El Heredero / The Heir

Rate this book

Johanna Helen Howard was born on March 10, 1952 in Germany, where her father, Edwin Dennis Howard, a soldier in the U.S. Army was stationed. The family moved about a great deal when she was young. Her father always dreamed of retiring to Hawaii, and after he passed away in 1964 Johanna and her mother settled there to honor him.

In 1970, when she was still in school, she married Ralph Lindsey, becoming a young housewife. The marriage had three children; Alfred, Joseph and Garret, who already have made her a grandmother. After her husband's death, Johanna moved to Maine, New England, to stay near her family.

Johanna Lindsey wrote her first book, Captive Bride in 1977 "on a whim", and the book was a success. By 2006, with over 58 Million copies of her books have been sold worldwide, with translations appearing in 12 languages, Johanna Lindsey is one of the world's most popular authors of historical romance.

Johanna's books span the various eras of history, including books set in the Middle Ages, the American "Old West" and the popular Regency England-Scotland. She has even written a few sci-fi romances. By far the most popular among her books are the stories about the Malory-Anderson Family, a Regency England saga.

Johanna Lindsey died on Oct. 27, 2019 in Nashua, N.H. She was 67.

No passion. No romance.

This book is about a handsome Scottish heir coming down to England and struggling with an unwanted arranged engagement with a bratty but gorgeous and the most desirable woman in London. And she isn't even suppose to be the female lead character!

Sabrina, the female lead character, is constantly described in this book by characters as being plain-looking and unwanted by men. Hardly what any readers want in the female lead. So she has a great personality? It doesn't help with the romance part since Duncan, the male lead, states she is his friend with NO HINT of feelings for her, except sexual attraction. Even after their kiss and sex, Duncan is firm that his actions with Sabrina were impulses and that she is no more than a friend. No romance from his POV.
SHE IS THE BIGGEST FRIEND-ZONED FEMALE CHARACTER IN "ROMANCE" GENRE HISTORY! lol

Only hint of romantic feelings especially from Duncan is at the way end of the book, making it disconnect horribly.

Sex scene is bland. After he has sex with Sabrina, he gets re-engaged to his fiance (Ophelia) for her reputation's sake. But he doesn't think about Sabrina's reputation, the girl he actually DID compromise. She now isn't a virgin (a big deal when trying to get a husband then), and might easily be pregnant by him now.

This book just isn't a romance novel, plain and simple. No romance between the lead characters, if only physical, but even then there is no passion. And it talks more about the haughty fiance Ophelia than it does about Sabrina.

I love Johanna Lindsey, but this book doesn't compare to her other stories.

This is the first time I am reading about such a young hero. Usually the heroes are on their 30s or is a widower already so we didn't see his marriage when he was young, only the aftermath of the wife's death. In this case our hero is only 21 years old, so young imo, although he was mature for his years...

You know that one friend you have that is able to befriend almost everyone and make everyone laugh and feel good about themselves? That's our heroine. Who sees everything in the veil of friendship. So it was nice seeing her befriending the hero, it was nice seeing her falling in love but I have a lot of reservations about a important thing that happens in the plot that made the hero be a gentleman with a person that did NOT deserve and do nothing to the person that really deserved it. So, that made me enjoy this book less than I would have otherwise.

In the end they had their HEA but for me he should have thought about his actions towards the heroine and try to make some amends before that happened.

This could have easily being a 4 star but I am going for a 3 because I wanted him to grovel.

PS: if you want amazing family members that can't stop bickering, this book had that aplenty. I enjoyed it immensely.

Was this tepid, dull romance actually penned by Johanna Lindsey? The Heir was the first book I noticed a weird change in her writing. Previously, if there was a Lindsey I didn't like, it was usually because of the excessive fighting or the lack of chemistry between the protagonists. There is friendship for sure in this one, but romantic isn't what I'd call the relationship between Duncan and Sabrina.

Duncan, a Highland Scot, is the new heir to be an English Marquess. Everyone is eager to meet this new laird, er lord, especially the young ladies in town. Sabrina has no designs on Duncan; she's plump, plain, orphaned, and not anyone's ideal candidate for a wife. Certainly not for an heir to a Marquessate.

Then there's the manipulative, beautiful Ophelia, who desperately wants Dunacan's title.

