This series just keeps getting better and better. Maybe it’s because the characters become better known to the reader with each book. Whatever the reason, I love all the characters, particularly Taylor and Cate. On top of being great family drama, there’s always a mystery to be solved. Of course, dogs too! Still love Diesel, but Brandy now holds a place in my heart!
Book 3 in the Hart's Ridge series took us back to the small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains. In it we catch up with Taylor, her mom Cate and her sisters and find out how life is treating all of them. This series has a bit of everything to make it fantastic -- family, forgiveness, romance, suspense and secrets. Plus two of the main characters are dogs - both Diesel from the previous books and Brandy, a mistreated dog that Cate 'rescues'.
Cate is looking for a job and Taylor agrees to take her to a local Christmas tree farm that is hiring workers. When they get there they find three dead bodies. Homicide is rare in Hart's Ridge and a triple homicide is unheard of. Taylor vows that she will find out who murdered these people in the town she loves. She and Shane spend many hours working together to try to solve the crime. At the same time, Taylor is dealing with issues within her family. Her mother has just returned from prison where she was wrongfully incarcerated and is trying to learn to live life as a free woman She would love to establish a relationship with her daughters but isn't sure if too much time has passed. Also, Taylor's sister Lucy has a small baby but insists that she wants them to live on a houseboat. Taylor knows that Lucy is keeping secrets and worries about her and the baby. Plus there are two men who are beginning to have romantic feelings for Taylor and she is uncomfortable at the thought of allowing any romance into her life because of incidents in her past.
This book ended with a lot of threads hanging and that will be resolved in Book 4 - Borrowed Time. Will Taylor find her happily ever after without changing the person that she is, will Cate be able to establish a relationship with her daughters, and will the entire family be able to reconcile for the future and put the past behind them?
Hart’s Ridge, by author Kay Bratt, is now my very favorite new series! In My Life is the third book and I swear they just keep getting better with each new release. Taylor Gray, the main character, is a deputy on the local police force. In these stories, her job of investigating crimes and solving mysteries are all based off from actual true life crimes that have happened. I believe that makes it all the more interesting. In this book, she has a triple homicide to investigate and the killer will really surprise you. On top of that, she’s also dealing with her very troubled family and trying to look out for not only her 3 sisters but also her alcoholic father and her mother who has just been released from prison. Kay has also included a rescue dog into the storyline and with the dog comes a possible love interest. What a crazy yet fulfilling life Taylor has! The more I read, the more I’m drawn into all these characters lives and I can’t wait to read more. I’m finding this series very addicting and I can’t recommend it enough. I’m anxiously waiting to read Borrowed Time which is next in the series to learn more about this quaint little town and all the residents who live there including more about Taylor Gray and her family.
Oh, I love Kay Bratt and her books! She is one author who can turn her hand to so many genres! In this series alone, you're looking at small-town fiction, romance, family drama, and mystery. And dogs! As always, Taylor Gray is one of the main points of view, back in her police position, investigating a triple homicide in their town of Hart's Ridge, as well as mothering her siblings, all whilst having her real mother back on the scene. Oh, and a tingle of romance occurring in more than one place, too! I love learning more about Taylor, and each of her siblings, hoping that a future book will delve more into their stories. The murders are the main opening point of the story. However, they do not overshadow what I feel is more important, and that is how Kay explores different relationships within the story. It was great to learn more about her mother and her backstory, as well as get more of an idea about Anna and her life. And how can I forget the dogs? Diesel is a key character, as always, but we might have a new regular in the form of Brandy! Can't wait to read more!
IN MY LIFE is Book 3 in the fantastic Hart’s Ridge series by Kay Bratt. I loved the first two books and couldn’t wait to pick up where Book 2, LUCY IN THE SKY, left off. In this story, we are back in Hart’s Ridge with Deputy Taylor Gray and her family. Taylor’s mother, Cate, is living with her after being released from prison where she spent two decades serving time for crimes she didn’t commit. Reconnecting with her four daughters and re-entering society is proving to be a challenge for Cate, but she is working hard and her determination never wavers. As if all the family drama was not enough, a horrible triple murder has taken place in Hart’s Ridge and Taylor is working day and night to help solve the mystery. This story has the perfect blend of true crime and family dynamics, as well as a bit of romance and intrigue. I loved the dog characters, too! As always, Kay Bratt writes a story with wonderful characters that you grow to care deeply for and a well-plotted mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I can’t wait for the next book in the series, BORROWED TIME, and all the ones after that. Thank you to the author for providing an early copy to read and review.
