You might have read Marvel Comics, and the chances are really high that you've seen Marvel adaptations on the big or the small screen - now get ready for the written version! Follow me into the narrative version of the Marvel universe.

******************************
Read the interview with Maria Lewis!
******************************

This time, we're following Bobbi Morse, as part of a Marvel heroines novel. I've never read a comic starring Bobbi (or Mockingbird, as her hero alter ego is called), but I've seen her in »Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.« (AOS for short), played by the wonderful Adrienne Palicki, so I immediately knew she was a badass hero. I was kind of surprised, though, to learn that this novel is actually the 8th installment in the Marvel heroines series. Every book follows another heroine, and none of them are what you would call a "mayor player" in the Marvel Universe. They include Dominion, Rogue, Squirrel Girl - and now Mockingbird.

Cue badass entry scene for Mockingbird.

So the real question here is: can this work? Every other Marvel medium was highly visual, either the graphic novels or the movies and series. We know from the MCU that the screen writers are able to catch their audience (although the movie plots are starting to get really repetitive, and you can see that they are recycling a lot of tropes forever and ever). But the series have been different, more creative in my opinion - including AOS. And that gave me hope, because here we are with one of the agents, and the fact this novel centers around one of the lesser known heroines is a strong point, in my opinion. Because if I had to write a story for a Marvel hero, I would hate that be one of the stars. Everyone knows them, and everyone has an idea about how that hero should work. Using one of the lesser known heroes gives you more leeway to make the character interesting.

Although there are differences between the Bobbi you might know from AOS and the one in this novel. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Clint »Hawkeye« Barton has a family and maybe a hint of a romantic connection to Black Widow. I'm the comics universe - which this novel is connected to - he's the former husband of Mockingbird. The novel actually starts with their divorce negotiations. Fun facts: Her lawyer is She-Hulk, while Clint got Daredevil. Kind of makes you wish that they would hash it out in the arena.

I wouldn't want to fight Mockingbird over custody!

Back to topic, then. Like I said, using Mockingbird gave Maria Lewis the chance to define the character her way, especially as she caught Bobbi at a transitional point in her life, going through divorce. I'm my humble opinion, she rose to that challenge! And since Bobbi is something like a regular human (with a wee drop of super soldier serum in her, but far from Captain levels), she's a wonderful main character, one the reader can identify with. Her inner monologue is represented well.

So, what about the story? It's less superhero, more spy work, but we're still talking about Marvel here. That means suspension of disbelief is necessary as our first person narrator navigates her way through some shenanigans to find and save her missing mentor. She even has a knight on a horse to help her! (Okay, agent Lancelot is riding a Ducati, but at least he has a very knightly name.) If you're really into spy thrillers, you might end up a tad disappointed - were not talking about authentic spycraft here, rather the one with so many gadgets, even James Bond would be jealous. If you want the other kind, read some John Le Carré.

You might have fancy gadgets, but you'll never have shades as good looking as these!

But you probably knew that beforehand, because it IS a Marvel novel and S.H.I.E.L.D. isn't known for low tech equipment, after all. With regards to these parameters, it's excellent entertainment! Don't focus on the details, just go with the flow, and you'll have yourself a great old time, batting bad boys beside Bobbi.

The mandatory thriller twist is there, but to be honest, it kind of underwhelmed me. First of all, the true villain behind the kidnapping was teased multiple times, and for any thriller aficionado, it was kind of expected, a classic genre trope. It works, just not with a bam.

*****

I'll give this 4 stars. Solid entertaining, fast paced, with enough humour to lighten up the action. I think the tie-in to the Marvel universe (with the divorce going on) burdened the story a little bit (it would have been more fun as a stand alone without having to integrate some metaplot), but Marie was able to keep up the pace nonetheless. And it was fun to see the inside thoughts of Mockingbird up close!

Firstly I’d like to thank NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book. As a fan of agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Marvel in general I was so excited to read this. I was not disappointed! I loved the dynamic of Bobbi and Lance in the show and getting to read about how they met and learn more about Bobbi was so cool! I could not put this book down! It felt like watching a marvel movie! This book has a bit of everything just like a marvel movie. Action, comedy, romance… with a few of my favourite “spy” tropes and some recognizable side characters and name drops. I LOVED this book

"you were always great on your own, bobbi. it's time you remember that."

