what kind of ending was that?! i threw the book down when i read it! good thing it was a library book (though i try to take care of all books). the corky spark i liked so much in the beginning was pretty much gone by this point. but that's okay, there are some off books in a series (shame to end on one though). graduation dragged on, yoh's present i feel was miss translated (only in the image, i think it should have been done less like western yearbooks -paragraphs-, and more in a circle since well, it was probably written vertically and in a circle anyway), and the long awaited tokyo arc was limited to half a chapter. haha she reverted back to her old ways in one year. haha. yeah, no! weren't they suppose to see eachother in a few months, and suddenly a year goes by and it's the first time they're meeting up? what?! does she have super hair growing powers? how can you go from a pixie cut to the middle of your back in about a year? i guess if her hair grew fast, and she refused all haircuts for an entire year, this could have happened. but it is sort of pushing it. most girls get haircuts at least quarterly (or if you're me, annually to semi-annually), and hair grows about half an inch to a full inch a month. whatever, don't care. for a series that could have been half as long to fizzle in this way was more than disappointing for me.

This volume is all about whether Yoh goes to Tokyo to study or not, and how Haruna feels about that and what she does with what she eventually decides about it and how Yoh cares for Haruna, by talking to all her friends to take care of her and that he clearly DOES NOT want this relationship to end.

They decide on a trip together, the skiing one that got misdirected last time, and in typical Haruna fashion everyone else tags along as well. A nice touch was Yoh starting to feel insecure because a happy Haruna impresses other guys than just him ^^ (we already know that he was wise enough to see that Asaoka really meant it when he liked Haruna).

And the best thing is that the scenario he comes up with and explains to Haruna is actually VERY LIKE her, heh. And then Kawahara-sensei uses this bit to really show what Haruna brings to Yoh's naturally pessimistic, sceptic look on life - her belief in the future, her optimistic self, her fantasies that run totally against what Yoh was worried about.

Again, the next chapter is a filler, even though it has it's fun side, with the whole gang being snowed in at Christmas at Yoh's family's house. We meet his mother, but not his dad. And she's a LOT like Asami.

The next chapter is Haruna being chosen as the second year representative to give the good-bye speech to the departing third years at their graduation, and the way she works on it and does a truly moving piece actually - only that it's not what she actually wrote ^^. It turned into a love letter to Yoh, and there's a really lovely scene when she reads it to him. And he's truly moved, aww. And then they make a date that she'll accompany him to the airport the next day when he flies out to Tokyo. And she cries the whole way and then he hands her his response letter, because he can't get her to shup up, and after reading it she cries even more, until she's all cried out at the airport, heh.

And they say goodbye and then... he does something totally atypical in the middle of a crowded Japanese airport. Awww ^^

And I love the three page epilogue bit ^^

Wahhh! It's over now! :( What will I do with my life now?!!! Hahaha, just kidding! I had some moments where I wasn't into this series, but overall, I have to say that I really enjoyed reading this. I had no idea that a silly popularity plotline would give way to such realistic situations. I still think that Yoh and Haruna's relationship was fleshed out in this volume and the last. I have no idea how I'd react if I was in that situation. I'd like to say I would tell my boyfriend to go ahead and leave, but deep down I think there's a huge possibility that I'd be selfish and make him stay.

I have mixed feelings about the ending. I'm happy that Haruna and Yoh worked things out, but it felt a bit abrupt. It didn't bother me that there was a fast-forward, but it confused me because it said that they hadn't seen each other in a year. I thought they had made all these plans to visit like every month or so. But apparently not. Also, I don't get why Yoh was annoyed at Haruna's outfit at the end. I thought she looked cute haha. That aside, I won't lie. I did cry at the goodbye scenes as well as a few others. Seeing Haruna and Yoh's romance facing trials was very touching.

The last lingering thought I have is anger at the author. Why the hell did box-boy not show up?!!! Yes, I'm still stuck on that haha. You don't introduce this sexy guy and then never have him show up again. What was the point of even adding him if he wasn't going to have any revelance to the plot.

Overall rating for this series 4.5 stars.

Description: Light,fun,cute,sweet,funny, and romantic

When I read the synopsis for this series, I didn't really think I was going to love it. I was wrong. The description makes High School Debut sound very run-of-the-mill. But when you've read a bit into the series, and know the characters, you find that it's much more. This series wasn't about Yoh being Haruna's "love coach". That's only how it starts. It's more about how Yoh and Haruna's relationship grew and evolved. They learned about themselves and each other. There's a lot of funny stuff along the way.

Much of the comedy came from Haruna just being clueless. Not in an annoying way, but in an innocent and naive way that I found refreshing. Also, Yoh's reactions to her clueless enthusiasm were funny and heart-warming. It was so cute watching him get embarrassed. I loved the way he covered half his face when ever he was self-conscious. I loved Haruna and Yoh! There were some really great side characters too.