Thanks to my Kindle Unlimited subscription, I have been introduced to a new author and series. I will start book 4 in the series once my Kindle is recharged. The setting takes place in a quaint town which reminds me of the town in Robyn Carr's Virgin River series. This book is the 3rd installment of the small town mystery series. Hart's Ridge used to be such a quaint, peaceful little town but when Deputy Taylor stumbles upon a triple murder, she won't stop until she finds the ruthless killer. She also comes from a dysfunctional family and is trying to put the pieces together of her fractured family life.
I like the small town feeling in the book as well as the characters. I also like how , with each book, I am learning more about them and their issues. I feel like I know them personally. I also like the cliffhangers at the end of the books. They make me want to continue with the series. She has written so many books, that I am surprised I never heard of her.
I love this small town and its characters! A triple murder, Cates new job, a romance brewing and decisions about the future relationships for Taylor. It was exciting and fun with all the dogs (dogs always a favorite part for me). I enjoy seeing the author incorporate some of her own life into this series. If you love a mystery in a small town and love dogs like I do, don’t miss this one!
This is the third book in Kay Bratt’s Hart’s Ridge series. Each book gets better! Deputy Taylor Gray is the only female on the force in a the small southern town of Hart’s Ridge located in the Blue Ridge Mountains. This is a great thriller of a novel. Deputy Gray has a lot to prove in solving the case of an abandoned little girl and finding her mother. Along side Taylor is her seemingly heartbroken rescue dog, Bernard. I love stories that include a faithful dog companion! Fast paced and very entertaining, I couldn’t put this book down and quickly read book two and was given an advanced copy of book three from Kay. Love all three and can’t wait for book four! Highly recommend this series by author Kay Bratt!
Another interesting visit to Hart’s Ridge! I’m team Sam. Diving into the next book! Trying to pace myself so I do t read to fast. I love Taylor’s spunk.
It was another five star book by this author. It’s book three in the series and just as good as the first two. Taylor is involved in a triple murder mystery. Lucy is back home with a son and Cate is still adjusting to life in Hart’s Ridge. It’s a good mystery and has some light romance. It’s a page turner for sure! I can’t wait to read the next one Thanks to the author for the early copy
Welcome back to Hart’s Ridge. Where your friends are waiting, secrets are revealed, a murderer is in the loose, new relationships are formed and healing is happening! I love this series! I love this author! This is book 3 of a series, and you were going to want to start at the beginning and get to really know this town, this family, and your neighbors!
Light read. Picks up from book two but more about Taylor's mother, Lucy a little & Taylor's love life or lack of . Lol Add in new who done it. Over all good read.
Each book in this series is better than the last. That is saying a lot as each is great. They are about a family. A family with lots of drama and some secrets. Some new loves may be developing along the way also. And the dogs. There are some stories about dogs that will take your heart. Both good things and some bad.
Taylor is a cop who works hard. She's always helping others and putting herself last. She lets a few people walk over her at times but I have a feeling it will all work out in the last book. Everything will. I hope. I sure do hate to see this series end. It's been my favorite of this author's books and she's written some very good ones. This book has a lot going on. Family is at the center of all everything. Taylor's sisters seem to need her more than even they realize at times. You get to know their mother more in this book.
Cate, the mother of these four girls. She was wrongfully sent to prison many years ago. She was accused of murder by arson. She spent all that time locked up and very lonely. Not having much trust in anything or anyone. A real loner. Taylor found her and helped prove her innocence. Now Cate is trying to make a life with her daughters. She may just find that special someone also. We'll see. I hope so. She has a love for animals and gets a job at the local humane society. There is a lot of drama there also. Not with the employs but with some of the nuts that come in.
