Book Review: Bear’s Bad Mood

Bear woke up in a very bad mood. His Dad woke him up too early, then there was no cereal left for Bear to eat, he trips up over his sisters’ mess, hurting himself and just to top things off his sisters have a pillow fight in his room. Mum gets cross as all the noise and sends them all out. Bear bumps into his friends as he wondered outside but Bear didn’t feel like playing. Instead, he began to run away and hide from his friends. That plan didn’t go well! Dog sniffed Bear out from the trunk, Fox heard Bear’s breathing in the vegetable patch and Mole felt Bear’s heart beat underground. So Bear decided to climb up the tree for a little peace and quiet, away from everybody. Then suddenly, a thunder storm swayed the tree which made Bear fall down; however, his caring friends had already seen Bear in trouble and called Bear’s Dad to help him. Bear’s Dad managed to climb up the tree and catch Bear just in time. Bear spent so long trying to run away that he forgot why he was in a bad mood in the first place and so he decided to play with his friends after all.
This book opens up doors for children to express their bad moods that perhaps they feel but cannot always describe. It can also be used to highlight the qualities of good friends and the importance of friendship. This is turn can act to promote kind behavior both in and out the classroom. This is a suitable read for children in Key Stage One during story time.