I picked this up through Love Book Tours, with thanks to Maria Lewis, Aconyte Books, and Simon & Schuster

bobbi morse is going through a divorce. so when an opportunity arises to escape for a little bit and go back to her roots, searching for missing ex-shield scientist, ex-mentor. she wasn't expecting to want to work with lance hunter, british intelligence counterpart to shield. but when someone is trying to replicate the original super soldier serum, bobbi must visit her past to prevent a catastrophic future.

rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

my thoughts: as a marvel fan, and a massive aos fan where bobbi morse and lance hunter were the best characters played by the best actors, as soon as i got the chance to read this i jumped at it. ive not read any of the comics before, didn't know any of her storylines other than what i knew from aos, that she is a complete badass.

having this open with bobbis divorce to hawkeye, she-hulk and daredevil - wow what away to integrate its into what we know of the marvel universe and current releases (although aren't there any other lawyers in the marvel universe?)

i loved the setting and being in the uk, made a difference to everything always being based in america! i wasn't too keen on the final part of the book, i know that marvel is so far fetched but after the first part of the book, it felt out of place.

not sure if i would pick up any of the others in the series, but it was good to see a lesser-known female character get the limelight for once.

I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Mockingbird: Strike Out because I love Mockingbird. She’s tough, sarcastic, smart, and way too good for Hawkeye. The story begins with no bigger shock as Mockingbird is in the midst of her divorce proceedings with Hawkeye ( need I say it again who is not good enough for her). Working with her ex seems like a bad ideal so Mockingbird is planning to go back East after completing one last off the books mission. Her former professor/mentor that she helped take down for trying to recreate the super soldier serum is missing. Now it’s up to Mockingbird and her sexy, British counterpart to risk life and limb to find the professor and whatever sinister scheme is under way. Fun, humorous, and action packed, Mockingbird: Strike Out is everything this fan could hope for. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from NetGalley.

Review

There are two things I need to get out in the open at the start of this review, first Tigra is here so it was instant love for me and second I didn’t know as much about Bobbi Morse as I probably should going into this one but when I came out I certainly did!

Mockingbird Strike Out is the latest instalment in the Aconyte Marvel Heroines line that have seen entries such as Elsa Bloodstone, Outlaw and Rogue. A good espionage and action packed thriller we get an depth look into the heroine S.H.I.E.L.D agent and join her on an action packed adventure to help save the world.

Bobbi Morse needs a break from LA and to escape from her awkward and painful divorce from Hawkeye that is still being sorted out. What she needed was a job and lucky for her an old friend and mentor is missing. Bobbi takes the case and goes to the UK in search of answers. What she didn’t expect or want was to have to team up with the snarky and handsome Lance Hunter. With limited options she has no choice. Someone, once again, is trying to recreate and weaponise the Super-Soldier Serum which could easily lead to a global disaster. Bobbi will have to learn to trust, face her past, put currently problems behind her and let the Mockingbird fly free if she wants to save the world.

Okay, so I already mentioned that Tigra was here and that was an instant love for me but what I didn’t expect was the end up liking a character I confess I didn’t know much about and who is a S.H.I.E.L.D agent to boot! Maria Lewis brings Bobbi Morse right out of the comic books, onto the prose page and to straight to life. Bobbi is grounded, despite being a super hero, she is funny, snarky, smart and best of all so human it was almost like having a friend tell you about their insane super hero adventure!

I am not one for a lot of romance in my action books but can I just say that Lewis’ way of portraying the build up to and the final ‘relationship’ of Lance and Bobbi was something I can’t remember enjoying so much for a long time. The is banter, jokes, nods to English pop culture, action – you name it their relationship probably has it. I also enjoyed the way it humanised Bobbi more. Still hurting from her divorce with Clint Barton, Lewis captures all those insecurities which was great to see in someone who is basically super human.

As with most, if not all, of the marvel prose novels put out there by Aconyte and their talented authors the transition from comic book and screen is executed perfectly. Can comic book characters and storylines work in prose? You bet they can and these series show it! You have all the vivid action, all the adventure and it still works perfectly. If anything it might be a little better because you get the added bonus of having a more in depth character study of the super heroes. As someone who loves character driven stories and character development I adore that about this.

