The Monsters Ball #6

The Scoundrel and the Satyr King

Rate this book
Dear Mister Ezra Fitzroy,

On account of the slanderous rumors revealing your ungentlemanly persona and the ill-gotten disgrace of the Fitzroy name, Her Majesty is compelled to deem the Season bequeathed to you a failure. Henceforth, in order to restore your and your family’s name, you are hereby ordered to attend the Monsters Ball by Her Majesty our Queen.

Ezra Fitzroy is a scoundrel. From the games he likes to play to the innocent wallflowers he likes to seduce— he is a devilish rogue with a hankering for trouble. After being kidnapped by his father and delivered to the ball, Ezra finds himself on his knees in a forced proposal to the Satyr King.

Pan is the charming and benevolent ruler of the creatures that live within the Lands of Essex, known to all as the Satyr King. Centuries of ruling these ancient lands have passed, and he finds himself with a conundrum— he must find a suitable mate, or he will have to give his crown to his bastard brother.

After a fateful encounter, Ezra and Pan are thrown into a game of royal charades. Our sunshiney Satyr has his work cut out for him if he wishes to seduce the scoundrel that no one has been able to love.

This is a MM historical romance featuring a human lord that wants nothing but to be free of his title and obligations, and a charming satyr king who takes an instant liking to him.
I love Clio Evans for a quick steamy read and this was that, however, I just did not click with the historical setting and insta-love. There was not enough history and information to like the characters and I feel like the human MC kept switching up, one minute he was hating on the king and the next he was happy to be with him.

What a treat! Clio really knocked it out of the park with this MM regency romance. Pan is the Satyr King and needs to find a mate to hold onto his crown so his brother doesn't try to take it. Ezra is the son set to inherit a dukedom but doesn't actually want it and goes out of his way to vex his father at every turn.

The two of them find themselves at the Monster ball and when Pan meets Ezra he knows he's the one. But Ezra is resistant to the attachment even though Pan makes him burn. A well played ruin later and Pan has Ezra right where he wants him...in his bed and on his arm.

This was just so good. Pan was cocky and dominant and I loved the way he teased Ezra. Everything comes at Ezra so fast, he doesn't even know how to react to his whole life changing. He is bratty and grumpy in the best way. Pan and Ezra had the best chemistry in and out of the bedroom and I loved the subtle Dom/sub vibe they had. Such a fun and cute read!!!

This book is what happens when Bridgerton meets monster romance 🤤

This book was such a treat from start to finish. It's fairly short, so I binge read it in one day and had so much fun. I absolutely love Clio's smut, so, naturally, I was drenched. I loved the hate-love relationship Pan and Ezra had. Pan's cockiness had me giggling the whole time.

I loved this clash of regency and monster romance, so I'll definently read other books from this series and see what other authors prepared. This was chef kiss.

If you're a fan of Bridgerton, KJ Charles, and monster romance, you'll find this to be quite a treat.

Fast, fun, and spicy. For being a novella, Clio manages to stuff this full of character development and a decent side plot with Pan’s villainous brother. More than anything, I loved the romance. It was spicy and had some twists and turns to it that fit well with these characters. Definitely my favorite of the Monsters Ball universe so far!

That's it. I am DNF-ing. This review is for the first 12 pages / 12%.

This is a historical romance/fantasy, I get it, and it's fine. But the way things are going, I don't think CE has a right to call this "regency" - too many historical errors to draw any parallel for that. You expect a certain set of rules. You expect the duke not owning "tailoring businesses". You expect the duke being the elite of the society, not just "a part" of it.

And then, of course, a 20-something human duke is asking a 500 year old King of Monsters for their hand in marriage. Wait, what is this tiny mosquito about? 🙄🙄🙄🙄

This ^^ is where my eyes rolled so far up my head, I simply can't continue anymore.

1 star.

