Changing Chords

Life.

With a thump it courses through our veins. Love, music, drugs, passion, anger.

My name is Evangaline Hart, and my ex-boyfriend left me to die in the middle of Death Valley. He doesn't know I made it out alive, so I've been on the run from the the Prez of an MC called Victorious. So I do what I have to survive: I hide -- he can never find me, because I won't live to tell the tale.

Awkwardy Amazing, Amazingy Awkward, better known as 4A, the worlds hottest rock back of the last decade.
While everything seems perfect on the outside, all the members of the band have some sort of demon to fight with.

Madden is trying to better his life after overcoming addiction. But doing a cross country tour with drugs all around him isn't easy.

Bryson would rather not talk about anything and keeps everything bottled up, rather speaking through his music.

Wolf has been fighting to be his own person since the day the was born. Being the next big musical prodigy has taken his toll on him. So he does the only thing he can: rebel.

Xem is furious. With himself, at the people around him, at his family and at the world. Xem doesn't discriminate; he's just angry with everyone.

My name is Evangaline, but you can call me Evan, and this is my story about going on tour with 4A while running for my life.

***

Changing Chords is the first book in the Diserted Lilies Trilogy. It's a contemporary reverse harem about a rock band and an MC.

Kris Vanc (pen name) is a thirty something living in The Netherlands. She writes smutty books, because once she fell down that rabbit hole there was no getting out of it. Mostly because she's a giant klutz and once she's down she can't get back up. Oh well. Between working and her family, she writes what the voices tell her during the day. No worries, her therapist assures you she's somewhat sane.

Loves a good character development, redemption, banter and jokes. Give her a book, coffee, something to eat (anything really) and she's good to go. Large collection of book boyfriends. Has a weird obsession with serial killers.

Great start!

This is a fantastic start to a new series. The fmc (Evan) is hiding from a former ex, keeping a low profile as a rehab nurse. A few months spent helping a rockstar in rehab and she finds herself pulled to help him stay sober while he get back on tour. She meets a group of his friends (brothers) that are each very unique guys. It becomes quite obvious how broken each of them are in their own ways. The plot is great. The characters feel real and their pain is raw and visceral. I couldn't put this down. Imagine my thrill to realize all three books are out and I can binge through this non-stop. Yay!

World building: 🌍🌍🌍🌍🌍
Character development: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Heat: 🔥🔥🔥
Romance: ❤❤ (the chemistry is there but this is a bit of a slow build, nothing insta)
Triggers: A little bit of OW (before the guys are officially with her).
Relationships: MFMMM (no mm, no ff)

I’ve received an ARC for this baby and I’m giving my honest opinion/review here

Fair warning: it’s a big review 🤭

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started this book but I was curious as hell because a rehab nurse with a rock band and MC involved AND reverse harem? sign me the fuck up!

I’ll say this: this book grabbed me by my imaginary balls and didn’t let me go. I couldn’t put it down! The story is addictive: you get the smut but you get the amazing (and very well written) story and ALL the feelings from the characters because each and everyone of them is fighting something. We get to see the bonds between them forming and it’s beautiful.

The fmc and her men are equally interesting and complex, and you’ll want to find out everything you can about them.

Evan is and probably will be one of my favorite FMCs I’ve read in a while. She’s tough but gentle, she’s feisty but understanding and she’s undeniably herself. No drama, no childish impulses, no doubting her strength and her needs. You need a mature FMC that still has shit to pull through and is still badass? She’s your girl.

The boys. Ah…

Madden is such a lost soul. You’ll fall in love with him right in the first chapter and you’ll want to heal him and protect him at all costs. He’s unequivocally himself. Seeing him in need of help and Evan making sure she’s there for him every time melted my heart.

Bryson is Bryson. Special. The quiet ones… ya know? I love him so much. We need to know more about him, his past and what makes him tick.