Lewis clearly KNOWS Mockingbird and it shows. Honestly I couldn’t really find a flaw, maybe not even Tigra but that is just me being biased! If you love action packed espionage thrillers you’ll love this. If you love marvel heroines and heroes you’ll love this.

This was a NetGalley freebie in return for an honest review.

I've read Maria Lewis's debut novel, 'Who's Afraid?' and found it had a very distinctive voice. Strike Back is much the same, lots of quirky banter and interesting characters. It didn't 100% work for me but I definitely recommend it to fans of Lewis's writing.

The in-jokes and references had me Googling a lot of the time and Bobbi's flirtation with TV character Lance Hunter did nothing for me. What I did appreciate is, like all of Aconyte's other Marvel novels, a strong sense of continuity. Always love that these books are willing to take a deep dive and link up with specific points in Marvel continuity. While I was confused about Tigra's reference to her "starter husband" (I'm pretty sure he was shot on duty, not divorced), I loved every time that Tigra or She-Hulk turned up - though the old comics joke of there only being two lawyers in the Marvel U continues with Matt Murdock and Jennifer Walters facing off yet again. Feels like there's room for another and maybe one that specialises in divorce law?

Overall, a fun action romp but very much a Maria Lewis novel featuring Marvel characters rather than the opposite.

Thank you to Love Books Tours, Maria Lewis and Aconyte Books for having me on this blog tour and sending me a copy of the book to read. I'm a Marvel fan and was sold on wanting to read this book because I didn't know Hawkeye had an ex-wife ( I've watched the films but until now hadn't ventured into reading Marvel), so I just needed to know about her!
Chapter one is so fast-paced and full of so much stuff happening and I loved it, the first chapter cemented my absolutely loving Bobbi and actually hating Clint (he comes over as such an arsehole) which threw me because having only watched the films I really liked him in those.
It's Marvel so you'd expect plenty of action and you get it in spades, ill be honest I didn't want to stop reading this, I got so engrossed I almost missed picking my small one up from school(I didn't but it was close id got to a really good bit!).
The interactions between Bobbi and Lance were just brilliantly written and I loved every single bit of banter, Tem is just Fabulous!
I did see one the surprise twists coming a few chapters before it was revealed but I think that just because I watch too many crime dramas and the choice of wording alerted me to something being amiss. But the other one surprised me!
I have to say one of my favourite bits of the book, hands down has to be Bobbi's last interaction with Clint it was beautiful *chef's kiss*.
I've already ordered more Marvel heroines books from my library because this was so damn good. If you're even remotely a fan of Marvel you should give this a read( heck even if you are just a fan of kick-ass women you should give this a read)

Mockingbird: Strike Out by Maria Lewis is the latest in the Marvel Heroines series. Aconyte Books provided an early galley prior to the June 6, 2023, release date in exchange for an honest review.

The cover by Anna Astrid of this novel perfectly portrays the heroine. My first exposure to Mockingbird (Bobbi Morse) was from the 1983 four-part Hawkeye mini-series. She became an instant favorite with her superior fighting skills and no-nonsense attitude. She was the perfect partner to the cocky, self-assured archer. While I hated to see this couple break up (which is how we find them as the novel opens), that allowed the character to grow on her own and not be tied perpetually to the "Hawkeye and..." label.

I found myself reading the narration in the voice of Adrianne Palicki, the actress who played Bobbi Morse for several seasons on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. I enjoyed the cameos of other Marvel characters; Lewis has a good grasp of the much-loved Marvel continuity and uses it to support her tale. Also, as a music person, I appreciated the author interjecting many references to 80's British new-wave and alternative acts.

The only minor quibble I have with the story is how soon Bobbi finds herself falling for another man. I get that her marriage was a major weight and the impending-divorce was a release, but I was disappointed that she so quickly rebounded to another man. It cheapened her characterization for me. If it had stopped at just flirting or with her rebuffing his flirtations, I think the narrative still would have worked.

