Mini-Sized Psychological Thriller
Title: The Girl in the Green Shoes

It really is surprising how much better most graded readers for adults are than the primers for children learning to read their native language. I would rather have read Curious George any day of the week, rather than Fun With Dick and Jane when I was a child. But, the fact of the matter is there was very little difference between the content of the two, except that Curious George was curious and got into more trouble than the 'good little children' who taught us to read. We knew enough to know we liked to see the monkey break the rules.

Here we have shoes... green shoes... a jacket with gold buttons... style... a tangled love affair... and a dead girl. Not quite a telenovela, but readable. There's more in the only 41 pages of text. The plot gets into some psychoanalysis of the killer's motives that leave the reader a bit surprised in the end. But, the text is quite readable, with less than 700 vocabulary used. I'm including a typical quote for comparison, but the one paragraph that was a bit difficult was the 'confession' of the killer. So, I can't include that. But, everything else was on my level. I did learn a number of new ways to turn a phrase, and some new vocabulary.

"Laura baja del taxi. No entiende por qué Julio le ha hecho venir a un barrio como éste. La calle está vacía y ella empieza a tener miedo. ¡Qué tonta ha sido! Tenía que haberse quedado en el taxi... La noche está cayendo."

These little paperbacks make great learning tools for those studying Spanish as other than a native tongue. Quite a few are available on Amazon. Some of the newer copies have partial audio cd's with them. But, these older copies (as pictured) don't and are cheaper because of that. I think graded adult readers are a great way to improve your reading and language skills when learning new languages! It is highly advisable to grab these if you see them in used bookstores. Often students get rid of them after learning to read.

This was an interesting little book with a rather strange, abrupt ending! Still, it's good for learning Spanish in an interesting way.
