Champion bull rider Cody Braddock has always loved the ladies. As a vampire, each time he brings a woman satisfaction, his strength grows!
But right now he's thinking only about vengeance. His mission: to hunt down and destroy the one who murdered his beloved family.
Revenge, however, takes a detour when he meets sweet, passionate Miranda Rivers. She's never experienced the big O, and she wants to -- badly! How could any man -- vamp or not -- resist?
Yet the deeper Cody drinks of Miranda's delicious charms, the more he craves. Only, Miranda wants more than just an eternity of hot sex. She wants Cody's undead heart to beat again, just for her....
I've always been an incurable romantic. While I enjoy reading all types of fiction, my favorites, the books that touch my soul, are romance novels. From sexy to thrilling, sweet to humorous, I like them all. But what I really love is writing romance--the hotter the better!
I started my first novel back in high school and have been writing ever since. To date, I've published over thirty novels, one of them a prestigious RITA Award nominee, Romance Writers of America's highest award of excellence. I have also been nominated by Romantic Times magazine for several Reviewer's Choice awards, as well as a career achievement award.
I've written for several different publishers, including Harlequin Books, Leisure Books, Berkley/Jove, St. Martin's Press and Warner Books. Born and bred in the Lone Start State, I still live deep in the heart with my real-life hero, Curt, and our young children.
Like any over-worked, under-appreciated wife and mother, I have very little free time. But when I find a few precious moments, I LOVE to read. Some of my favorite authors include Janet Evanovich, Vicki Lewis Thompson, Charlaine Harris (see my Favorite Reads page for more) and the exceptionally talented Nina Bangs. Give me a bag of Sugar Babies, a Toby Keith or Kevin Fowler CD (I love Texas music), and a great book, and I'm in heaven!
An alpha cowboy hunk + pleasure giving vampire + present day Texas setting (including my very own city of Austin) + Blaze’n hawt, hawt sex = Shawna one very happy girl! *naughty grin*
Cody Braddock is a hot, angst-laden, guilt-ridden, adrenaline junkie, alpha, champion bull-riding rodeo cowboy, and also happens to be a vampire, who draws his strength and invincibility from women’s orgasms, seeking vengeance against the master vampire who murdered his family, burned his ranch homestead to the ground, and turned him into a blood-and-orgasm-thirsty immortal.
Cody has a strict pleasure’em and leave’em, no strings attached policy, especially since all he cares about in his endless life is winning one more champion title belt and exacting his revenge, now that he’s finally tracked his family’s killer to the small Texas town of Skull Creek. On his way there, his path of retribution takes a slight detour when he meets sweet, innocent, passionate Miranda Rivers in an Austin bar, who’s looking to sow some wild oats and experience her very first man-induced orgasm, before tying the knot and succumbing to a life of boredom.
Although Miranda has a strict no cowboys rule, she decides that a wild, wanton, one time only tryst with the stud is exactly what she needs to get her long buried, dormant lust completely out of her system, for good. After one taste of Miranda, love’em and leave’em Cody can’t stop craving more, and suddenly she’s having second thoughts about her cowboys off limits code. But Cody is hell-bent set on vengeance and refuses to let a woman sidetrack him, no matter how much she stirs his lust or warms his cold heart. Can Miranda convince Cody that they belong together, forever?
Cody is the first book in a new Braddock Brothers off-shoot of Raye’s Love at First Bite Blaze series, and some of those characters make appearances in this. If this story is any indication of the fun and heat factor of the previous books, then you can bet I’ll be picking them up, and very soon! It’s an entertaining, super fun, smokin’ hot quickie read with a sexy vampire, cowboy stud and a great way to fantasize away a few hours. In fact, it’s my top favorite Harlequin Blaze read so far! 4 ½ stars!
Opening Line; "He hadn't had sex in forty-eight hours. While two days of deprivation was nothing for most men, Cody Braddock wasn't the average guy."