Slowly, painfully slowly, Sabrina and Duncan's relationship turns physical, and one night they make love. But Ophelia's scheming makes it appear as if Duncan has ruined her, so the red-haired idiot decides to do the honorable thing: marry Ophelia. Unfortunately, Duncan is too young, and he flounders in areas where a more mature man might have acted differently. I can't imagine too many other previous Lindsey heroes going along with this stupidity.

And of course, Sabrina says nothing, as she wants no part in a scandal, and boo-hoo, she wasn't cut out for marriage anyway. Because who would in his right mind want a schlub like her?

If it weren't for the only interesting character in this book, Raphael, twisting Ophelia's arm to break the engagement, Duncan would be married to a woman he didn't love and never touched. As it is, I wasn't even sure he loved Sabrina. But, as I said, they were friends, or at least, they often conversed with one another without resorting to bickering, like so many Lindsey leads tended to do.

I listened to this one years ago on audio cassette as I'd drive to and from work. I think that's the only way I could have consumed this story. Reading it would have been a chore. As it was, that one-hour round trip should have passed easily with an audiobook to listen to, but sadly, The Heir was not a fun read. It just was. Does that make sense?

I was not too fond of almost all the characters except Raphael. Sabrina was spineless, Duncan was a squish with an annoying brogue, and Ophelia was just a bitch who didn't deserve her own book. When I saw Duncan's mullet hairstyle on the inside cover of the actual paperback book, it turned me off even more and made me long for the days of Fabio.

I think since the Heir, I've only read one "newer" Lindsey I liked: When Passion Rules, which was a mildly better version of Once A Princess, another one I wasn't crazy about.

Oh well, Johanna Lindsey had a great run for a long time as a writer of maybe not the best-written but fantastic books that made historical romance exciting. Although she's now gone to the great beyond to be with her beloved husband, she does leave behind a legacy of entertaining romance novels that made tens of millions of readers fall in love. Too bad The Heir wasn't one of them.

2 1/2 stars (extra half star just because, but it's really a 2 star read at best)

There was so much stupid, unnecessary drama in this book, it was a disappointment.
I had a lot of problems with this book, first of all Ophelia was really annoying, one of the worst characters ever. I hated her actions.
Then there we have our hero, Duncan. I wasn't very pleased with him either. I didn't like how long it took for him to realise he loves Sabrina more than just a friend. Sabrina was alright though, not a very exciting character, but she's okay.
I hated the twists and turns with Mavis in the end, it was just unnecessary how she was keep changing her mind.
I won't be reading the next books in this series.

Well this is what happens when you accidentally leave your own books at home and end up rooting through a family member's attic for reading material.

What the hell was this? I recognize it was just a romance novel, not some Pulitzer prize winner, but the dialogue was atrocious and incredibly contrived and forced, the innumerable (and unnecessary) twists and turns lead to a still pathetically predictable ending (oh surprise surprise at who got who....and I don't just mean the main 2. You could have seen all the pairings coming in the first 20 pages or so), and even the sex and romance was dull and badly written, which, since that's the reason many people seem to read romance novels, is practically sacrilege. Oh, and it had the most ridiculous drawing on the inside cover. How many Scots run around in their kilts and NOTHING ELSE, and the female is wearing something no one had even conceived of in 19th century England. AAAAH!

I want my Mary Tudor biography back.

(EDIT: I feel compelled to point out: I'm not a connoisseur of romance novels. I almost never read them, and in fact avoid them. Therefore, people who enjoy this genre in general should probably take my review with a grain of salt.)

The Heir was an enjoyable story. I loved the H/H Duncan MacTavish and Sabrina. The secondary characters were very good Duncan's grandfathers Neville and Archie were a Hoot!! Sabrina had to maiden aunts who were very entertaining too.

Overall a great believable Historical Romance. It hits all the notes I love in this genre. Rich, Titled Lord who is kind, sexy and handsome. Kind generous Young Heirion. Just a fast moving and very good story.

