The Lost Daughter

Rate this book
“Don’t make me ask twice.” After coming to terms with her husband’s death, Special FBI agent Emily Slate thought she’d finally be able to move on with her life. But when the assassin who has been hunting her shows up on her front door with a gun in her hand, Emily knows it’s far from over. It seems the assassin has been betrayed by the same Organization who hired her, and must now rely on Emily to help her enact her revenge. But when Emily refuses, the assassin raises the stakes, putting Emily’s personal life in danger and giving her no choice but to comply. In order to take down the Organization that’s been plaguing her the last eight months, Emily will need to track down the whereabouts of a US Representative’s missing daughter. If Emily can find her, then her captors will lead them back to the Organization and Emily will be done with this once and for all. But Emily knows she can’t trust the woman who murdered her husband. And as the consequences of her actions begin to unfold, Emily will discover the Organization is a lot closer than she suspects. And if she manages to catch up to them, she’ll be faced with an impossible choice. Better hurry, Emily, before it’s too late.
For everyone.

The stakes have just gone sky high for Agent Emily Slate in The Lost Daughter. The rigid lines between law and order are blurred as the assassin of her husband enters her life in a real way.

A young girl has been kidnapped from her House of Representative's Father's home and the assassin wants Emily to steal the case file for her in exchange for her life.

Needless to say, Emily reports the incident. Janice Simmons, her boss, sets up a sting operation that goes wildly wrong, resulting in Agent Liam Coll being at risk to die.

The farther Emily gets into the mystery of her husband's death and the involvement of the assassin, the more disgusting and dangerous the situation becomes.

As Emily disregards a direct order from SAC Simmons, in order to save the young girl who was kidnapped, her life and Agent Coll's hang in the balance.

Will Emily survive? Will the assassin triumph? What will become of this horrible "Organization" that is kidnapping young girls? All the answers lie within The Lost Daughter.

Alex Sigmore just gets better and better! With each Emily Slate novel, your pulse will pound; your stomach will tighten and the excitement of waiting for the next one becomes agonizing. Definitely a five star read.

I thought the other books in the series were great books, but this one outshines all of them. There are more twist and turns than you can imagine and things coming out of left field you never see. This book is full of action, feelings, and danger. I LOVED IT! I would highly recommend the story. It is a 10 star out of 5 stars if you know what I mean.

Riveting

There are so many hidden parts to this series. No telling who to trust or who is on the take. I'm sure there are still more secrets that will come to light in the next installment.

A lost little lamb, a dangerous assassin, and one crazy roller coaster ride

Kidnapping. Child trafficking. Hired assassins. Double agents. A shadowy cabal whose goals and affiliations remain shrouded in mystery… This book packs a punch!

Poor Emily is pushed to the breaking point in this installment. She’s finally face-to-face with the woman responsible for her husband’s death only to find herself strong armed into aiding the woman’s own devious agenda. With the life of someone Emily cares for on the line, how far will she go to save them?

Alex Sigmore continues to deftly weave a complicated web around Emily, one where her personal choices and her cases overlap, pushing and testing the limits of her principles. Watching Emily respond and getting an inside peek into her state of mind as she wrestles with the dilemma is a gripping torment. I’m 100% invested in her story.

This book in the series was fantastic. And just when I thought everything was all wrapped up, there's a loose end that will (thankfully) bring Emily Slate back for more.

I was glued to this book and needed to know how all the pieces of this story and the longer arc was all coming together. I will say that it was incredibly well done.

I've said it before, this is not really my genre of reading, but I have thoroughly enjoyed every book in the series. It's dark, it's gruesome, and it's very well written.

This one was hard, not in a literary sense but an emotional one. Alex tugs deeply at your heart strings exploring the horrifically seedy parts of life. This book runs the emotional gamut love, passion, fear, disgust, outrage and excitement. I find myself emotionally exhausted but eagerly anticipating what’s discovers in THE SECRET SEVEN! I hate to think this series will ever end. If you have not read it, you should! Grab a friend, form a book club, you won’t want to miss all the excitement of sharing with friends.