Sure, this was light and fluffy shoujo. If you don't like that, then you probably won't like High School Debut. But, this series was just what I was looking for and I enjoyed each and every volume!

I am writing about the overall series. I finsihed reading the entire series on January 7, 2011.

The overal series was pretty great. I gave it a 4 star rating. Let's talk about some things now.

I. Love. Yoh. I just love him. He is so adorable! Andd I hate that I have to say that. But I can't help myself, he is SO ADORABLE! ANd cool, and awesome, and hot(lol) and all those other wors to descibe him. I love his personality and I love how he is easily embarrassed. He is just so ADORABLE!!!!!!!!!!! I want him. And for all of you who think this is creepy(which it kinda is), I tend to fall for awesome fictional male characters. I LOVE YOH. And you would too if you ever read the manga.

Haruna. In the beginning of the manga I thought she was realy, really stupid. REALLY STUPID. And then later on I thought she was realy, really annoying and too much of a perfectionist. In the end, I ended up liking her. Maybe not in the ending because I didn't know my feelings for her in the end. She kinda made me have this weird angry-nice-weird-awkward vibe towards her. Her character is really thought out though. But overall, she's all right.

In the beginning of the book, I thought the whole concept was really kinda dumb. I mean, a love coach. That's just kinda ridiculous and desperate, which Haruna was, but pathetic. Though that whole concept fades later n, it was just really ridiculous. Ri-dic-u-lous. Ridiculous.

THere are many parts that made me laugh or gag when I was reading this manga. Let's look back in my brain and take a moment to laugh at them. HAHAHAHHA! LOL! LAWLS! OMG! OMG! HUH... FUNNY! AHHHAHAHHA LMAO!AHHAHAHH!hhohohohohohoho! omg! HILARIOUS.... Sigh... Huh... Funny.

Overall, the series was really great and funny and entertaining and sweet and sad and I recommend it to everyone I know and don't know. Though, the guys out there might now like it.

P.S. I really hate Assa.
I like Fumi.
I love Asaoka. ♥♥♥

I really like that shojo manga has a different emphasis than many American and British books-comics-shows about teen romance. In this series in particular, all aspects of a healthy teen relationship are explored. The first few volumes are a little bit of a romantic comedy cliche, but the series quickly escapes that and becomes more about balancing a relationship with friends and family, about changing for the better due to a romantic partner, about expressing the physical in ways that you are ready for and not what you think people expect.

Haruna is a more relate-able character for Western audiences than many shojo heroines, I think. She is not a doormat, but she does want to be a good girlfriend and a good friend. In fact, a lot of the cultural differences were easy to spot and made for a good learning experience rather than being confused as I read. Western teens may find it odd that kissing is such an uncomfortable topic, but wouldn't it be a great starting off point for a teen to write a research paper on dating in Japan vs. US?

The few problems in relate-ability come from the differences in family relations. It's a bit uncomfortable to read about the sister character (who was pretty awful already) having a "brother-complex" and calling her brother her "ideal guy". Not to mention that the same guy's mother describes mothering a son as being somewhat "like a lover". Hurm.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this series.

I absolutely loved High School Debut. From the very beginning there was so much about Haruna and Yoh. It was funny and all the volumes made me laugh a lot. I am diappointed that it had come to an end.
I especially liked the part when Haruna was introduced to Yoh's mother. She was a bit creepy. The wholes Christmas was a joke. Hahaha
I overall loved Kazune Kawahara's manga. The story line was great. It is one of the best manga series I have read so far.

FULL SERIES REVIEW NO SPOILERS

This Manga!

I don't even have words to explain how much I loved this story! Not only was it cute. Not only was it funny. But it was also LONG! I love full love stories that go on for a while after the relationship starts!

This story is all about Haruna who wants boyfriend and how Yoh agrees to help her but insteads falling in love with her instead. This story follows their love story.

I read this non stopped and I will reread as soon as I have time.

If you love high school romances then this is the one for you.

Loved it! My main review for the series is under volume one, but this final entry in the series is one of my faves. The whole series is a 'win' as far as I'm concerned. Funny, charming, sweet...I'm sad to see it end.

Going to miss this series, wish the ending had been a little longer. At first I thought it should have been sweeter but that wouldn't have been Yoh or Haruna!

Finalmente un shojo con un romance sano. La historia es divertida, tierna y atrapante. Los dos protagonistas me caen bien, Haruna es muy graciosa y Yoh es un tipazo. Los queremos.

THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE OVERALL SERIES

OVERALL RATING: 3.5-4 STARS

This manga was very interesting, despite its ridiculous concept. It was just another manga I picked up cuz I was bored, and surprisingly, it turned out to be cool.