~*~*~*~

"My eyes flew open with a growl..." 😂🤣😂

I need a shelf for the autonomous body parts blessed with all 6 senses (Yes, 6) and body parts of their own. I am thinking of naming it "medusa". After all, there was that book with "shivering and gasping hair" - Prince of the Sorrows 🤣🤣

~*~*~*~

The next pearl: "You are to restore the dishonour..." said the father to his wild, unruly son🙄

There is more, of course; in fact, too much to list it all here. Grammar and punctuation lapses are piling up. Not sure how much longer I'll be able to tolerate this mess 🤔

Amazing 😍. I love a good regency romance and mixing monsters and MM into only made it better. 🥵🖤 Pan is so dominant yet so funny and protective. Ezra is an adorable subby yet bratty baby. 🩷

I miss them already. 😭

This short regency monster novella was so freaking adorable! Grumpy/sunshine, only one bed and all the spice in true Clio fashion! This makes me want to explore the regency romance genre and I definitely will be reading the other books in the Monster Ball shared universe!

I took a deep breath, steadying myself and accepting my fate. The Monster’s Ball would be the end of my era of freedom.

Set apart from the rest of the series by the m/m tag, I hoped this read would pique my interest back into the monster/HR mash up that is the Monster's Ball multi author series. While I still appreciate the blurring lines between genres, and the spice being typical of this author, it still didn't quite hit the mark for me.

Such an angry little buck.

And thus, dear readers, ends our epic buddy read of the Monster's Ball series. Can't say we didn't try!

I feel comfortable looking to Clio Evans for adorably affectionate couple dynamics that turn hot and heavy on a dime, which is absolutely what The Scoundrel and the Satyr King offers. My favorite part of this book was Ezra and Pan’s dynamic.

As with pretty much every one of the Monster Ball books, I would caution Regency fans from expecting this story to try hard to conform to historical rules. Like, seriously. Don’t.

Monster lovers? This is going to be so much fun. It gives a sense of Bridgerton completely reimagined and redesigned with silly etiquette and fanciful balls.

Welp. I read that. That managed to make more AND LESS sense than the Warts and Claws Inc books. How characters' motivations can be spelled out, while I still find plot holes and character actions that don't add up make sense... 🤷‍♀️ for instance, our MCs get caught messing around in the garden at a ball together, and our human is accused of ruining the Satyr King... a chapter after we find out that the Satyr King is 500 years old and has massive orgies in his kingdom... but a chapter before we find out that the kingdom of monsters is kind of sort of its own thing and humans don't really know about what goes on in Monster Land DESPITE almost all upper class human families having married into upper class monster families... like... what??? And in a world where rakes exist and men get away with extramarital affairs, we're supposed to think that humans are worried about a monster King's VIRTUE?!?!

If I took a shot for every time Ezra snarled, sneered, gasped, and growled, I would be dead right now. And that's not the worst of it.

This is not a Historical Monster Romance despite 'Regency' being part of the series. It's a Monster Romance, certainly, but it's not a HR. The reason HistRom is appealing is because of the limitations it places on characters as they chase their HEA. Completely disregarding those constraints means you remove it from what defines the subgenre. And while the author writes that she "changed some or the 'rules' to allow men to marry" that's the absolute least thing to worry about being historically inaccurate.

I'm not going to go into too much detail on the amount of things written or referred to wrongly because that list would be nearly as long as the story. Given that this is a *monster* romance, there is supposed to be some fantasy involved, but that sheer about of petty inaccuracies was just frustrating and lazy (a waistcoat and a vest are the SAME thing. Men wore greatcoats over their waistcoats. A Lady in Waiting does not fetch drinks for a Queen's guest. A dukedom is not a family business. It's an entity that supports the monarch).

As for the storytelling, I was hard pressed not to DNF because nothing happens between the characters until nearly 60% (except a bj 10 minutes after they meet ofc). And the characterization of both mains felt shallow and uncreative. Ezra, as a man and heir, still had a lot of mobility yet he was written--for lack of a better word--pathetically. Quite frankly, his entire character just screamed womanly to me which is off-putting when I'm expecting a M/M romance. There is nothing I love more than a man who shows emotion, but nearly every response or reaction could have easily come from a female character.

Pan. The Satyr King. How entirely uninteresting, from his cheekiness in the beginning to his overly simplistic antagonist of a brother storyline. I really can't think of anything that convinced me to want to root for him. If he was meant to have some deep heart it never showed itself because he just remained vainglorious and cavalier from start to finish (except of course when he's suddenly in-love). There's also nothing I dislike more than when a character literally states the trope of the story in dialogue.

