32 National Film Awards by the Government of India. At the Moscow Film Festival in 1979, he was awarded for the contribution to cinema. At the Berlin Film Festival, he was one of only three to win the Silver Bear for Best Director more than once and holds the record for the most Golden Bear nominations, with seven. At the Venice Film Festival, he won a Golden Lion for Aparajito(1956), and awarded the Golden Lion Honorary Award in 1982. In 1992 he was posthumously awarded the Akira Kurosawa Award for Lifetime Achievement in Directing at the San Francisco International Film Festival.
Satyajit Ray, according to me is a gem of Bengali literature. This oscar-winning author has gifted us some stunning fictional characters which includes 'Feluda',' Professor Shonku','Tarini Khuro'.
Today I will be reviewing the two omnibus volumes of 'THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF FELUDA'published by penguin books. These two volumes are translated in English from Bengali in a very easy and simple language by Gopa Majumdar. These two volume encounters 35 gripping tales of suspense and mystery.' THE MYSTERIOUS TENANT', 'THE HOUSE OF DEATH' 'FELUDA IN LONDON' ' THE ROYAL BENGAL MYSTERY','THE GOLDEN FORTRESS'' and THE SECRET OF THE CEMETERY' are my personal favourites.
The protagonist of the book Pradodh C. Mitter ( widely known as Feluda, the suffix'da' is shorter for dada which refers to an elder brother )is a private investigator who resides with his cousin in 21 Rajani Sen Road, Ballygunge, Kolkata. However, a third character was introduced later on called Lalmohon Ganguli, writer of cheap, popular thrillers. Satyajit Ray was an avid reader of Sherlock Holmes. In fact, this led to the creation of FELUDA. Feluda's first story was 'FELUDAR GOENDAGIRI'( DANGER IN DARJEELING), is the beginning of the feluda series which was first published in the year 1965 in SANDESH MAGAZINE.
I would recommend everyone to read the series of FELUDA. The series is an absolute worth read.
Satyajit Ray 's Feluda aka Pradosh Mitter is a Private Investigator based in Calcutta. Along with his cousin Topshe and his friend jatayu , he solves baffling mysteries. And feluda is also the first detecive story I read in my childhood.
Pradosh Chandra Mitra (Mitter), the private detective, is the main character in a series of detective stories written by Satyajit Ray. More familiarly known by his nickname, Feluda, Pradosh Chandra Mitra is a Bengali detective who solves mysteries using his incisive intellect.
The stories were an interesting read with the essence of Bengal mixed with the aroma of suspense. A milder version of Byomkesh Bakshi and Sherlock Holmes.
Was an engaging read. Women characters were missing. I am giving one extra star because my mother is reading it without me trying to get her into it. This has led to her locking each room of the house before she goes to sleep.
I picked this book in my local book store sale because of it being written by Satyajit Ray.Satyajit Ray is one of the greatest filmakers of the 20th century. He was awarded the " Oscar for Lifetime Acheivement" in 1992.He was also a voracious reader and popularly remembered for the creation of one of the prominent fictional detectives of India called "Feluda".
This book was originally written in Bengali. This English translated version published by Penguin is very simple and easy to read.
We meet Feluda aka Pradosh C Mitter,a young private investigator who along with his 15 year old nephew, who also serves as the narrator in these stories, solve crimes.Yes, Feluda is inspired by Sherlock Holmes,in the story itself Feluda mentions his admiration for Holmes. In total Ray wrote 35 Feluda stories, but this book contains only four. They are
1)Kailash Chowdhurys Jewel
2)The Key
3)The Anubis Mystery- (Anubis,is the Egyptian god of mummification and the afterlife.)
Loved it ! I love feluda and bomkesh bakshi :) Awesome !!! A must read like any Satyajit Ray novel..most of feludas mystery books feel like a travelogue - full of tiny encyclopediac info..and even a foodies delight...thrill ,adventure and humour thrown in for good measure.. all ingredients for an engrossing n intelligent read.. A roller coaster of a read/ride :p
Satyajit Ray 's Feluda aka Pradosh Mitter is a Private Investigator based in Calcutta. Along with his cousin Topshe, he solves baffling mysteries. This book is a collection of 4 stories- Kailash Chowdhury's Jewel, The Key, The Anubis Mystery and The Mysterious Tenant. A superb read!!
Those who enjoy detective style fiction this is for them. Feluda the popular character of Satyajit Ray's fiction makes one enjoy how Feluda solves the mysteries. This book contains 4 stories. Easy and quick read.
Stories meander with arbitrary solutions, culprits are all supposedly masterminds who make simple fallible lies and alibis.Helped pass an afternoon, but might as well have watched one of his films instead.
For a Bengali author in the 1950’s, it must have been quite an achievement to be recognised for this writing. The stories are witty, short enough to not be boring, and mysterious. The English translation is better than I expected.
