About the author

John Gough Nichols (22 May, 1806–14 Nov, 1873) was an English scholar, painter and antiquary, and the third generation in a family publishing business.

John Gough was the eldest son of John Bowyer Nichols, printer & antiquary, and grandson of the publishing business founder, John Nichols.

John Gough Nichols helping to found the Royal Archæological Institute (1844), the London and Middlesex Archæological Society (1855) and contributed to the work of the Numismatic Society, Surrey Archæological Society & the Shakespeare Society.
