Shows and describes houses, mansions, and plantation homes in Virginia, Texas, the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, Maryland, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, and looks at each home's furnishings
Beautiful book of twenty of the prettiest homes in the country. From Shadows on The Teche in Louisiana to Whitehall In Florida and Dunleith in Natchez Mississippi this is a beautiful representation of majestic homes.
I picked up this book hoping that it would give me a good sense of design principles suitable for homes in the heat & humidity of the South - definitely not the book for that. Arranged chronologically from the dates the houses were built, there’s a one page intro on the historical context of each house, followed by 2-5 full page spreads of mostly the interiors with descriptions of the period furnishings. You can tell the publisher loved the homes, although the language is a little verbose & bourgeois.
