Oh Christ of the Chicken Coop - wrote a passable review of this book I last read when I was 12 only to lose my red headed stepchild of a book review due to mishandling of my iPad while reaching for another sip from my morning coffee.

Not going to rewrite that review.

Recommended introduction to assorted UFO speculations. Preferably if you’re 12 years old.

This enjoyably silly volume on Bermuda Triangle lore is a companion piece to Winer's documentary The Devil's Triangle. Surprisingly, Winer evinces a healthy skepticism to the whole Triangle phenomenon, preferring to tease out rational explanations for the disappearances of ships, planes and people rather than indulging in wild supernatural fantasies like, say, Charles Berlitz or John Wallace Spencer (whom he specifically calls out for conjuring bogus claims of mystery). Thus he ascribes the Marine Sulfur Queen's fate to a cargo explosion, the USS Cyclops disappearance to a possible mutiny... it's conjecture to be sure, but more reasonable than aliens or Atlantis. He makes his share of errors (repeating the easily-debunked tale of the Raifuku Maru and its "danger like dagger now!") and indulges in purple prose, but this is forgivable for entertainment, if not strictly factual purposes. Winer clearly enjoys spinning bits of nautical lore, with a wink letting you know that he doesn't necessarily believe in what he's writing, but can't we just pretend? Slight but fun supernatural reading; compared to other Triangle books, it's a work of matchless scholarship. Winer later republished much of the material in his 2000 book Ghost Ships.

The Bermuda Triangle has a strong fascination on my since the 1980s. Can the author add any new insights in his books? Well, he starts strong with the disappearance of Flight 19 and the first missing ship in 1502 but then the book remains a bit repetitive and plain. You get the usual speculations on the reasons why there are missing ships and planes, natural and supernatural but there is nothing new under the sun. Maybe rather for those who have their first encounter with the Devil's Triangle. Definitely not for the advanced reader in these phenomenons.

Kinda hokey but great 70s read. Discussed a lot of boats planes and people that went missing with no evidence. The creepiest part is compasses spinning out of control and electronic systems failing in The Triangle. It’s known that it has a strong magnetic pull there. And freak storms do come up. .

Was hoping it would be more of one story and told in depth, instead it was just a bunch of different, briefly touched accounts of stuff disappearing in the ocean…
Eh.

Richard Winer does and excellent job of stating the facts concerning the many disappearances in the Devil's Triangle of all sizes of boats and planes, since the time of Columbus. He's stays neutral on whether or not there are supernatural reasons for their disappearances, and let's the reader decide for himself or herself, which I love!

This was one of those rare books that I didn't want to finish reading, because it was so wonderful! Winer gives the reader his painstaking research and adds his personal experiences in the Devil's Triangle, aka the Bermuda Triangle, and this made the book so fascinating and hard to put down. I definitely want to see the documentary on this book, narrated by the fabulous Vincent Price. This book makes me want to read more books on this topic, which I find so intriguing.

Oh, so many historical inaccuracies. The writing isn't the most objective, either, but I think he really tries. It's definitely interesting. Each chapter focuses on a different historical event. It's a good insight into the history of our fascination with the Bermuda Triangle, and it offers tantalizing stories of adventure and despair. Just don't take it as the final historical fact. Still, this book should get some credit for piquing my curiosity and making me want to research some of this in more depth.

it was okay. read this 50 years ago give or take a month or two. devil's triangle, ufo stories. it was only late in life where and when casual conversation leather and laced with condescension informed me i'd best keep my interests to my self. yeah, right, like drug runners were responsible for the disappearance of a flight of military aircraft. insert cartoon character clutching seat of pants, ach du liber! mine arsch!

I enjoyed this thoroughly; he mixed being informative with being creative. It just wasn't a list of all the different planes and ships that disappeared in the Triangle; he gave each one it's own story with details that made it much more interesting to read. Recommended to anyone who enjoys the Bermuda Triangle :D

Did they sink? Were they abducted? Who knows? Better question is who cares? This book is all yarn and no knitting.

I learned about the mysterious disappearances of planes over the "devil's tiangele", a popular subject, as I remember, back in the '70s. Don't know that the book convinced me there's anything to it!

At one time I was all into the Bermuda Triangle stuff. So the book was fascinating at the time. Now, less so, though still a good read for its genre.