There is a big murder in this book. A dad, son and best friend are killed in cold blood. Taylor and Shane are the leads on this one and won't stop until someone is caught. It is not one of those where you will figure out who did it. You won't. But they might. They work well together but I'm still rooting for Taylor and Sam. I want them to get together.
Lucy is happy with the choices she is finally making also. Her son and her are living on a boat and making new friends. I think she's going to be a great mother. Of course she still needs Taylor's help and her mom, Cate's, love and understanding.
You get to know a little more about Jo and her son also. And just a bit about Anna again. I worry about Anna. I don't think she's in a good place in her marriage. I'm afraid her husband is going to be a bit controlling and possibly a bit abusive. I hope not. We will see.
This book was a fun read and a serious one that made me laugh out loud in a couple of places. One in particular. The word that one man used... "hippa-thesis." If you read or read the book you'll see what I mean. It had me laughing so hard. I could just picture this country, possibly a redneck, man saying that.
This book is great. It has a bit of everything for you. I do hope we find out who hurt Taylor and he gets brought to justice.
Thank you Kay Bratt for this beautiful series and this third book. I am very anxious to read the next one now. Not that I want it to end but it's that good.
Kay Bratt comes through again with the 3rd book in the Hart's Ridge Series. I am really loving this series.
In this book, Taylor's mother, Cate is looking for a job. Even though she has been exonerated, a felony is still on her record so she is having trouble finding someone who is willing to hire her. Taylor has an idea that the people who own the tree farm, just might give her a chance so Taylor drives her over there. When they arrive, the owner's son, is there to greet them. As he goes back to the house, Taylor hears him yell. They find his brother has been shot to death. Then in the garage, Taylor finds Amos (the owner of the tree farm) has also been shot & killed execution style along with an employee who is also dead.
Now Taylor is dealing with a triple homicide. Who in the little town of Hart's Ridge could have committed such a heinous crime!!
Shane's prime suspect in the triple homicide, is the owners other son Danny. He is the one who found his brother shot so Shane's money is on him. Taylor just can't believe that Danny would kill his brother, his father and his best friend. There are other unlikely suspects but they continue their investigation to find a killer.
While Taylor & Shane are investigating a triple homicide, Cate finds a job at the humane shelter. She worked with dogs at the prison so this job is a perfect fit for her and she loves it.
There is a lot going on in this story. Besides the murder and Cate's new job. Against Taylor's advice, Lucy moves into a houseboat with her son, Cate dognaps an abused dog, & Taylor has 2 men who are interested in more than friendship with her. And could Cate possibly find love.
As will all of the author's books, she knows how to keep the reader engaged and wanting more. I just can't put her books down and this one is no different. Each book is even better and I am drawn into these characters.
I recommend this series to anyone who likes a good mystery with suspense, family dynamics, dogs and a little romance thrown in.
When you read this book, there is a link at the end to download a bonus story about Suki and Ian. If you remember, they are the ones that were going to take Lucy's baby. We never really found out what happened to them after Lucy left that hotel. Read this bonus book to find out.
If you love small towns and beautiful mountain settings, you are in for a treat! In My Life is the third in a four-novel series titled Hart’s Ridge mystery series, set in the fictional town by the same name nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. In book one you meet Taylor Gray (the only female Sheriff’s Deputy in Hart’s Ridge) and her dysfunctional father, 3 sisters, and now her (estranged) mother Cate has been thrown back into the mix. True to form, (because if you know Kay Bratt there are always dogs, which I love), Taylor’s furry friend Diesel is back, as well as a new “rescued” dog her mom named Brandy!
This story gives us insight into Cate and her life for the past few decades, her struggle to find herself again, and the longing to be included in the lives of her daughters and grandchildren. In an effort to help her mom find a job, Taylor takes her to the Christmas Tree Farm just outside of town to see if they need help, and stumbles upon a triple homicide which makes Deputy Gray first on scene to yet another brutal murder in their tiny town of Hart’s Ridge. The family affected has been around for decades and is loved and respected. The townspeople are now in fear for their own lives knowing a killer may be in their midst. The pressure is on for Deputy Gray, Detective (Shane) Weaver and the rest of their team to find the person (or persons) responsible for this heinous crime.