My favorite character is Yoh. Not because he's an adorable drawing of fiction (although I wish he is real, cuz I'm weird like that) but because of the personality the author has given him. I like how is easily embarrassed and all chill. His character is definitely a new one for me, since all the boy characters in the books I read are all either the nice guy, the mysterious guy, the bad boy guy; the jerk guy...

Haruna is cool, too. At the beginning she was all: Oh, I wanna have a boyfriend so frickin bad, so Imma be all desperate, blah, blah, blah! But as the story progressed, I found myself liking her bit more. Her insecurities were annoying, and I just wanted to smack her, but then I'd remember she's a drawing, so that wouldn't work. Even if I hit the drawing itself, someone's bound to notice, and people already think I'm a freak (in a good way, I think...)

Asaoka and Fumi are two others I really liked; Assami is just weird, but ok. Oh, and at one point of the story, it felt like Assami was in love with her brother or something o.O awkward...

In this manga, I found myself LOL-ing a lot, and that's what made me rate this manga 4: the humor. Without the humor, I don't think I would've liked this manga very much.

Now, the author prolonged the manga, and she rushed in too fast for the romance for my liking. If I had it my way, I think I would've focused on the objective of the story first: "coach" Haruna to become cool and popular or whatever. That just occurs at the beginning... I felt like I was reading some sappy OMG, I LUV U SOOO FRICKIN MUCH AND I WILL PROTECT U NO MATTER WAT, more Edward crap but this coming from a girl, and Yoh's all: ... Waaaaaaaah? ... all the time.

The author, too, doesn't give a reason why there IS an attraction between Yoh and Haruna. At the beginning of their relationship, it wasn't convincing and I felt it was fake, but later on, I could feel the chemistry, no matter how werid, butween them.

I still don't know exactly why Yoh fell in luv with her, but ok.

Ok, I know I'm contradicting a lot about what I said earlier, so take this as the negative parts of the manga (:

That would be all (:

This series is killing me. Honestly, the more I read, the more I fall in love. I don't know where I can read the last two books though! They're not on any manga websites that I know of. :(

I wish my high school years would've went a little something like this, but unfortunately there were no Yohs in my school. And I wasn't the outgoing type. I better make plans and accommodations for approximately 30 cats in my future life.

I think it was a cute end to this series, although I do have a slight issue. I feel like the graduation dragged on a bit too much and, that Yoh’s departure along with his and Haruna’s reunion was a bit rushed as a result.
However, I do know that there are 2 extra volumes that explore how Yoh and Haruna cope with their long-distance relationship. Hopefully I can read those volumes at some point within the year or 2, since this was a really wholesome series.

I really liked this series and I love Yon and Haruna, they're just the cutest pair!!! The only reason this didn't get 4 stars like I gave the rest of the series is because it ended so abruptly! Just *BAM* year over and now they're reunited. I wanted more!!!!

I recommend this series.

I like the structure—I like that the story continues once they’re together and that Yoh and Haruna are always communicating instead of letting things drive wedges between them. Their relationship grows deeper as the series goes on, and it’s very healthy and easy to root for.

Yoh, the male lead, was phenomenal. He’s one of those attractive, distant and cold-seeming types who secretly harbors feelings. I feel like this kind of male lead often verges into mean territory, or you really wonder if they even like the female MC at all, but Yoh has lots of moments of genuine sweetness and you can see from the start through his actions that despite his harsh exterior, he really cares for people.

Many of the side characters are fun—I especially like the conniving ones for how they offset Haruna.

The main problem is Haruna, though. She’s the reason why this isn’t one of my favorite romance manga. I liked her a great deal at the start. I like the idea of her. But, especially as the manga continues, her naivety, straightforwardness, and trust in people is so exaggerated it’s not believable. People will be very cruel to her and she’ll completely misunderstand them in the most positive way possible. I think that even someone naive or not skilled with social situations would pick up on some of the animosity that flies over Haruna’s head.

Her character isn’t completely stagnant, but she also doesn’t grow very much—the ending of the manga highlights this in a joke I found pretty unsatisfying. So much of her time in the story is her doing unbelievable things that you can only really enjoy the manga if you’re able to suspend your disbelief where she’s concerned. It’s frustrating, because I feel like the manga would have been more interesting if Haruna’s character traits were treated with more subtlety.

THIS WAS SO GOOD!!! *sobs*

I absolutely loved this series so very much! It was such a moving romance and while I was worried about the ending, this volume was heartfelt. It was also funny because we have this moving, teary-eyed moment (talking about me too, not just the characters LOL) and then because "reality" would hit, it made me burst out laughing.