Aconyte's Marvel Heroines line continues with a spy novel about Mockingbird. Instead of following the comic continuity, this one is an amalgam of the comics and Agents of SHIELD. Mockingbird has just divorced Hawkeye and returns to SHIELD for a mission in Oxford, England. A scientist she worked with early on at SHIELD has gone missing while working as a professor at Oxford. She meets Lance Hunter from Agents of SHIELD. (He's also a character in old Captain Britain comics.) While tracking down this scientist, she starts up a rebound relationship with Hunter. (On the TV show, the two were divorced.) This is a straight up spy story without any superheroics even though She-Hulk and Tigra are minor characters. There are also some liberties taken with the character Ted Sallis becomes. . The novel itself is fine although I have read better from Aconyte as most of these novels are really good.

I have to admit that I am a HUGE Marvel fan! I blame my son ....but he definitely has great taste!
So, obviously I jumped at the chance to read this and wow! I'm so glad I did because it was absolutely brilliant!

I've not read anything Marvel before, just watched all the films and series spin offs - I think I'm up to date - so this was also a great chance to see how the film characters and plots translated for me onto the page.

We open with a bit of a shock - who knew that Bobbi and Clint were getting divorced (no spoilers as it's literally the first page!)
But I immediately felt at home again with familiar characters who we already all love!

The writing was in style with the drama and humour that we all see and love in the Marvel films so it was extremely easy to read through. It was also really fast paced, packed with action and adventure right through to the end. There was even a splash of romance thrown in.

Although the superheroes are fabulous - I loved the contrast here with Mockingbird being skilled in her field and solving the issues using technology rather than super powers. True to the S.H.I.E.L.D style that we recognise.

This is the first Marvel book (or comic) that I've read - being introduced through the films - but I loved this and I'm really keen to read more in this series.

Bobbi Morse is in the middle of her divorce to Clint Barton, or as she describes, everyone’s least favourite Avenger. As if that chapter of her life closing isn’t enough, she’s also closing out her time as a West Coast Avenger. Sensing she needs a distraction, Maria Hill sends her on a “vacation” (read undercover mission) to Oxford to locate her former, now disgraced, mentor who has gone missing. When she gets there, she soon finds nothing is as it seems and Bobbi has to make the decision either to work alone or trust the cocky, charming British agent also on the case, Lance ✨

I love these novels, I’ve previously read some of the X-Men ones and I was so excited to jump into this.

Admittedly, Bobbi isn’t a character I knew a lot about before this book. I knew she had been married to Clint and was a genius but further than that my knowledge was limited. After this book I 100% want to get into her arcs more!

I loved the side characters in this read, especially seeing Jen, Maria and Matt! Lance’s development in this book was also fantastic, he was such a dynamic character and I loved seeing him and Bobbi’s interactions 🫧 this book was such a pleasure to read!

Thanks to NetGalley for providing a review copy of this book in exchange for a fair review.

The latest instalment in the Marvel Heroines prose novel series, Mockingbird: Strike Out reunites fan favourite characters Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter from the Agents of SHIELD TV show in their first adventure together in the UK.

Being familiar with Bobbi and Lance from comics and TV, this book was a fun ride that cherry picked interesting elements from Marvel canon to mix through, without descending into an easter egg slog. Adriana Palicki and Nick Blood from AoS would be right to demand royalties from this book, given how their voices come across in the dialogue in a major boost to the story's main relationship.

The mystery itself is only a little convoluted but this felt a bit more polished than several other Marvel prose novels I've read so I'm excited to see what Maria Lewis does next in this space.

I have never read a Marvel comic, but I have long since been a fan of the Marvel movies, so I was excited to get the opportunity to read a Marvel book. I mean, I like Marvel and I love reading, so what could go wrong?…Nothing! That’s what! I loved this book, can you tell yet?!
Mockingbird is an extremely intelligent, strong and totally badass lead character. I knew nothing about her before reading this book, which I quite liked as it meant I was forming my opinions and impressions solely based on the book, and I’m totally fan girling for her now.
I really enjoyed the interaction between her and Lance when they work together to try to find Mockingbird’s former professor and mentor, who has gone missing and may be trying to weaponise the Super Soldier Serum that created Captain America.

I don’t want to give anything away to spoil it for other readers, but what I can say is that the writing is great, the pace kept me hooked and not wanting to put it down the whole way through.