I’ve really been enjoying Kimberly Raye's sexy and hilarious Love At First Bite series. Set in Skull Creek Texas (where I’m seriously considering moving) These quickie romances follow the love connections of several of the towns eligible women as they get their groove on and find true love with gorgeous cowboys who (oh yeah) also just happen to be vampires. Cowboy vampires who feed off sexual energy that is. Hmmm, now there’s an interesting concept.
Here we get Cody Braddock as our stud muffin. He’s a champion bull rider, so that piqued my interest even though he never actually rides a bull here. Anyways sexy vamp is seeking the one who turned him and murdered his family back during the civil war. Cody plans to kill his sire as an act of revenge but also to gain back his mortality. To have the strength required to destroy his nemesis though, Jake is going to need his batteries fully charged and since he feeds off sexual energy that’s where his little stop at a crowded bar in Austin Texas comes in.
Miranda Rivers has done everything possible not to be like her wild and wanton mama and sisters, even going so far as to except an e-mailed marriage proposal from her boring but dependable boyfriend who owns the town dry cleaners. Nobody will ever gossip about her again. But before she settles… down that is, Miranda wants one night of no strings attached, pure orgasmic sex. She’s looking for the big O and she may have just found him.
What our couple hadn’t counted on from this one night stand was an instant connection. Cody’s body hasn’t had “that” reaction to a woman in over 100 years and Miranda seems to be able to sense and feel his emotions. When Cody’s hunt for his maker takes him to Skull Creek choppers and back to Miranda and because one night wasn’t enough for either of them they decide to put a dent in the “Randy’s hottest sex spots” list. They’ll have one week to do it behind the bleachers at the football stadium, at the gazebo in the town square, the history section of the library etc. Then Cody’s either getting killed or leaving and Miranda’s going to marry boring ole what’s-his-name. Right?
I should mention that while I loved the first two books Dead Sexy and Drop Dead Gorgeous these more recent instalments just seem to more of the same, with slight tweaks to an almost identical story. In fact in going over my old reviews I realized that if you’ve read the first book then you’ve already read this story. Cheers people.
This review is for the audio book version as sold by Audible.
Of course, I'm listening to these out of order, but fortunately it doesn't make that much of a difference to when it comes to enjoyability.
Cody has been a vampire since the end of the Civil war. In one night he lost his humanity, his mother, sister in law, and nephew (or niece - I admit I can't recall which one it was there). But his chance to kill the vampire responsible, and regain his humanity, is waiting for him in Skull Creek, Texas. All he has to do is kill the one who made him. Kill him and it all ends.
But a chance meeting with Miranda Rivers, a woman who has done everything she can to be exactly the opposite of her sisters and mother, throws a spanner in the works. Miranda wants one night of wildness, to put an end to her fantasy of cowboys before she settles down with the 'right' man. That calm, reliable, respectable man who has asked her to marry him. Exactly the opposite of the men her mother picked, and the men her sisters still pick.
One night that Cody is happy to give her.
One small problem. Miranda isn't the type he can forget, especially when it turns out she lives in Skull Creek, and he's going to have to wait five days before his target turns up.
I love the premise and the idea of these vampires who live off not just blood, but sexual energy. The only thing that spoiled this for me was the narrator. He was great at the male voices, but his attempts at female voices were - to be honest - painful!
This one had a vampire. A cowboy vampire. A professional bull-riding, ex-Civil War confederate cowboy vampire. For all the vampire-ness it had, he might as well not have been a vampire. His vampireness didn't really play into the story, except that he could feed by sex as well as blood, so he NEEDED to have sex regularly. The hero has a one-night stand with the heroine, rescues her from a bad vampire, and has to feed her some of his blood, so there's a link between them. Then, surprise! He has to go to her hometown to get his revenge on the vampire who turned him and murdered his whole family, except for his brothers who got made vampires too. So they're having a yen for each other--hero & heroine, I mean. She's trying to live down a trampy family rep, but she's just as lusty as her mom and sister, she just wants to get it out of her system with the hero & settle down.
This story was pretty much your basic Harlequin Blaze with a little vampireness slathered over the top. I wasn't sure why she bothered, but it was a decent read. I read all of it, after all.