The side characters were simultaneously frustrating and confusing, and again their placements and actions were just wildly inaccurate to be called HR.

The spice and hardly weird peen doesn't even save this for me.

If you want solid, well written MM HistRom, KJ Charles, Cat Sebastian, Eliot Grayson, Pam Godwin, Kate Pearce, Adriana Herrera and Sierra Simone are all top reads.

“Do you know how much you mean to me already, Ezra? I’ve been waiting for you all my life, to finally feel a tangible connection with a soul that is all mine. I have been searching, and even with all the lustful passions I have shared over the years, all of them pale in comparison to even simply being gazed upon by you. I ache for your acceptance, to hear you say that you want me how I want you. My entire being was created to be with yours, to create a life of love with you.”

Listen. Clio just can’t write a mediocre book. No. She has to make me blush one moment and cry in public the next. The Scoundrel & The Satyr King is such a sweet little treat of a read. It’s got monster, historical, forced marriage, one bed, a scandal, and grumpy/sunshine. I simply loved this couple and their quick burn romance. It made the perfect spicy bedtime read. When you find an author that knows how to write a romance that cranks all your gears never let them go. Clio you’re stuck with me for fucking ever babe. I started 2022 becoming obsessed with your monsters and it’s what officially kicked off my love for monsters. It’s a true pleasure to see you continue to write better and better romances with not a bad one in the bunch. I know this is supposed to be a review but it turned into a love letter ok?

This is definitely a first for me - reading a regency monster romance. I knew...knew Clio Evans would make their story äbsölutëly äh-mäzïng & öh-sö-wïckëd-sëxy & cärnälly dëliciöus...!! 🥵...aaaaannnnddd it being a MM Romance - all the better! This was the romance combo I did not know I needed to read & have in my life. As always, Clio brought their descriptive world-building genuis, beautiful emotional depth and hot A.F. mön§tër §ëx to the Scoundrel & the Satyr King. 🔥🥰  Ezra is the scoundrel forced to go to the Monster's Ball that Pan, our Satyr King is attending. As with all regency romances, Ezra & Pan are caught in a *very* compromising position 😏 at the Monster's Ball. Pan forces Ezra into marriage. What happens next? You will have to buy the Scoundrel & the Satyr King to find out.

🖤💜 Everything Clio Evans writes is fantastic, they are an immediate buy & read asap.

😊🌴🌺 I received an ARC thru BookFunnel via the Author for my honest review.

I leave you with Pan's heartfelt declaration to Ezra... (if we all could be so lucky to have this for ourselves...) 🥰 💕

TW - assault (not by either MC), duelling with guns
CW - breeding kink, bondage, wax play

Tropes - MM, regency romance, forced marriage, novella, one bed, grumpy x sunshine, paranormal (monsters), fated mates

This was a spicy, cute and quick read. Clio Evans always delivers when it comes to monster romance and this one is no exception

The two MMC, Pan & Ezra, need to wed for different reasons and meet each other at the Monster Ball held by Queen Charlotte. Pan (The Satyr King) feels almost pulled to Ezra whilst Ezra wants nothing to do with this or his social class. He doesn't want the pressure from his father to take over the business and maintain a lifestyle that doesn't feel true to him just because of their family name but not even Ezra can fight fate.

Scale:
⭐️ - would've DNF'ed / continued out of spite
⭐️⭐️ - shit, but whatever
⭐️⭐️⭐️ - meh, could've been better
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - lit 👅
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - loved it, inject this shit into my veins 🤪

🌶🌶🌶 - standard smut, hot
🌶🌶🌶🌶 - 🥵 okay, some CW

I know, I know. I loved a book by Clio Evans. Big surprise, right? I just adore her writing. I’m not a big regency/Victorian era reader but these monster ball books…I’m LIVING for them. They are just so good. I’m eating them up like crumpets at a tea party.

I loved seeing our scoundrel Ezra be completely blindsided by his affection for King Pan. Their relationship was steaming hot from the beginning to end (of the book, not their relationship bc you won’t catch me recommending non-HEA romance). I felt like I was in the period romance with the characters and the monster twist is just sweet as can be.

The smirk on the cover says it all. Pan knew what he was doing but that’s a sacrifice he was willing to make to get to Ezra. I loved how Pan just rolled with his feelings and did stuff like removing all the beds in his home before Ezra arrives to force a one bed trope LOL.