If you’re a Marvel fan, a superhero fan or just a fan of badass female lead characters then you should definitely get this book, you will love it!

My thanks to the author, the publisher and to LoveBooksTours for gifting me this book. I am leaving this review of my own volition.

When Marvel's Most Wanted got cancelled before the series' first season was filmed, /I was very upset. Bobbi and Hunter are two very important characters in the Marvel Universe. If the show had finished production and went to air, this book is the plot I hoped it would follow. It ties up the Hawkeye/Laura story well and transfers Bobbi to Hunter, as portrayed in Agents Of SHIEILD. Their respective Charters, Mockingbird and Lance Hunter lasted only a season and a half and there was way more story to tell. In the MCU, this book could've been the whole first season of Marvel's Most Wanted. It would fit perfectly as a prequel series to Agents of SHEILD, but Marvel has gone in a completely different direction. Bobbi is such a relatable character and is me save for the height and the blond hair. The reason this book is so important to the Marvel Universe is because even as a team, neither Bobbi nor Hunter have superpowers. Just a lot of close combat training, weapons specialties, college degrees and street smarts. These two make an amazing team and there should be more adventures and sequels to this book, especially since the Marvel Cinematic Universe refuses to give Bobbi the spotlight she deserves.

Thank you to NetGalley, Maria Lewis, Marvel, and Aconyte Books for allowing me to read an advanced copy of Mockingbird: Strike Out in exchange for an honest review.

I was browsing through NetGalley looking for my next request and came across this stunner of a cover. I started reading graphic novels and comic books a few years ago. I've known about Mockingbird, but I didn't really know her know her. Ya know?

Anywho, this was a fun read. I only wish Tigra was featured more in the story. She was written with such sass. It was great. The character of Bobbi/Mockingbird was developed well. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about her through print and not just an image.

Thank you to Aconyte Books and NetGalley for the ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review. As I read this, the characters were playing out as their MCU counterparts, if they existed, and it was fantastic. Everything was very true to the character of Bobbi Morse and did not require other Marvel characters but used them well. The Marvel Heroines books are very well written and put the spotlight on those who may be ignored in the larger context of comics. I could not wait to read more in this book when I had to stop for silly things like sleep. If you like comics, bad-ass heroines and a compelling mystery, check this out.

This book was more detailed than I was expecting, which was great for immersing me into the exciting, fast-paced world of superheroes and super-spies 🤓 We follow Bobbi Morse, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D, big time promoter of ladies in S.T.E.M., and soon-to-be divorcee of some guy that everyone knows 🏹

I loved the S.T.E.M representation so it was great having Bobbi take the focus away from the powered people stuff and show that we can all be super in our individual and unique ways when we have the drive.

There was a little bit of 🔥 in a bit of will-they wont-they, which I wasn't adverse to and welcomed. Yaassss Bobbi 👏🏻

Plenty of action in the pages so the pace barely ever dropped, keeping me wanting more. There were also cameos and tidbits of Marvel lore which, although I've not read the comics but am an avid MCU fan, I was able to keep up with and my little dorky heart was content.

I am a huge fan of all things S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel, graphic novel and superhero. I love the journey, the epic battles of good and evil and the science packed in to the stories as well. This book is a brilliant addition to that collection of brilliance. The main character is one of strength, nerve and skill. They use everything they have got to fight against what they believe is wrong and the author throws us lots of science and knowledgable facts within the pages. I loved every moment.
The world-building was excellent and really brought the fights to life. The author also gave us exceptional character depth and development to create a very well rounded central character, for us to base the book. Around that, we are given substantial backing characters and foes to really bulk the story.
The pace and flow match the style of story perfectly. They have recognised moments of upped pace to match any power struggles and slower moments to really build a base and reality from, which I liked a lot. Overall, an absolutely brilliant book!

All my kids love Marvel, so when I was asked to review this book I was only to happy, Thought it was a good way of learning about some of the characters they go on about. This is Book 8 in "Marvel Heroines" but my first. Agent Bobbi Morse is going through a divorce from Hawkeye and needs some space and get away. Bobbi's former mentor/professor has gone missing and this is just what she needs to get away from everything. Bobbi is teamed up with Lance Hunter, we learn about how they met which I liked. I did think that Bobbi and Lance made a great team. Bobbi will stop at nothing to find out what is going n and bring her ex mentor to safety. The book is full of action, but also there is a bitt fun along the way. I have to say I did read it in one sitting and can see why my kids love it. I will now be looking for the other books in the series. Anyone that is a fan, needs to read this .