Wolf is the rare funny one. He’s relentless in his pursuit of Evan but never losing his uniqueness and never betraying himself for a woman.

Xem. Haha. He’s my favorite. Be prepared, that’s all I have to say. You’ll wanna str4ngle him because he has A LOT of issues but I feel that he’s the one that’s gonna protect Evan the most in the future. Love her fiercely.

Even the side characters are great. They add to the story and make it lighter, more real and they also help us understand a bit more about the boys and their past.

Overall, Kristi did an AMAZING job with this one and honestly it’s my favorite of hers! I can’t wait to read the sequel because THAT ENDING WAS HARSH!!!

I really have nothing to say but ‘pure brilliance’.

Just kidding – I always have more to say!

I first stumbled across Kris Vanc’s books in January this year. Her ‘Hidden by Hours' trilogy was recommended on another author’s Facebook page. That should indicate how awesome her books are.

I read that trilogy in just under two days, quickly moving on to ‘The Charlington Chronicles trilogy. Again, MUST reads and absolutely DEMOLISHED by an avid reader who loves an amazing plot and characters that make you fall in love, while also acknowledging the humanness that is within us all. Nobody is without flaws, and Kris Vanc’s characters show us that one person’s flaws are another person’s sign of strength.

Then came ‘Changing Chords’.

Four (maybe five!!) main men who bare their souls and make you fall in love with them.

Madden – a recovering addict who demonstrates his strength in recovery while also remaining vulnerable to those who love and support him. Wolf - an outlandish character who is confident in himself yet shows his softer side when supporting and encouraging his brothers. Bryson - (OMG! Bry!!), the silent but absolutely deadly hunk, who makes me dream of removing his hoddie and seeing the real him. And Xem… yeah, there’s still hope for him and Evangeline! He may be prickly, but so are the cacti in the desert where we first find Evangeline – saved by another guy who is out to protect her. No idea where that is going, but I’ve dreamt of Dominic calling me ‘Kitten’!

This is just the start of their journey to find each other. One woman who has suffered heartbreak, betrayal, and loss, merging with four men who have formed a brotherhood through shared experiences and adversities, while being one of the most successful rock bands ever known.

This book is full of touching emotive scenes and a few steaming hot encounters. There is no doubt that things will only get hotter!

If I could give it more than 5 stars I would!

*6 star review

I've read and enjoyed every book this author has written so far, but there are no words to describe how much I loved this latest book! Seriously; I've thought for hours how I would explain how awesome this book was and everything I think of still seems to fall short. The storyline immediately grabbed me from the start, the emotions truly got to me and I fell head over heels for some of these characters. Five stars are simply not enough to show how extraordinary I believe this book is.

"Changing Chords" has everything needed in an awesome rockstar RH Romance! First of all there are the hot men with loads of musical talent, and the tortured souls of true artists. I'm the first to say this, so let it all be clear and final: I claim Wolf, I licked him, he's mine. His quirkiness, the ways he expresses his love for his friends and Evan, the depth to his feelings, his talent, his looks, ... I could go on and on about the man, but the most important thing: he's mine now, to join my harem of book boyfriends! He's not the only great guy to fall in love with Evan though: Madden and Bryson absolutely touched a part of my heart as well, Xem has enough credit left to find his way there and I'm curious to see what role Dominique might play in the future...

And there is so much more than just these men: there is music, there is the entire experience of being on tour, there are struggles both between these characters and between mind and body, they experience threats within and around them, ... But what I loved most of all, is the love and true bromance these bandmates have with each other. With all of their troubled pasts, they found unconditional love with each other and it was so awesome to watch.

So yeah: this book is truly awesome, I loved it from start to finish and I can't wait to see what will happen next!