I can't believe I've had this tucked away in my drawer for so long and only read it now. I loved this story of unexpected love. Sabrina is a country girl brought to London for her first ever season. She lives with her two spinster aunts and can only survive the big city by being taken under the wing by the most beautiful and sought after debutante, Ophelia Reid.
Ophelia is promised to a Scottish Highlander, Duncan MacTavish, but she's been spreading rumours about him and his barbaric ways hoping her parents will dissolve the union. She's never seen the Scot, and he the same. However, when Duncan arrives in England he's bitter as well. Until he meets Sabrina and becomes friends with her. But a scandal in her past makes her ineligible for Duncan's hand. Besides, he's promised to the most beautiful girl to grace the London scene. Can Sabrina and Duncan find a way to be together?

This was truly a lovely HR. It was well written and had enough laughs mixed with angst to keep me from wanting to put it down. I adored Sabrina. She knew she wasn't gorgeous. She knew her past was tainted by scandal. She also knew she could never attract the likes of a handsome, richly titled and roguish Scotsman like Duncan. But of course she could. What I loved about her was despite her apparent shortcomings( she was still an attractive girl and incredibly charming, despite what she thought ), she was content with accepting herself and her lot in life. Coming from a titled family, Sabrina never dared to imagine a man like Duncan would choose her. But she was okay with that. And that's what I think made her one of the best heroines I've read. She didn't snark, put others down or wallow in her failures. She was charming, kind and incredibly compassionate.

I thought Duncan was wonderful, his only criticism being he put honour ahead of more important things. But he was completely believable as the besotted stranger that came looking for a fight but found love instead. I hated Ophelia! What a bitch! The next story is hers, so I'll have to settle down before reading it, I didn't like her that much.
I wish there was an epilogue, but I'm sure Sabrina and Duncan will make an appearance in the next book. The secondary characters were funny, from the bickering grandfathers and aunts, to the charmingly devilish Raphael Locke. Loved it.

I LOVED Duncan...he enjoyed LAUGHING with Sabrina...and Sabrina could make him laugh heartily. A Hero that likes to laugh...and not be all serious and ALPHA all the time...what a refreshing change!

Duncan needs to marry...his Scottish grandfather wants him to choose someone GORGEOUS...His English grandfather just wants him to choose...and get some heirs.

Duncan is a bit shocked as he's only 21 and no one told him that he was going to inherit the English title.

He's also annoyed. Just after his arrival in England he takes himself out to ride off the annoyance. There he meets Sabrina...she eases his temper and makes him laugh. He doesn't catch her name.

Her little secret is that there is a scandal in her past. An assortment of relatives have killed themselves...or not...but they appear to have killed themselves...which is enough to make a, gasp, SCANDAL...it "must" be in the blood.

Sabrina has been introduced into Society by the daughter of a friend of her aunt. Ophelia is HORRIBLE...she's beyond BEAUTIFUL...but she's mean, spiteful, jealous and an all around HIDEOUS person.

But she's so pretty...that should give her a pass on everything...at least in her own mind.

Ophelia makes life miserable for everyone...with Duncan and Sabrina at the top of the list.

Is there anyway for Duncan and Sabrina to find an HEA? Well, this IS Johanna Lindsey writing this, so I had faith in the HEA.

The journey to get there kept me on the edge of my seat.

The next book in this series is about Ophelia...will be interesting to see if JL can make me LIKE her....because right now she needs to be dropped to the bottom of a deep well...!!!

My My...a story can twist and turn so much. literally as if just for the purpose of having a thick novel, the author put up so many obstacles in the way of the marriage between the main characters.

¿A quien elegirá Ducan?

1. I have been reading Johanna Lindsey books since I was a starry-eyed 13 year-old, stashing her paperbacks under my bed. This is one of JL’s weaker novels and is one of the dud books that form JL’s later, duller, flatter books. Those familiar with her books will have noticed a kind of dispirited storytelling going on by 30 pages in. There is very little actual engagement with the hero or heroine, human charm, or real emotionality - where is the heady heights of anticipation, unexpected tenderness, angst, humour, wanting? That familiar style of writing with a masterful grip on romantic tension? The hallmarks of JL’s simple, charming writing, arguably what propelled her to #1, are missing here. This is more of what I personally consider my JL blacklist type that seems to have started after 2000 - with a plot about family and some tepid objections to a grandson’s choice of wife (who has an vaguely objectionable family tree). There is no “love triumphs all” or character development going on, finding each other doesn’t change anything for the couple. (Which really tells you how unromantic this is). The family members with the unsubstantiated objections eventually change their mind. Romantic love takes a backseat and there is nearly no motivation propelling the story forward.