This mangaka has had a very fun way of reminding the reader TO have fun. So many times I've laughed and just really enjoyed reading about Haruna and Yoh. They are a fantastic couple and while I think Haruna HAS grown, you can definitely see how Yoh has grown. He's more open than he was in the first volume and I think Haruna is much more confident because of Yoh's love.

While I was sad this volume was the final volume, I found myself laughing on the last page and just really happy. I liked how Haruna found something for herself, how she helped Yoh in more ways than one, and how Haruna met Yoh's mom. That was a great chapter and equally funny! LOL!

I've read this series in the omnibus editions and while this IS the final volume, the omnibus edition has two bonus volumes that take place right before the last two to three pages and is called High School Debut: Long Distance Romance. I definitely plan to dive into those stories next because while I feel happy with the ending, I definitely am not ready to say goodbye to this couple!

Wow. My feelings have made a turn since the first time I read this series ten years ago. (More or less)
I used to think Yoh was so mature and older compared to Haruna. I'll admit I used to have a crush on him 😂. Now I realize he's only ONE year older then her and he's not exceptionally mature. He's an introvert and has a hard time expressing his emotions. While Haruna is very energetic and expresses her emotions ALOT! Haruna comes off as too naive and gullible at the start but as I read on she became my favorite character. I love her so much. She's strong, is always there for Yoh, always protects Yoh, and she's cute. ❤❤

The only person I seriously dislike is Yohs sister. She's spoiled, annoying and I don't understand why everyone puts up with her. She has a brother complex and she apparently has a brothers friend complex because every time Haruna is progressing with her love life Yohs sister suddenly feels lonely and left and out so she causes a scene. 🙄🙄

I still recommend. Beware that this series is innocent so the MCs physical love life progressed as far as making out and that's it.

4 1/2 stars (volumes 1-6), 3 stars (volumes 7-15)
The problem with High School Debut is that the first six volumes are probably some of the most adorable shojo manga you'll ever read, but from volume seven onward the story is lackluster at best. The first six volumes are the story of Haruna, a lovable oddball, winning the love of the popular Yoh. The pair, while seemingly mismatched, brings out the best in each other, resulting in one of the sweetest storylines I've read. Unfortunately, the series should have ended there, from volume seven on, the remainder of the series is the same tired shojo tropes you've read a hundred times already. Plus as we delve into the stories of some of the side characters, we see just how unlikable many of them are. Blerghh. My advice is to enjoy the first half of the set and not bother with the rest as most of it is unnecessary filler.

This was a great volume to end the series (though technically there are still 2 more volumes to go as the mangaka wrote some additional volumes later on). This series was a lot of fun to read, it was never boring and sometimes it was hilarious. Haruna got on my nerves at times but overall I really liked her character and she could be quite funny. Yoh was great too. I think I'd give it a 7.5-8 out of 10 stars overall.
I really like older manga especially from the early 2000s as I find the stories have more depth to them and the characters have a lot of personality, plus the art styles are very unique and less generic from a lot of newer series.

Had my ups and downs with the series I def see how if you not used to the humor or exaggeration of it it’s way less enjoyable. I exaggerated good parts were great but it made the daunting stuff piss me off. So it had a lot of good point and some bad. Overall not a bad classic shoujo that’s a bit silly with all the standard tropes but they are all still present! 7/10*
EDIT:: 2 volumes were added after this original ending that’s only available legally in the Omnibus vol 5 for Viz, which is out of print and I’m not going to spend the extra money to read added on volumes. If it gets reprinted or a good deal I’ll consider it and buy the series otherwise I can’t justify the purchase.

Officially the final volume of the series. However, to promote the live action movie, Kawahara produced two more volumes following the events of this volume with each chapter being almost one shots.

As for this volume, it was great. I particularly liked the xmas visit to Yoh's place and an introduction to Yoh's mother (can totally see why Asami is as she is).

Overall a great series. Not sure if I'll watch the movie as I've never been much of a fan of live action remakes of my fave animes/mangas but we'll see.

I'm happy I picked up this series. Recommended to all shoujo fans out there.

Screaming, crying, throwing up, and emotionally eviscerated due to this volume. Just as sweet and tender and painful as I remember it. It’s fantastic the way they handle Yoh pursuing his passions even if it takes him further from Haruna. And I love this series so so much.

I’ve never been able to pick up vol 14 and 15 so I will need to order the omnibus soon! Since it appears that is the only way to see them in English - though I want to work on collecting them all anyway lol.

I absolutely loved this series. This is a great series with a great example of a healthy relationship. Yeah, it was extra af sometimes but I love that kind of humor. It was hard to put these books down. I had to read more. I’m about to read the final 3-in-1 vol to see what happens in vol 14 and 15 that didn’t get published in the original printing!!!