I loved getting to know more about Cate and seeing a possible brighter future ahead for her, it’s time she has some more happiness in her life. I must admit I do worry a bit about Lucy and her baby boy branching out on their own, but thankfully she has a good neighbor that keeps an eye out for her. I can hardly wait for book four to come out to find out who (if either man) Taylor chooses to date! Taylor has her own demons from her past she must battle first.
True to form Kay Bratt left with us with another cliffhanger at the end! Since I am not one to ruin the story by retelling it, I will just leave it there. In My Life was an excellent, fast read for me, and I highly recommend it!
In My Life by Kay Bratt is book number three in the Hart's Ridge series. If you love police procedurals, mysteries, family dynamics, romance or anything along those lines, you would love this series. After reading the first book in the series, which is Hart's Ridge, I couldn't wait to read more. I thought book one was great and the second one was better and In My Life was better yet. I highly recommend this series. I can't wait to read more and see where it is headed.
The main character is Taylor Grey. So far each book is about a different crime and a different member of the cast. In My Life is about Cate who is Taylor's mother who spent twenty years in prison after being convicted of murder and arson. I love Cate's tenacity. She works hard to re-enter society and the lives of her children while maintaining her patience. I wanted to be able to hug her so many times.
The case in this new addition to the series deals with a triple murder that takes place on a Christmas Tree farm. Taylor spends long hours tracking down leads and trying to solve this murder. For a case that seemed unsolvable, I loved where the clues actually came from. I think you will too. It is quite ingenious.
Kay Bratt does an awesome job with her character development. She also does a great job of leaving you wanting more. The first four books in this series are coming out in quick succession and I understand there will be four more but they will release with more time in between. I am not sure how I will handle that. I love diving into a series and binge reading. At this point, I am so engrossed in the series and the relationships, I am sure I'll be waiting impatiently for more. Give this series a try. Until next time…Happy Reading!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is book 3 in an addictive series set in Harts Ridge, a small town full of interesting characters. It's predominantly a mystery series with a true crime element; with the main character having a complicated family relationship with her parents and siblings. The book has some romance in it, too.
Taylor Gray is the main character in this series. Now a Deputy, she's looked after her family her whole life since she was a teenager. Her father is an alcoholic and her mother spent 20 years in jail until she was exonerated. This book starts when her mother is released and is trying to pick up the pieces of her life.
Taylor is still looking after her sisters even though they're grown women with children. Lucy has turned up with a baby, Jo is back with her teenage son, and Anna looks like she has it all with a rich husband and 2 well-behaved children, but is she really happy?
At work, Taylor is trying to solve a triple homicide alongside her old friend and colleague Shane; made more difficult in that they're interviewing people Taylor has known all her life. Shane also wants more than a work relationship. In her private life, she's trying to work through the complicated position she finds herself in when she finds the real owner of the dog she re-homed. Can she give Diesel back to Sam? Moreover, can she ignore the feelings she's starting to have for Sam?
It's a book with many angles, and it keeps you guessing to the end. I really didn't see the ending to this one coming!
Whilst each book is a standalone story, the books are best read in order of publication to preserve continuity of the characters and wider storyline. I'm binge reading the series from the start.
When Art Imitates Life. This deep in this particular series, you really need to read the first two books in the series - which are both excellent, btw - in order to fully understand all that is going on here... and to avoid major spoilers from each of those two books. Once you've read those books, you're going to want this one on hand anyway, as it picks up shortly after the events of Book 2. Once again, the crime being investigated is one Bratt had heard a similar tale of in her real life, and once again (as is so often in Bratt's writing), those who have paid attention to her for in some cases not long at all will notice other details of her life making their way onto the page. In a glancing reference here, we get a reference to a child currently living on Maui, as Bratt's own youngest daughter currently does. But much more interestingly, there is a minor plot point here - that helps build into something that could become much larger - that those familiar with Bratt's postings on social media from just a few months ago will be all too familiar with. To be clear, while the character here pursues the more criminal method that Bratt was *tempted* to do in real life, in real life Bratt did in fact pursue numerous *legal* methods of achieving the same result. Her socials are worth perusing for that story alone, for those that also come to enjoy her fictional work. :) Overall another solid tale that expands the world while also keeping the "freak of the week" episodic nature of the series intact. Very much recommended.