I’m not sure if it was experimentation with her winning style and formula. In this book, which would usually be a chase towards love, JL fusses about institutions, family elders, pouring her attention into the older characters and giving them vocal opinions on backstories, and unsolicited opinions to what makes love work. By word count alone, JL is more interested in the characters of the grandfathers and the old unmarried aunts and what they have to say about a romance that hasn’t even started. In contrast to what should be the supporting cast, the leading man and lady are flat and opaque and an afterthought. Their motivations, thoughts, dialogue and more are totally lacking in liveliness. It is almost a catalogue of grumbling seniors, or perhaps a comedy of manners, except of course there isn’t enough literary horsepower to carry something like that.

So I have been scratching my head wondering why 2000 marks a downwards trajectory of her writing. Does a romance author reach a point where age or perhaps family roles somehow erects a wall between herself and her youthful subjects? Maybe. But JL was only 48 then. There is a real detachment going on, and all the typical intimate insight into her characters’ emotions are half-hashed. It’s almost like she’s run out of empathy for young and hopeful people who have yet to fall in love …and has fallen out of love with romance in general. I could say the same for the lacklustre The Pursuit (2002) where the plot is more family drama than romance - about how a family has unfounded objections about a girl’s choice of husband because of some contrived problematic long-ago behaviour.

There are some better post-2000 books but this makes me genuinely afraid to work my way through the series, let alone her full post-2000 backlist.

I won’t go into much about the characters here because describing them would make them seem consequential to the book and/or JL. They certainly were not.

Bought this at a used book store this past weekend. Now I have the whole Reid/Locke Family Saga.
Book 1 The Heir - Duncan MacTavish & Sabrina Lambert (Sabrina's Aunt Alice is a friend of Ophelia's Mother Mary Reid)
Book 2 The Devil Who Tamed Her - Ophelia Reid and Raphael Locke (Ophelia was engaged to Duncan in the Heir and Raphael escorted his sister Amanda to Duncan's grandfather's house party)
Book 3 A Rogue of My Own - Rebecca Marshall & Rupert St. John (Rupert is a first cousin to Rafe)
Book 4 Let Love Find You - Devin Baldwin & Amanda Locke ( Amanda is Rafe's sister)
The first two stories are about the "Mean Girl"Ophelia and the underdog Sabrina and the Good Character of the two leading men; Duncan MacTavish and Raphael Locke.

Review I Liked:

Loved it.

Not worth it

I want to start out by saying I read this book for the first time several years ago when it was new on the shelves. I was maybe 11 at the time I don't recall, but I do remember thinking the book was very Good and I enjoyed it. So when, years later, I stumbled across it in the kindle edition I thought it would make a great re-read. I couldn't have been more wrong; and I can only attribute my thinking this book was good to youth and I may have exaggerated it in my memory. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME reading this book. I cannot stress that enough. The heroine is Sabrina, however the story is more focused on Ophelia reid (the book series is even called the Reid family). This thoroughly annoyed me. Sabrina is portrayed as unattractive but curvaceous and witty. Her "wit" reads very annoyingly and nonsensical. Also, her character is very weak. She is basically a doormat for everyone in the book, including the hero. He uses her to cheer him up before miraculously falling in love with her, Raphael Locke uses her to relieve his boredom, Ophelia Reid uses her to secure an invitation to summersglade and as a gopher to deliver letters. Overall, her character was very irritating, boring and unbelievable. The hero was not much better and reminded me of an affable buffoon. He seemed not to think of anything, such as storming into Ophelias room or leaving when he realized she wasn't properly dressed. He was very immature and seemed unable to think independently. As for Ophelia; I felt she was a huge cliche. The too pretty mean girl. I got so tired of reading how stunning she was and how she was the most gorgeous woman in creation. Overall this book was very boring (took me about two weeks to read!) I thought the plot was ridiculous, and very slow. The main characters didn't meet each other until several chapters in. I felt no real chemistry between them. No depth to the plot at all, no character substance. The hero just wakes up one day and realizes he's passionately in love w. The heroine. I thought Sabinas family scandal incredibly stupid. I felt like this book was written by a very inexperienced author when I know Johanna Lindsey can deliver amazing work. However, this is not one of them. Save your money and time on this poorly written book.

