What do you do when love gives you a second chance at life?
Jack Malloy is haunted.
Haunted by memories, he tries to escape the dreams that have stolen his sleep for six months by agreeing to help out his sister Nicky. Unfortunately, time at her ranch offers him no escape when he's confronted by Rebecca Connor's beautiful gray eyes. For unbeknownst to her, she is a participant in his nightmares every night.
Rebecca Connor is haunted.
Haunted by memories she's trying to escape that have stolen her future. Her attraction to Jack is unsettling for a woman that has sworn off men. But something keeps drawing her closer to him, and she can't help but wonder what his hands would feel like on her skin. Fate pushes them together when they become stranded, snowbound, on a lonely Wyoming ranch. There they rediscover what living is all about. With passion hotter than the sun, they learn to feel pleasure together, how to trust again, and how to love. But is it enough to face the demons of their past, or will they forever be haunted?

This is totally a character driven read. There is little conflict and what little there is gets resolved swiftly.
I would say this is a stand alone, but I felt like I missed out on a lot of backround because I didn't read the first one. The history was filled in only lightly but enough to get the gist.
I did feel there were times that the story got a little boring and I did skim a little. I also got the feeling that the author was really trying to add more conflict at the end to lengthen it. The problem was in the reason for the separation of the H & h (only 2 months) at about 80%. It just seemed lame. I really don't buy the fact that Jack (hero) thought Rebecca didn't love him and was only with him because of his sister.
All in all, it was enjoyable and I would recommend it to those who are looking for a nice easy sweet confort read.
Safety issues:
Heroine has traumatized past of being raped. (Not detailed). H is a virgin No cheating or straying during their separaton No OW A little violence Some mild cursing The insta love is debatable. But I guess it probably does lean towards insta love.
What a lovely, sweet romance between two people who really need some love in their lives. These two go through so much, they really deserve a break, but although the story is based on a whole series of awful experiences, it's not sad or tragic, but quite hopeful and just wonderfully sweet. It was a real Ah!! read for me.
The rest of the family were moderately important to the plot, but didn't annoy me, or get in the way, or change characters (that seems to happen in series sometimes, and drives me bonkers).
I would probably give this 4.5, but bumped it up to 5 since it left me with a sappy smile on my face.
Its been quite some time since I've read a book as sickly sweet as this one. Not as in a sweet romance, but in dialog and some of the plot, which was about as unoriginal as it gets. I literally wanted to gag in parts. Insipid and uninspiring. Major eye roller and DNF for me.
I needed a book with chaps or rawhide, after coming off a werewolf erotica kick, and this one delivered some good western smexy times. Beth Williamson is a good author for this style 0f writing - her heroes are typically Alpha charmers, her females are either rough and tough, or rescue-worthy, or a nice combination of both. "The Prize" is a western historical set in nineteenth century Wyoming, with rape victims, virgin Heroes, bandits, cougars, blizzards, more bandits, and the birthing of both mares and human babies. There's a good old fashioned wedding proposal at the end, too. A good read.
Another good story from this talented author. She is brilliant at conveying emotion and her heroes and heroines are well rounded and interesting.
The second book in this series tells the story of Jack Malloy, brother to Nicky from book one and the relationship between him and Rebecca. Rebecca was Nicky's best friend, rescued in book one after she had been abused by the man Nicky killed. Both have secrets and both need to heal in their own way.
Man.... does it get any better. Nothing like ... banditos ... blizzards and babies!! I liked this book only thing that could've made it better ... is an audio format ...
Jack Malloy is haunted, he can't sleep. Every time he does, his sleep is riddled with nightmares from his memories, imagination and what Rebecca has been through. Rebecca Connor is haunted as well. She believes herself to be damaged and broken woman of what she once was, inside and out. She has survived the evil that seems to haunt more members from the Mallory family then anyone knew. Jack and Rebecca are attracted to each other, but won't act on it because of their pasts. But once they are in the same room together and actually start to get to know each other, they become closer then ever.Jack stops having nightmares and Rebecca doesn't flinch at a mans touch. Jack and Rebecca start falling for each other. "The second reason is to ask you...is to ask you if you would..." He cleared his throat. "That is...will you, only if you want to, of course...um...marry me?" "Because you see, I love you, Becky. I love you so much it hurts to think of us ever being apart. And I need you, more than I need my next breath. In fact, I don't even want to breathe if I can't be with you. I've only been half-alive for the past two months. You are my life." "Yes,yes, a thousand times yes. Oh, Jack, I love you, too."
The Prize was a great read. It was filled with two people learning to trust each other, growing to love, and becoming great friends. I enjoyed reading it, did make me cry at some parts. But I loved to read it. Can't wait to get started on the next one.
Each night Jack Malloy had debilitating and terrifying nightmares featuring his sister Nicky's best friend, Rebecca Connor, no matter what since Nicky came home. He hoped helping his brother in law, Tyler, finish his and Nicky's house additions quickly would take care of that problem. Meanwhile, Tyler had requested Rebecca visit Nicky and help with the baby and house decorations. She'd arrived.
Nicky asks Becky to help find out what's bothering Jack. Becky reluctantly agrees because Jack rushes away whenever she comes near. Trouble in the family has Nicky and Tyler rushing to her parent's home, leaving Jack and Becky at their small ranch with a teen-aged hand. Nature and the boy eliminate the awkwardness when Jack and Becky take turns needing nursing and the other takes on the duty.
The great familiar characters worked well for my taste but the too light, too convenient, too sweet storyline wrapped around an erotic tale wasn't necessarily a favorite. While it flowed smoothly at a nice pace it was ultimately a read I liked but didn't love. Rating: 3.75stars
Another winning story in this second installment of the Mallory family. Jack and Becky were both broken souls who found love, acceptance, and emotional healing in each other. I felt their pain and believed they were two halves of a whole. I would have liked the author to expand the ending a bit more--it was just a tad abrupt--but overall it was a romantic, sensitive, and satisfying tale. 3.8 stars.
I loved The Prize, too--the second in the Malloy series, this pairs one of Nikky's best friends with one of her brothers. Both are wounded people, and Ms. Williamson does a lovely job of showing their healing as they come to know each other and befriend each other. Can't wait to continue with book 3!
OMG I'm dyin I love Jack!!! Whew Jack and Rebecca's story was fabulous and I love how much it included Nicky, Tyler and Noah heck even Hermano!! This series just gets better and better so I'm off to book 3 =)