First time author for me when I picked up Changing Chords. I saw Whychoose, MMC, and Rockstars, and from there, i was like ok I am reading this now.
Evan was with Nathan in his MMC when she found out about drugs and she couldn't condone it, so he took her to Death Valley to leave her to die. She gets lucky and barely makes it but has to start over in a new life

Madden has been in rehab since Od in his rockstar lifestyle and now, after 5 months, has to go back to tour, and he is not ready. He asks his rehab nurse Evan, who he is very attached to come with him to help him stay sober.

She is nervous since Nathan, her ex mmc is all over the place but goes because she cares. She meets the band mates, Wolf, the violinist, Bryson Bass, Miles Guitar, who is happily married and a baby, and Xem drummer with a bad attitude and hates her.
The book really is after they meet an inner monologue of Madden battling soberity, Evan protecting him and the guys getting used to having him.back and being better.
Wold and Bryson have immediate connection with her, and Madden does as well but can not date for a year to focus on his soberity. I like that each guy has allt of family badge that made them who they ate. XEM is anger issues and a bully, but he hates change, and Evan is changing.
The book needed some editing, and it also stalled some for me. She really is trying to set up the relationships and found family, which she did, but no one knows about Evan, and she is on the run.
The ending shows that decision why she did that, but the first book is all character development. I love found family, and this has it in spades. Also, this was sort of a slow burn, which shocked me. I love the sife characters, too.

Yes, I sent ARCs out, so I think I deserve to mark this as 'Read'. Because I've read this a million times.

Is an author supposed to leave a review on their own book? Hell yes. Do you know how hard we worked on it? I'm not just speaking for myself, but I think all authors who take the step to get their words out there should at least have one 5* review for their bravery, even if it is their own.

This is my first Multiple Point of View book. And I crawling in the heads of all these different characters. And believe me when I say, whoo, they're a little wild sometimes.
This was supposed to be a fun book. About a girl who had a lot of fun. But when everyone started to tell me their stories, it became the angstiest book I've ever written.
And I kinda love it.

Anyway. Rockstar/MC. Slooowish/mid burn I think. I'm sorry, I need the connection to build up before we stumble on random peepees. Most of you are going to hate Xem, but he's my baby. And then there's an MC - creating a whole new layer of trouble.

I thorouhly enjoyed writing this book, I hope you'll love it just as much.

Good start

I really liked this book. It was really well written with a nice plot and really likable characters. I love how these characters don't fall in love right away! They get to know each other while together on the tour bus, and friendship grows into lust and more. I also love that it's the guys who seem to fall first!!
I'm definitely interested in finding out where the story goes.
The only reason I'm giving this a 4 instead of a 5 star rating is because this book has my number one pet peeve!! It drives me crazy when a non America writes about Americans in America!! It's obvious with some of the words and phrases that were used that this author is not from America, and I just wonder why she couldn't have written the same book, but from the country she lives in? I read tons of books from Australian or brithish authors, and I love how they incorporate their vanacular into books, I don't see why they feel the need to write about countries they aren't familiar with!
Even with this, I still loved the book.

4 ⭐️ for the story and characters. I love the personalities and character development, and I appreciate that there’s not smut for smut’s sake. The author takes her time to let you get to know FMC, the band, and the supporting cast, but keeps things moving at a good pace.

Unfortunately, I also have to give this book 1.5 ⭐️ for the lack of an editor. Inconsistencies within scenes, poor grammar, and the typos! Repeated words within the same sentence (thesaurus much?), dangling participles, incorrect idioms (“catching the bull by the horns”), autocorrect gone wrong (“Ludacris” instead of “ludicrous”). Ugh!

The high school English teacher in me is cringing, but I’m going to keep reading the series for the story (it’s totally sucked me in big time). It’ll just be a challenge with all the writing issues at play.

——

UPDATE: Just found out the author is Dutch, so I’ll raise my 1.5 grammar ⭐️ to 2 ⭐️ since it’s pretty impressive for someone to write an entire novel in a language not native to them. But, still, editors are a thing.

New review: Changing Chords by Kris Vanc

5⭐️s

Kris Vanc has moved into the rockstar world and she does NOT disappoint!!