This was an enjoyable book. It was a different type of book for Lindsey but had her familiar and enjoyable writing style. I was getting a bit worried because it seemed like it took a while for things to get going between Duncan and Sabrina, and Ophelia was annoying the heck out of me. That's why I put it down...for quite a while. An online reading buddy encouraged me to continue it and I am glad. It was a comedy of manners and dealt with the machinations of Duncan's grandfathers to get him married off so he could give them great-grandchildren and to see him settled. It also showed how silly society can be. The feted beauty Ophelia has the personality of an ugly crone, yet Sabrina, who is considered plain, is the nicest, sweetest, most interesting person you could know. Unfortunately her marriage prospects are nil because of family scandal (which is really silly when you read what the scandal is). I would not say this is the best Lindsey book, but it's a good one, and it won me over in the end. Read it when you want to read a book that's Austenesque but is written by Johanna Lindsey.

Though the series is named as Reid family presumably after Ophelia Reid, she is not the heroine of this book and plus she’s also the only child to her parents. So I wonder why this series is named as Reid Family. Considering that the next 3 books are members of the Locke family, I think that the series should be renamed as Locke Family. Reading about her extremely negative characterisation in this book, one wonders how the author is going to redeem her. But well....that happens in the next book in the series.
In comparison to the average age of most of the hero’s in historical romances, In this book the hero is very young. Duncan is said to have just turned 21.
The highlight of the book is the interaction and banter between Duncan’s grandfathers Archie and Neville.
The second half of the book had a lot of twists and turns before leading to the HEA.

REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS

This novel should have one of those taglines underneath the title. It would read like this:

Did you know that if your friend rapes you in a coach, you can't get pregnant?

Because that is actually the central premise of the book. And it's not even the MOST ridiculous thing about the book. All the characters behave in ways that no human being has ever behaved. They have to keep explaining WHY they did or said something, since it all makes absolutely no sense and otherwise the author probably would lose track of what's going on. The only thing that isn't explained and re-hashed at least 5 times is the no-pregnancy-rape thing. Neither of the parties involved explains why they never consider for even one second that there might be a bun in the oven.

I wish I could give this -5 stars. So bad it actually hurt my brain, and I am not saying that in a snobby way because I enjoy a good, 'dancing at the ball with a handsome Duke' story as much as the next woman. It was just so silly and contrived. Why did I read it then, you ask? Well, I found it in the book trade bin at work and I like to read sometimes if I'm just grabbing a quick lunch at my desk. At first it seemed cute, but then, the incredible awfulness of it became kind of fascinating and I had to see how it ended. (Badly.)

Have you ever wondered what would happen if present day reality TV and bratty teenagers lived in the Victorian era?
Yes?
Then this book will definitely solve that riddle for you.
"The Heir" is the story of Sabrina and Duncan.
Plain looking Lady Sabrina is from the dukedom, yet past tragedies have made her an outcast and an amusement in the eyes of the ton. When she is invited by the gorgeous Lady Ophelia to be a houseguest before she gets engaged to her "barbarian Half Scot fiancee", she neither expects the former to be extremely catty, or to fall for the man herself!
As circumstances force Duncan and Sabrina to spend time together, we see a spark ignite. However, self centered Lady Ophelia loves attention and does not like anyone raining on her parade.
What follows is a LOT of drama.
This honestly felt like a YA historical romance. The characters had a lot of growing up to do- so did the villains. There is enough gossip in this book, evil monologues by the spoiled ex fiancee, a kind to-be-best friend, argumentative sweet aunts, meddlesome grandfathers, strong Scottish brogue, beta hero, kind and happy go lucky, sensitive heroine, vindictive scorned women and some kidnapping drama.
A historic 90210, if I can call it that!

This is a good story with a funny and witty heroine, a self centered beautiful foe and a "barbarian" from up north in the highlands of Scotland. Duncan finds that he is to be the heir of an English Marquis and has to merry and get down to having heirs of his own. This is an interesting story of how he comes to find his wife. This is a cute story that is a fun read.