Cody and Miranda grabbed me right from the start. The two shared similar backgrounds which created a bond, a connection between them. And when Cody bit Miranda (He's a vampire), it only grew stronger. Cody is on a quest to find and stake the vampire who brutally killed his family and turned him and his remaining two brothers into creatures of the night. Along the way he meets Miranda who has her own demons to contend with. As she sets out to have wild, passionate sex with a stranger before she settles down to the boring, uneventful life she thinks she wants, she crosses paths with Cody, the sexy, vampire. What follows are hot, steamy love scenes culminating in a forever and after love affair. This is a great read, a definite keeper.
I got this book for free so was a little dubious to begin with. I did really like the story but there wasn't reall much to it. I then discovered that there are three books that come before this one. And the three main characters from them books all made an appearance in this book. So I'd imagine that reading them as well will be a good idea. This story finishes with Brent going off to find their brothers wife (Rose) who they believed to be dead, but have discovered that she also was turned into a vampire. This is a good love story, not too long, some really great.. should I say 'adult" scenes lol Also considering it was free, can't really complian at all. Give it a go!
This is my first foray into romance with a paranormal edge and I have to admit I loved this book from beginning to end. I couldnt put it down. The pace is breath-taking and Cody is so dark and sexy. I'm now a fan of Kimberly Raye and off to buy more of her books.
Having been 'turned ' over a century before, Cody, the bull riding, hot, cowboy vamp wants his revenge on the one who destroyed his family. Feeding off blood and sex he bar crawls to find his next meal. Enter, Miranda, the good girl, the hard worker, the sweet, tender, play it safe girl. Unlike her sisters and late mother she's set on marrying ' Mr Safe and Boring' until her path crosses with the sexy stranger. A good read, plenty of sex scenes and found it free.
Meyer gives us sparkling vampires. Raye gives us vamps with built-in color changing eyes - with random magical abilities.
I don't think there was much of a plot to this story. Miranda and Cody have a one-night stand, and though they seem to meet infrequently, thanks to their shared blood (and connection), they can't help thinking about each other - and subsequently, to fall in love. Cody seemed like a decent guy. He is supposedly a hardcore vampire cowboy, but aside from his thoughts of getting a thrill bull-riding, the reader doesn't get a sense that he is a real cowboy. Instead, the reader is often told by Miranda that Cody is a cowboy. As for Cody's vampirism, that also does not seem to be a distinct part of what Cody is. I have my own problems with the author's portrayal of vampires; namely, their magical abilities. For example, Cody's telepathic abilities seem to have inconsistently applied rules, but I wasn't reading very carefully so I might be wrong. The whole "vampire" aspect seemed a bit silly, to be honest. I found myself rolling my eyes with each mention of purple or silver eyes, and self-levitation. But then again, I have long been tired of reading vampire romances, and have only done so to get this book out of my TBR pile. Miranda, due to her family background, seemed obsessed with s**. She has a list of where she would like to have it. That's pretty much all she thinks about - that, Cody, and feeling sorry for herself because of how she grew up and what people think of her. She wasn't my favorite character.
What was most interesting about this whole book was probably the heat factor. It was really hot. Miranda and Cody's first encounter was probably the best. They only met up one other time, but it paled in comparison. Yet, despite their few encounters, they decide that they love each other. Do you get the sense that I didn't believe that they fell in love? That's because I didn't. It didn't seem believable. I didn't get the sense of a love-at-first-sight nor that after a couple of mind-blowing encounters, they somehow knew enough about each other to fall in love.
The dialogue seemed a bit stiff and unnatural. It seemed unbelievable to me that either character would spill so much personal information when they barely knew each other.
However, this wasn't so very bad. It has held my interest long enough to get me to finish it. Also, when Cody and I met Garret's friend, my interest was piqued. I wanted to read his story to see what Garret was like. After all, everyone knows that bad guys do not have friends so I knew that Garret must be a good and interesting guy.