✅ a rock band on tour, on a bus
✅ a recovering addict lead singer, a broody and shutoff bassist, an angry, untrusting drummer and a classically trained violinist turned rocker
✅ a nurse who has had to reinvent herself more than once
✅ a motorcycle club

Life on a rock band tour bus can be intense, especially when everything is changing and everyone is broken in their own way. Can Evan outrun her past? Can Madden stick with his newly found sobriety while living the rock star life? What is going on with Bry? And Wolf? Will Xem being angry at the world tear it all apart?

This book will have you laughing, swooning, eye rolling, falling in love and your heart breaking. This is book one in a three book, rapid release series and ends on a cliffhanger.

Go read it! You’ll love these flawed but beautiful characters 💕

Another great cast of characters!

I found this author through another book group and have devoured every one of her books since then. I apparently don’t know how to read well, since I thought this was a completed series! Gah! At least the second book will be released within the month, so I won’t have long to wait.

As always, Kris has made a world that touches part of my heart. The violin (I played in school growing up); the rock band scene that brought back some great memories of going to crazy concerts; and having a strong, independent woman who makes the best of her situation…but the skill she has n developing her characters is her strong suit! I loved all the new people in the book and how they found each other to form their own tribe. I can’t wait to see what happens next and how the story develops from here!

I devoured this book and loved everything about it! I took a chance on Kris a while back with her first series the Charlington Chronicles and I’m so glad I did! Her writing keeps getting better and better with every series.

The guys in 4A are so well written and there’s so much depth to their characters. And Evan is the fmc authors should strive for. I just love her and her individual relationships with each of the band members, even the asshole. And Pip, omg, is the cutest thing ever.

Cannot wait for books 2 and 3!

p.s. If you haven’t read Chronicles or Tellings of the Time, go back and do it now.

This was a poignant and beautifully written book. It's a rock star rh romance, but also feels like so much more than this. I've read a lot of rock star romances but this was beautiful in that it really explored the human experience. It was a look into addiction and it's affects on not only the addict but their friends and families. It looks at mental health, found family, and discovering yourself. And all of this through the lens of some really interesting and unique characters who are well written and feel deep and three dimensional.

Evan is an addiction nurse with a sordid past with a MC. When she realizes the MC is getting too close for comfort she accepts an offer to go on tour with popular rock band who’s lead singer has just gotten out of Rehab.

This book was very well written. The characters just come to life. Each with very distinct personalities that mesh together well. Can’t wait to continue to see what will happen. Warning this book does end with a cliffhanger.

I enjoyed this book and was thoroughly invested in the first half but it was a bit slow and I didn’t feel like much was happening towards the end.

- RH (no mm)
- Differing personalities (angry, silent type, quirky & moody)
- FMC is a rehab nurse who goes on tour with her patient who is a former addict / rockstar
- Living on tour together
- FMC on the run from abusive ex
- No angst
- No steam

3 star series at many times it dipped to 2 star but after thinking it over between all 3 books i think it scraped by and got 3 stars

Evans monologues were boring and I hated how she kept on brining up that the real rockstar was the mom Keisha like ok i get it cute once but she says it way too often and she got really annoying. By the end of book 2 i was done with this series but ai mad myself read book 3. But ya I would not reread this series it had way too much boredom and was way too long.

It's perfect!

Seriously, when I recommended this book I wasn't expecting this. Such unique and well-created characters. The banter, music, the human connection makes you want to be part of this group. Real, funny, and emotionally raw. So well written. I am a fan and cannot wait for the next book. Bravo!

Engrossing

So, when I say I devoured this book, I seriously cannot even fathom how fast I read, especially considering I've been at work for the last 5 hours. Regardless, I absolutely loved this book. The story flowed beautifully and everyone is so likeable, yes even the AH. I absolutely cannot wait to see where this story goes!!