In My Life is the third book in Kay Bratt's charming and delightful, yet suspenseful Hart's Ridge series, and my favorite to date. In this book the reader gets to know Cate Gray better, a loving mother, unjustly punished for murder of her young son and arson. Cate is trying to get to know her 4 adult daughters and become a part of their and their families' lives, in the case of Jo and Anna. The story begins with Taylor Gray, Hart's Ridge sheriff deputy, coming upon the horrific murders of Amos Higgins, owner of Hart Valley Tree Farm, his son David and Carlos an employee. The tree farm is one of the area's largest employers and the victims respected residents of Hart's Ridge; Taylor is determined to find the killer/killers ASAP. As if this isn't enough for Taylor to deal with, her free-spirited and impulsive sister Lucy, returned from NYC with baby Johnny, and is living with Taylor as is Cate. In My Life captured my full attention and my heart from the first page to the very last word. The Gray women are strong yet vulnerable and each has endured many challenges. They are family in the truest sense of the word and Kay Bratt brings them to life through this book. An absolutely wonderful read. I received an ARC of In My Life; it in no way influenced my review.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Wow another wonderful book that I've read in the Hartwell Series. This third installment "In My Life", takes us back to the small town. The author pulls us into a murder/mystery crime, Taylor is back with us investigating, at the same time as she's busy with her family. Being family isn't always easy. The book also brings together the characters that we've already met. In this book we get to know more about Cate how she's doing everything to get a turn in her life. Lucy is also making changes in her life. The new characters, the storytelling unravels very nicely and one does feel to be a part of their town and lives. This story is so inspiring to read, there is a bit of everything including dogs and rescue. The secrets are certainly well kept and the book was hard to put down, the more I read the more I wanted to know. What else can I say, this book is simply a great story and one just wants more! I can defintely recommend this book! I'm grateful to the author giving me the opportunity to read this book too. I'm eagerly awaiting the next opus in this series! Thank you Charlotte N
Cate's Rebirth With Ellis! 4.30/5***** Spoiler Alert!
Deputy Taylor was helping her vindicated Mom, Cate, settle back into civilian life by job hunting, when they were first on hand to Amos, David, and Carlos' brutal executions. Once again, she proved to be a better investigator than Det. Sean, as she followed her gut and followed up on info obtained from retired IRS Agent, Iris who placed psycho Smiling Chipper Dayne at the Higgins Tree Farm triple murder, unlike lazy Det. Sean/ Shawn. She removed Danny from the suspect list and helped mom settle into her new Vet Tech job. Mom stole Moxie as she and Ellis, both loss loved ones, try to rebuild love and life and Moxie. I hope she does not pay for stealing/ rescuing abused Moxie. Lucy and Johnny is an ongoing silly side saga, who buys a boat to live on with their teething baby, that does not trust nor like them, leaving her much needed support behind. Ah Lucy..A very good read! I hope Sam and Diesel dog join to make Taylor the deputy/ cop she wants to be.
I didn't think this series could get any more stressful or intense. Boy, was I wrong. Kick it off with a triple murder and you've got some serious stuff going on—Taylor's life just got kicked into high gear! The whole community is on edge and will be until the killer or killers are apprehended.
One of the things that I absolutely love about this series is not only the fact that there is a puzzling crime to solve, but there is also the personal side of Taylor and her totally dysfunctional family. I love getting to know all of them and every book gives me a deeper understanding of each person. The drama of the crimes and the drama of family. Gotta love it!
The Hart's Ridge series just keeps getting better and better and I'm so excited when the next installment is available. Book #4, Borrowed Time, is coming out April 11! This is series you don't want to miss. I highly recommend In My Life, as well as this whole series. I know you will be looking forward to more stories, just like I am.
