A travel book that will make you not want to travel.
This book is a collection of blog posts from the author’s time solo traveling across all 47 prefectures in Japan. I was especially interested in this book because the Japanese blurb writes that she “won’t be forcing [herself] to eat local delicacies or conquer all of the sightseeing spots. Just go and see what it’s like”. But I didn’t find this to be true. There were times when she tried to force herself to eat something she didn’t like, and then tried to cover it up to avoid shame from the restaurant staff. And yes she didn’t try to go to every sightseeing spot, but in almost every chapter of the book she writes “I didn’t go here” “I didn’t try this” “I couldn’t do this because of X reason” “I wanted to try this but I was too afraid to ask”. Then at the end of the chapter, you see her expenses list. And actually… she did a lot! Imagine writing a book about all of the things you DIDN’T do. This is that book.
At the end of every chapter, she includes a short comic about her experience in that prefecture. That was cute. And some of her stories were funny and relatable. I was excited to see what she would say when she traveled to my prefecture.
But overall, this book was overwhelmingly negative. I understand as blog posts she was likely just venting to her followers, but the content should have changed before becoming a published work. When she DID get to my prefecture, only to write about all of the things she didn't try and was too scared to do, I was so disappointed. I could only imagine how it must feel for people native to these prefectures to read all of her negative comments. It was a surprisingly depressing book.