Received as an ARC, this is an honest review. Exhausted by the recent events of a deeply intense case, all Emily Slate wants is a well deserved break... she never imagined the hornets nest she'd fall into once back home. Instead of peace, Emily finds herself confronted by her deadly shadow- desperate and demanding Emily to deliver a case file that will enable this assassin to begin to collapse the Organization that's demanding this killer to be murdered. The haunting twist is to sacrifice the innocence of twelve year old Avery Huxley to certain perverted individuals of the group; this is something Emily will not allow to happen... to the ire of Camille. To keep Emily focused where she wants it; she puts Agent Liam Coll's life on the line, leaving Emily desperate to find and free both Liam and Avery. Even if it means breaking the Oath Emily has sworn to uphold; this Organization is swift and dangerous and what Emily unravels is how entrenched her own in-laws are within it. A stark confrontation with Chris and Dani only begins to expose the dark secrets they know of how sick and messed up the organization is. Sacrifices are going to be made and Emily is praying it won't be the innocent that pays. A seriously amazing, gritty story that delivers what's expected from Alex Sigmore. Highly recommended.

Lost and Found

A young girl is kidnapped. A mysterious criminal organization will do what it takes to neutralize the threats against them even if that means killing FBI Agent Emily Slate. It is life or death for Emily.

Good read, fast paced and exciting. This focused on the organization responsible for Emily's husband's death. A bit outlandish but a fun story.

Book 6 starts as most of the other books do with, the introduction of the crime that will be the basis for the story. We are introduced to young Avery who is at home alone on her birthday, her parents, a busy Politician and his Wife, out of town on business. Things don’t start well for young Avery though, when there is a break in at the house, and she is kidnapped.
This returns us to the events at the end of Book 5, in which Emily had just come home, to find the Assassin in her living room pointing a gun at her. Without giving too much away, a discussion takes place, and Emily is given a choice, perform a service for the Assassin, or watch her friends be killed.
It quickly becomes apparent that the Assassin’s interests, and the case of the young missing girl are mixed up, and as such, Emily is tasked with the case, along with Zara and Liam (who is also given the role of protecting Emily).
At the initial task that Emily was given, things go wrong, and the Assassin gives Emily a new ultimatum, she has a day to find the girl and those responsible, or Liam, who she has taken hostage, dies.
This is where the story ramps up into overdrive as Emily and Zara now have two lives in the balance, a young girl who is in terrible danger, but now also the man she has started to develop very strong feelings for, the first since her husband was killed. Emily has the full backing of the FBI now, with her Supervisor Janice, fully behind her in capturing this mysterious woman and discovering who she works for. But as Emily digs deeper into the case, it only uncovers darker secrets, not only of this mysterious organisation, but also links to her life she hadn’t thought possible.
This book is one of the most intense yet, full of conspiracy and intrigue, and captivating mystery. The world building is brilliant as we delve deeper into the various aspects of not only Emily’s background, but also the Assassin (we get to learn all sorts in this book), but there has been some good research into the FBI as well. As with all the other books, there is also some great procedural work with regards to the actual crime, and logistics surrounding those involved (without spoilers).
The character work continues to be the driving force behind this series, with Emily Slate being such an exceptional character. She is an incredibly passionate and driven person, highly intelligent, with keen insight into those things around her. However, she has been thrown by the fact her now dead husband managed to hide something from her for so long. On top of that, this mysterious woman not only killed her husband, but has been interfering with her life for so long, and there seems to be nothing she can do about it, as this woman is one step ahead of her at every stage. One of the great things about this series is that Emily, whilst she is such an amazing investigator, is flawed at times with her emotive side, however, it is her best friend, and work partner Zara, who keeps her in check. Zara originally worked behind a desk, supplying Emily with information, but has been promoted to field agent, and now works alongside Emily. The two of them make an excellent team, each keeping the other in check at times, or complementing the others abilities to make an outstanding team.
As with the other books, there are a selection of rather sinister and nasty characters (no spoilers), and Sigmore does a brilliant job of creating these gritty, realistic people that are so real, you know that you have met people like them, but they have that alternative malicious side that is just pure evil that they keep hidden from everyone. The other addition is the look at the Assassin, but I am not giving any details, other than to say, this was fascinating.
It should be noted that there is some suggestion of child sexual abuse in this book for those that may be susceptible to triggers.
Overall, this is another compelling episode in the Slate Saga, and if you love a good thriller, then this should not be missed. Book 6 is one of the best yet as it really starts to unravel the mystery we have been wanting answers to for so long. Sigmore continues to create a riveting and engaging series that is just brilliant!!