Overall, this was such a fun, quick, steamy read and I would definitely go back and read it again. I loved it so much.

I'm not much of a regency era or historical romance kind of person, but somehow Clio Evans managed to make me love TSATSK. Especially the Monster ball,  which is usually my least favorite part of these types of books.

Ezra is the towns rebel, known for causing chaos, who finds himself being thręatened to loose the family title and money by his father, who is tired of his behavior. Even if he doesn't want them, he knows he's in trouble and must now find someone to marry at the Monster Ball. From the moment the seductive Satyr King, Pan, sets eyes on him, he knows Ezra will be his. Dealing with his own problem of being forced to find a mate in order to keep his crown, Pan becomes determined to make Ezra his after being found in a compromising position.

What starts as hate quickly becomes an undeniable attraction between these two. But will it be enough to save both their reputation and secure the crown, or will they be forced to lose it all? Will Pan make Ezra realize they are meant to be or will their enemies get what they want? Read to find out!

Such a fun read!

I don't mind historical/regency romances, but they aren't my typical choice. I was a bit hesitant to read this as I was fearful, I would struggle with the antiquated speech and be turned off.

My fears were unfounded. This was such a fun easy read that made me smile. Did I need to google a few words?? YES Did that take away from the enjoyment of this book?? Absolutely NOT.

The Satyr Kind aka Pan falls hard for the feisty brat of a Scoundrel. He isn't concerned with societal standards and has no problem putting negative people in their place. I could see Benedict Cumberbatch or Matt Smith playing the king. He's has a mischievous but commanding persona and he likes a challenge.

Ezra aka The Scoundrel is a fun brat. He just wants to live his life free of responsibilities and judgement. He is flustered by the king and fights his feelings.

Overall I really enjoyed this story. It was lighthearted, comical, and spicy.

The Scoundrel and the Satyr King
A MM Regency Monster Romance
By Clio Evans

126 pages
Paperback live for purchase, ebook currently on pre-order.
Publication date April 18th, 2023

I received an advanced reader copy of this book, and this is my honest review. Please, watch out for possible spoilers, including but not limited to, TW/CN/Etc.

Possible TW, Tropes, and Genres
Mature, Spicy, Romance, Monster Romance, MM, Gay Romance, Oral, Anal, Full Monster Shifting, Sexy Peen, Death of a Parent (previously off page), Caught in a Compromised State, BDSM, CNC, Wax Play, Public Nudity and Sex, Touch Him And Die, Fated Mates, Bonded Mates, Monstrous Peen, Hate Sex, Breeding (without pregnancy) kink, Instalove, Bondage, Edging, Assault not from either MMC, Dueling with Guns, and possibly more…

How in the world do I ever talk about this book.  Like, if ALL regency came with sexy touch them and die monsters, and gay sex, I would be all up in them. 😂

Clio took regency, called out its bs, and gave us a heartwarming love story where both main characters are kinda lost in their lives.  When they finally truly see each other, they fall head over heals.

I loved their HEA, and this is the kinda hea I want for all of the lgbtqai2 community.

Just… Y'all… Go and read it!!

First of all a big thank you to Clio for providing me with an ARC of her upcoming release.

That being said... Historical romance is most definitely not my thing. But, and her comes the but, if you add monsters and MM into the mix? Yeah, I might be into that.

This was extremely well done for a novella. 100 pages and the plot was on point.

Pan was amazing. I would've read a whole book about him. This was fantastic. He had such great humor, even though most people didn't think of it that way. I would've loved to see one of his parties though. That would've been lots of fun for sure.

And Ezra. This man was so mad at the world, at his father and at his roots. All he wanted was to be left alone. What he found instead was a king who definitely didn't leave him alone.

Oh no, this king tricked him into marriage. But while Ezra might feel he did it for his own benefits, Pan also knew it would free Ezra of his responsibilities to his father.

If you're into the monster genre, but unsure of the historical genre. This is a fun way to dabble into both. Bridgerton meets monster romance for sure.