More of a 2.5 because...I would like to say I am totally over the heroine who has only had sexual encounters with 3 men, all of whom apparently were incapable of finding a single erogenous zone. At some point, it occurs to me that in this podunk town, if all the men were that incompetent, the population would be zero. Thus, it has to be that the women all have some hangup somewhere that keep them from, oh I dunno… experiencing even a little bit of interest. That being the case, it seems to me that they wouldn't know an orgasm if it bit them in the ass. Easy pickings for a vampire who feeds off sexual pleasure.
It's kinda…yeah. How about a heroine who has had a good relationship in the past, huh?
Cody…is essentially a hothead. Not a very bright hothead either, since he's a bull rider and has been a bull rider for 15 years, yet hasn't aged a day. Emmm… right. And he's suddenly concerned because a reporter noticed? If dummy had bothered to look in a mirror once in a while, he would have realized that he needed to find a new hobby *before* the encounter.
As for the h, well. I guess having a mom with loose morals is an issue, as is having two half sisters with the same problem. But, she could have moved. She admitted as much. Also admitted the only reason she didn't was because she had two sisters living nearby (that she avoided like the plague). Yah. Ok. So far this series has pretty much illustrated why I would not want to live in a town small enough that everyone knew everyone. There's some comfort in anonymity. A previous heroine's inability to gain male attention because they still saw her as a tomboy (when she's wearing mini skirts, stilettos and tank tops? What?!), now this.
The Braddock Boys: Cody, by Kimberly Raye is published by Mills & Boon Blaze - steamier than the usual Mills & Boon!
To start with, I wasn't sure I was going to really enjoy this story of a sexy vampire, Cody Braddock, "turned" after the American Civil War and searching through time for the vamp that he believed killed his family. When I read the line "He'd had no sex for 48 hours", my first thought was "Aw, diddums!" But then I realised that Cody fed on sex for energy. Where he got blood from to feed on, however, was not made clear by the story and I did wonder. I also found, at first, the heroine and love-interest Miranda's discarding of lovers in her search for an orgasm rather immature.
However, I did warm to the story as it progressed. The sex scenes were certainly sizzling, and the way Miranda and Cody came to care for one another was heart-warming and satisfying. The back-story of the protagonists unfolded as the story went on and explained their behaviour and I found myself feeling more sympathetic towards them both.
This is the first book in the series, and without wishing to give too much of the plot away, it ended on an intriguing enough cliff-hanger for me to want to read the others in the series.
Full review to come. I am so back logged on reviews, but lately I have just wanted to read, read, read and not be bothered with reviewing. So, I imagine I will get back to it eventually, But for now I’m going to read another book instead.
Read this before GR era, so I rated this just by what I feel after I finish read. This is a quick read and the story is pretty simple. Also the book should have categorized into Nocturne imprint back then in 2010, but got included into Blaze imprint. Maybe because the story is scorching hot? Nah, I don't remember that much.
Cody strong dark brooding unattainable vampire. Miranda quiet insecure hiding behind her safe life. Just one fling, she needed just one act of wildness - this act bought them together. Give the book a chance the first chapter was coming back from the war & initially I wasn't sure I would enjoy but it's a good story, hot but not steamy. Interesting twist to lead on in the series.
Sexy vampire cowboy + soon-to-be married woman stuck with a dull fiancee in a dull life. She's determined to live a little before she settles down for something safe and practical, and he's exactly the man to meet her needs.
A tried and tested paranormal romance plot which resulted in a pleasant if not exactly nail-biting read. However, it was badly let down by the ending which was bland and uneventful. It completely missed the opportunity for a huge finale which could have given the characters a much happier ending.
I love this book.I love Kimberly Raye's vampires from Skull Creek series.Cody is a very sexy vampire.I love the story. It is sexy and romantic and it is awesome.I highly recommend this book to everyone. You will love it!
I'm not a big fan of the vampire love thing though my experience with Edward and Bella was more than good. I tried to have a second encounter with a vampire and this sex machine guy is amazing :) This was a very good read and I loked the book very much
Like the cowboy-vampire thing, but besides the sex..Don't see how this couple would have much of a relationship beyond mutual lust. But...It is a Blaze book..so I guess I shouldn't expect more! LOL