This was such a fun read with my kids. They absolutely loved it and were so engaged with me reading it that they wanted at least 4 chapters a night. They were so invested in the story and what was happening.

My kids love Marvel, and they loved this book. We just loved reading it together. It's hard to get them to listen to something they like, and this one hit the nail on the head.

The only annoyance I had going on for me with this book was the romance, and I found myself reading ahead to gather what was going on and sometimes just skipping altogether. I totally felt like it wasn't needed.

Overall, it was an enjoyable read.

I really liked this book, it was a very enjoyable and well paced read. It was full of a mix of action, thriller, suspense and romance.

I love the cover of this book and it was one of the first things that drew me in. I was also drawn to it as it was marvel.

I really liked the characters and relationships throughout. I loved the friendship between Bobbi, Tigra and Jen. I also really liked the character Lance and the relationship and partnership he formed with Bobbi.

Overall this was a great read and it has a mix of things that make it a book that many will get enjoyment from.

I was drawn to this book as I’m MCU fan, and I loved the cover too it’s so striking! The book didn’t disappoint it was an action packed and fun read.

I like Bobbi she’s a badass and smart too. I liked Lance too, they made a great team. The story was a good mix of mystery with some romance.

This book is the eighth book in the Marvel Heroines series, so I will be definitely reading the others in this series too.

I really like the author’s style of writing. I was totally immersed in Mockingbird.

Thank you to Love Book Tours and the publisher for having me on the tour and for my gifted ebook.

I have been so excited to read and review this Marvel Heroines novel and I had high expectations going in. Thankfully, this novel lives up to my high expectations. Mockingbird is well written and it’s so good to see the Marvel heroines have a chance to shine.

I love Maria Lewis’ writing style, she writes Bobbi as a confident, bada** character who is also funny and I especially liked all the banter. Reading this book has made me want to read more novels in the Marvel Heroines series.

I received a gifted copy of this novel. This review is my honest opinion and written voluntarily.

Wow, I was expecting this to perhaps be a little juvenile. A story based on a comic book for teens to enjoy. I couldn't have been more wrong!
I really love the Marvel Universe, and so this series around some of the Marvel heroines is definitely going to be one I dive thoroughly into.
The storyline is fast-paced and action-packed throughout.
I love all the characters but especially the friendship between Jen, Tigra, and Bobbi.
A good mix of action, thriller, and romance to really keep fans of most genres happy.
It was a really great read that I finished in 24 hours!

What do I have to do to get more Bobbi and Hunter content? This was great and exciting and silly.
Makes me miss the two from Agents of SHIELD. Why they didn’t get their spinoff is still unknown to me because this was amazing.

And yes I couldn’t help but see Bobbi as Adrienne Palicki and Hunter as Nick Blood.

So l'm a huge fan of the Marvel movies and I was so excited when this book became available to sign up for I jumped on it and I'm so so glad that I did. Wow. I legit went into this book knowing nothing about it or Mockingbird and I'm so glad for that cause I got to form my own opinions and thoughts and yeahhhh. This was a fast paced well written book. I hope more is to come. I don't want to give anything away on accident. Eeek. So go read y’all !!!

Action packed read with all the favourite Marvel references!

This was right up my street, action cross superhero and one I could get behind as I’ve seen a lot of the Marvel films!

I enjoyed the chemistry between the characters Bobbi and Lance as I often find female superheroes are forced into the background and secondary to male superheroes.

I liked that you were kept guessing about what had happened to Dr Calvin right up till the end almost, it kept an element of suspense going.

This paperback edition is 336 pages and full of the trademark Marvel excitement, fun and peril. It's nice to see Mockingbird get her own book.. even if she is in the midst of a divorce. It's always great to see a strong female character kick ass, this is a step up from what I was expecting... Whilst there is romance it doesn't happen straight off. This is primarily a spy/mystery lots of clues and red herrings dangling throughout along with the odd superhero cameo and Easter egg.
