He is best known for his work in the rock band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and his fascination with American music and its roots. He has a reputation, which he disowns, for singing dark, brooding songs which some listeners regard as depressing. His music is characterised by intensity, high energy and a wide variety of influences. He currently lives in Brighton & Hove in England.
Cave released his first book King Ink, in 1988. It is a collection of lyrics and plays, including collaborations with American enfant terrible Lydia Lunch.
While he was based in West Berlin, Cave started working on what was to become his debut novel, And the Ass Saw the Angel (1989). Significant crossover is evident between the themes in the book and the lyrics Cave wrote in the late stages of the Birthday Party and the early stage of his solo career. "Swampland", from Mutiny, in particular, uses the same linguistic stylings ('mah' for 'my', for instance) and some of the same themes (the narrator being haunted by the memory of a girl called Lucy, being hunted like an animal, approaching death and execution). A collectors' limited edition of the book appeared in 2007.
Cave wrote the foreword to a Canongate publication of the Gospel according to Mark, published in the UK in 1998. The American publication of the same book contains a foreword by a different author.

Hate to say it but this was worse than the Gladiator 2 we got

Sono rimasto davvero sconvolto, ma è pur vero che Nick Cave è sempre una garanzia. L'idea di un seguito de Il Gladiatore di Ridley Scott sembrava una cosa assurda, e tra le numerose idee che circolarono su un ipotetico seguito ecco che Cave tirò fuori una idea meravigliosa per questo film.
Senza fare spoiler basti pensare che l'idea vede Massimo Decio Meridio inimicarsi le divinità le quali lo mandano nuovamente sulla Terra, il tema centrale di questo film riguarda principalmente lo scontro tra nuove divinità e le vecchie, e di conseguenza Massimo si ritrova in una Roma turbolenta coi cristiani perseguitati e visti come una minaccia sociale sovversiva dell'ordine romano. Come se non bastasse scoprirà anche che sua moglie ha preferito abbandonare il suo posto nei Campi Elisi per dare a suo figlio una seconda possibilità di poter vivere una vita umana normale a Roma...
Il fatto di orientare la storia in un percorso più apertamente fantastico era rischioso, ma come detto, Nick Cave non delude le aspettative, soprattutto quando si parla di tematiche attinenti alla sfera esistenziale-religiosa. Mi sono emozionato come ben poche volte mi è accaduto leggendo una sceneggiatura e posso dire chiaramente che il fatto che un'idea del genere non sia stata realizzata da nessuno è la prova di come generalmente la Hollywood contemporeanea sia totalmente sterile e poco aperta a prodotti cinematografici davvero originali, preferendo optare per le vie più sicure del fanservice a base di remake, reboot o seguiti che altro non sono alla fine in ogni caso che remake del capostipite. Seppur Ridley Scott e qualcun altro si dimostrò interessato al progetto, sembra fu in primis Russel Crowe ad opporsi e il progetto cadde nel vuoto.
Leggendola la trama è molto meno assurda di quello che appare, ed è del tutto all'opposto di qualunque idea di trash o di camp, anzi. Il tono è solenne, epico, molto affine alle tragedie e al teatro antico risultando allo stesso spettacolare ma evitando scene pacchiane e roboanti. Fossero rimasti fedeli alla sceneggiatura potrei dire che il risultato sarebbe stato persino superiore al suo capostipite arricchendolo di molti elementi interessanti inediti o che nel primo erano presenti solo in nuce.
Nick Cave affermò comunque che non ci sperava troppo che il progetto venisse realizzato e così purtroppo è stato. Ma questa sceneggiatura è così completa, avvincente, affascinante e ben costruita che a questo punto spero che un giorno - almeno questo! - venga pubblicata come libro ufficialmente a tutti gli effetti!