This was a fast-pace novel that is sure to keep the reader glued to the pages. I really enjoyed seeing Emily both in and out of her element as she worked hard to put the pieces together and find a missing twelve-year-old girl before something heinous happens to her. What I mean by this is that she uses all of the resources at her disposal to do something she is being forced to do (or else Special Agent Coll may be the one to pay the price), however she isn't afraid to go off book on this one for the greater good.

In fact, I was more upset at the way her superiors tried to rake her across the coals over her choice. And while I understand that she disobeyed direct orders from her superior officer, and in the process let go a member of the very organization she wanted to help the assassin dismantle, but I strongly agree with Emily's motivation that the safety and well-being of Representative Huxley's daughter should have taken priority over that. An old sick man can be found again, but once those horrors had been inflicted upon Avery, that is something she would have had to live with for the rest of her life.

I will give potential readers a warning on this one though, the situation surrounding Avery is very DARK and DISTURBING. It deals with a child-kidnapping ring where the children are exploited by men in power. Thankfully, there were no scenes depicting such behavior, but some of the depictions of other things as well as just the thought of this is enough to be off-putting for a lot of people.

One last thing I enjoyed was seeing her former in-laws get their comeuppance, even though I wish Emily could have gotten the answers she needs before then.

I already have book #7 on my kindle, and will be diving into that one tonight, as despite my rocky love/hate relationship with this series, I did enjoy this one a lot and am hoping the next is just as good and the author doesn't slip back into their old habits.

Emily is being targeted again by the assassin. Why is she being targeted.

Emily has to call the agency again the assassin has been in her house again. But this time she wants something, Emilies help! There is no way she is planning to help the woman that killed her husband. But if she doesn’t the next targets will be her best friends in the FBI. HER BEST FRIENDS IN THE WORLD. What is she going to do? She has to save the little girl and that means doing what she has been asked.

This was the best of the series thus far. Good, interesting storyline, and it held my interest throughout the book. It was the first in the series I couldn’t wait to get back to each day. But I continue to be frustrated by the sloppy writing in this author’s books. Does anyone proof read these, review for any corrections needed, prior to the release of the books? Numerous typos are found throughout this (and all) of the books in this series. And inconsistencies are so frequent, to the point of annoyance! For example, Emily puts on a bathrobe. 2 pages later…wait, she’s now wearing a towel. 2 more pages later, wait again, she’s in a bathrobe!! I realize these things don’t impact the storyline but for crying out loud! It’s sloppy work! Get a proofreader!!!

The Lost Daughter

A little girl is kidnapped, Emily is still dealing with the assassin, Liam is kidnapped and Sara is shot. In the end the girl is rescued, Chris is killed as is a head of the committee, Dani is outed Liam is found and the assassin, Camille I'd dead. The whole department is under IA review and Emily may be reassigned or fired. Love this author.

Emily Slate is constantly getting assignments that seem simple, but turn out to be difficult. However she manages to solve the crimes in record time by using her uncanny skill. This episode was full of surprises and struggle ,but she managed to get in done in time. This was another "stay up late to finish" because I could not put it down!

Wow, what a thrill ride. Emily is given an untenable task -- find a missing girl and let the woman who killed her husband know where she is. She works to save the girl from a terrible situation and tries to balance her FBI responsibilities with the need to protect a hostage. This was very fast paced with a great ending. I am anxious to see where the author takes us next.

This was an explosive storyline which gives many answers but also raises a lot of questions. That is what a good book does. I can't wait to start book 6 and see what Emily's future looks like and what part Liam has to do with it.