This series just keeps getting better and better with each book Kay Bratt writes. The first words of the first one pulled me in and the excitement doesn’t quit. Each book has a mystery to solve, and we learn ever more about the Gray family and their interactions with each other. Cate is looking for a job, Jo and Anna remain a bit mysterious and standoffish, and Lucy just continues to be Lucy; while Taylor is still trying to protect everyone. Oh, how I admire Ms Bratt’s storytelling ability and her characters. She always has strong women at the forefront. A doozy, the mystery in this read affects the entire community. I couldn’t even venture a guess at solving it. I wanted to know the conclusion but I didn’t want the book to end. Highly recommend
I read this book as an ARC and wish to thank Kay Bratt and the publishers for the opportunity. The ideas contained in this review are strictly my own.
Book 3 in Hart’s Ridge continues with the lives of Taylor, Lucy, and, Cate. This series draws you in immediately and doesn’t let go. A renowned family of Hart’s Ridge is struck with a triple homicide. Taylor is focused on solving the case even if it means working with a man she once liked, who took the job in the department that she wanted. Can they work as. Team for the greater good? Lucy loves her family but makes a bold statement of independence by moving her and her infant son onto a houseboat. Will she always have to live her life looking over her shoulder? Cate is cautiously dipping her toes into a life of freedom. Her kind nature draws folks to her. She builds the foundation of a new life with a modest but gratifying job. I love these characters and feel very vested in their lives. I really love how Kay shows us their thoughts and reactions so we really know them. I am ready for further journeys in Hart’s Ridge.
The third book in the Hart’s Ridge series easily climbed to one of my favorite books - ever. The series takes the reader to Hart’s Ridge, centering around Deputy Taylor Gray, her family, friends and everyone in this small town. There is a murder mystery to investigate, which is interesting and definitely complicated. Also, the complex relationship between Taylor and her parents and sisters is gradually more deeply examined. The reappearance of her mother, Cate, and her acclimation to the world around her, is intriguing and disclosed with compassionate care. I have felt this with each of these books and book three is no different, it is now my favorite of the series. Kay Bratt writes with great empathy for her characters, an eye for the intrigue of a murder mystery, and a heart open to the possibilities that await her characters. Now, I impatiently await book four! Absolutely and highly recommend this book and the others in the series. Brilliant, simply brilliant!
In My Life is the third book in the Hart’s Ridge series with the strong protagonist, Deputy Taylor Gray. She stops at nothing to solve this crime of three deaths in the sleepy town of Hart’s Ridge where not much happens until now. There are many suspects and not all is at it seems.
Taylor has her own issues to resolve with her family who have been dysfunctional because of their upbringing when her mother was imprisoned after the death of her son and Taylor’s only brother. Taylor tries to keep her family together against all odds while trying to do her job and find love herself.
The author continues the saga of the family of Taylor and her sisters as they struggle with their own demons while they try to survive each day. Will they ever forgive their mother and give her a chance to get to know them.
Each book tells a story about the sisters and what they have endured with Taylor at the helm of each story.
I found this to be an enjoyable series and look forward to the next book.
In My Life is the third book in the Hart’s Ridge series by Kay Bratt. Life has a new normal for Taylor Gray as her mother, Cate, adjusts to life on the outside, and her sister, Lucy, and infant nephew, Johnny, fill the house with activity. When a triple homicide is discovered, the once quaint and peaceful town of Hart’s Ridge is shocked and frightened. Taylor is determined to find the cold-hearted killer. Is the killer a passerby or someone closer to home? As it becomes all hands on deck, Taylor must juggle her investigation with the repairs of her family and two men who want to win her heart. Will it prove to be too much for Taylor? Or will she finally have the life she always thought wasn’t possible? Kay Bratt has another great series filled with heart pounding suspense and family drama. In My Life is a thrilling story that kept me on the edge of my seat! Once I started, I could not put it down. I was able to read it in a few hours as the story kept getting better and better. There’s so much to talk about but can’t because of SPOILERS! The investigation was engaging and the storylines for Cate and Lucy were heartbreaking and I cheered for them to find their footing in their new lives. I also enjoyed Taylor and her possible romances. I am rooting for one particular man and I’m looking forward to seeing which one Taylor will ultimately choose. I highly recommend the Hart’s Ridge series and In My Life
In My Life is available in eBook
