“Shards” is a collection of short fiction Smith wrote around 2005. At the time he was very interested in Flash Fiction - stories of 1,000 words or less. As a computer programmer he attempts to find the most economical way to express an algorithm. This skill has leached into his writing. You will see how he finds the simplest way to express an idea. Other writings are longer attempts at short stories.
