Miriam doesn't understand why her mum is buying more food than they need, and storing it away. Or why her parents have given her the nickname, Mandy. Her friend Pam says it's because war is coming. And, if the Nazis invade, it will be dangerous for her to have a Jewish name. But that's not going to happen, is it?
Miriam doesn't know why her parents start calling her Mandy. Then she finds out that the Germans don't like Jewish people and are taking them away to camps. Although the Germans haven't invaded Britain yet, her parents don't want to take any chances. How can Miriam feel safe with everything that is happening?
An interesting look at a child's perspective of the outbreak of WWII. Looking forward to seeing what my class think of it.