I was very excited about this title but in the end I think it should have been a bit longer. The biggest issue is that we don’t really get a chance to see their feelings for each other come to life. The king seems to like / want Ezra right away but it’s not really obvious why. Their meeting and pre meeting scene deserved to be more detailed. And then Ezra’s feelings are very extreme without seeing much of his inner thoughts. He’s mad but then he’s not and he’s in love in a day. We don’t really understand the evolution. The rest was good, we understand the world etc…but the lack of descriptions of their feelings was a big deal for me.
Also it seemed a bit rushed: there’s a threat but the action scene is done very quickly.

And what happened to Phoebe’s book? I thought it was supposed to come out after this one but it’s not available anywhere?

✨BOOK REVIEW✨- The Scoundrel and the Satyr King by Clio Evans

There’s really only one word that came to mind while reading this “quirky”. It was just a quirky book. It’s a very interesting take on a historical romance. I did love the monsters living in regency era England. The dialogue outside of the spicy scenes were a little cringe and awkward to read. If you like short monstrous novellas with spicy praise kink then definitely give it a go. It’s not my favorite Clio Evans read, but Clio is still one of my favorite authors.

Check the trigger/content warnings.

UNOFFICIAL BOOK SUMMARY🐐🧺🃏🍯
Ezra doesn’t want to be his father’s heir so he whiles away the time being a rogue. Pan is the satyr king and to keep his crown he’ll need to marry. One monsters ball later finds these two bethroed.

Pan, my darling devious Satyr King. Ezra, my grumpy grumbly scoundrel. What a pair!

This was such a delightful fast read. Clio Evans writes monster romance like no one else. I just LOVE this and cannot wait to read the rest of the books in this shared universe.

It's trope-tastic in the best way. But with several twists to them which I appreciated! Example that is not too spoilery, there is the Only One Bed trope...because it was purposefully made to be that way.

This book is hella fast burn because fated mates. The spice is WONDERFUL. The subplot of evil brother I wish would have drawn out a little more, I wish this book was longer to allow for more buildup and take down. But still enjoyed it.

If you like Regency Romance and monsters, pick this one up soon!

Once again Clio Evans has created a truly outstanding story! This book is everything we didn’t know we needed…MM Regency Monster Romance anyone!?! YES PLEASE!
Pan and Ezra were completely electric together. Despite their own reservations there is no doubt that these two were fated in the stars. The Scoundrel and his Satyr King indeed. One completely charismatic and the other a little broody, but they both bring out this vulnerable side just wanting to be love and accepted. From steamy moments *fans self*, to silly moments, to moment filed by love and passion. Ezra and Pan are the complete package. I absolutely LOVED this book!

The Scoundrel and the Satyr King can be read as a standalone, but is part of a Paranormal Regency Romance series with Multiple POV's and ends in an HEA. MM romance

I have been waiting for this book to come out since it was teased and I am so pleased with it. I absolutely love the whole concept of the series that this book exists in. Regency Monster Romance? Yes. Please. Pan and Ezra were so fantastic and I loved their banter. Pan is just so perfect for Ezra and once Ezra got over the fact that he was settling down for good, he realized how perfect he was for Pan. Their chemistry started off slow, but escalated quickly.

I love the worlds that Clio Evans creates. In this case of the joint world with many of my other favorite monster romance authors, it was fantastic and connected well with the other intertwining stories.

Bridgerton meets monsters and I’m here for it👏🏽

Anything Clio writes is always AMAZING! This book was a quick fun read and I love the regency era so this was *chefs kiss* 🤌🏽. Pan and Ezra got that chemistry and it is HOT 🥵. THE SCENE IN THE LAVENDER FIELD 😮‍💨🫠. Being a part of Clio’s patreon has its perks because the art for that scene is 🥵. Pan’s brother was a little menace and I was not expecting Pan to flip the tables on his brother like that, it was funny 😂 .

Happy Release Day to you Clio!! Go pick this book up for a quick spicy read!

Reading through this series and this one is my favorite. The reluctant scoundrel marrying the Satyr King. Pan is fun, playful and so cheeky. Ezra is cranky and stubborn and hesitant to recognize his feelings. This series is a set of novellas and I would have been happy to spend longer with these two. Clio's writing and sassy characters grabbed me from the get-go. I will be looking for more books by this author.

But also the spice! Ooo bring a fan it got hot in here and no sign of that temperature colling off.
