Paranormals left for dead, parts of them missing. When bodies start piling up, the agents of Paranormal Investigative Service quickly realize the killings aren't random and they are escalating.
Life is never dull as an agent of P.I.S. but Tristan James didn't expect his fourth week as a newly turned phoenix shifter and federal agent to be spent hunting for the person who was dissecting paranormals. If that weren't enough, he was also moving in with Maddox, his partner at P.I.S. and he had it bad for him.
Maddox Smith was going monogamous. If that weren't shocking enough, Tristan was also moving in with him. Add to that the man of his dreams was still getting used to being a shifter and getting over old prejudices about their kind. Taking it slow was never in Maddox's vocabulary before, but Tristan was worth the wait. A new case was exactly the distraction he needed.
They have to work quickly to stitch the pieces together if they want to stop the madman hurting their kind.
I'm a born and raised Floridian who loves to travel. I married my high school sweetheart, we have three awesome kids and one crazy dog. I love all things Ireland and visited twice! Reading is essential to life and writing is an extension of that. If my books can make you laugh or give you that tingly feeling in your belly I've done something right!
The odds were higher in this book, and so was the interest I had. I liked it better than the first book, and I felt like we got more closure at the end of this one than the first one
The couple's relationship has definitely gone up a notch and I like that they are both taking it slow and jumping right in. It made for a great dynamic and allowed their friends and family an opening for some harmless teasing. Which is another things I liked, we get a bit more family in this installment as well.
The heart of the case was very similar to book, but the details that made this one different advanced the world-building in a way that I appreciated. Still hoping for more details about an origin point, since it's been made clear that paranormal/shifter/fae folk are relatively new to the human world ... and the prejudices, racism, and tensions between the communities are obstacles to maneuver personally and professionally. However, while I wouldn't exactly call them chill yet, I'm happy to see that there is a bit of an understanding between the human police and parahuman agency now that Tristan and Maddox are working together. They are going in the right direction, at least.
The 2nd part of the book was unnecessary and from a different perspective that subtracts from the story. That part could have been summarized or the info discovered through the investigation instead.
Okay, so. Same exact issues as the first concept manuscript, maybe a little worse, then you get to the ~25-ish percent that got a bit better but was like.. still not great, and then the super rushed ending.
Basically, the whole thing is another mess that needs to be completely redone. It needs to be taken from concept to actuality. Like, is anyone ever going to mention WHY Finneas is hated so thoroughly by Maddox? It’s not just that he’s Fae, and everyone knows it. Also, does anyone want to explain why everyone is suddenly terrified of the L word when they basically said they knew they were mates? I won’t say any more than that, because I don’t do spoilers.
A N Y W A Y..🙃
To recap in a slightly less confusing way—the confusion is to be expected at this point—we will say that part one was slightly worse than the first concept, part two was weird and unnecessary but slightly better than the rest, and part three was like one slightly extended epilogue that moved entirely too fast and with too little substance. The ending was abrupt, but I’m not surprised with the mood the pacing set throughout the book.
Good grief…
Again, 2.5/5, rounded up because the potential is still there, and I’ll still be tuning in for “book” three. I’m obviously a glutton for punishment. Y’all, please get some developmental editors and people who will be honest with you and fix this series.
its well developed characters, well plotted storylines, rich world building
Rating: 4.5🌈
Stitched Under Fire takes place relatively close to the ending timeline of the first book, Faeted Under Fire. That’s where the formerly human Det. Tristan James died, becoming reborn as a phoenix shifter and federal agent in the Paranormal Investigative Service, aka P.I.S. Yes, the series has a sense of humor.
He also gained a new perspective on paranormal beings he’d been phobic about, gained a partner and boyfriend in fellow Agent Maddox Smith, half orc/half Fae.
We dive back into their world where Tris has become acclimated enough to consider his new Agent Pod/group friends and he’s moved into a house with Maddox, getting ready to met the parents.
The authors do such a great job in creating the paranormal experience for Tristan James. He’s new to everything so we get to see and learn about it along with him. Honestly, the human side pales a bit by comparison.
Tristan is thriving even if he’s at level one with regard to his shifter abilities and new identity as a phoenix shifter. The fact that phoenix shifters are rare means that even his own teammates and boyfriend aren’t exactly positive about what Tristan can do , other than the vaguest ideas.
O’Conner and Lyn are on a slow path here with Tristan’s shifter transition. I’m not sure how many books they have planned for the series, but at this point, for Tristan to gain full access to his phoenix abilities, it will be at book 10. But oddly, the cases become so big and the victims so important, that Tristan’s shifter journey can safely be relegated to a lower storyline status without hurting the character or the book.
It becomes all about the characters, the relationships, the realness of their lives and the pain of their loss. That’s what we feel as does those investigating the cases.
The side storyline about , Tallie, the young teenage prostitute who’s basically family, Maddox’s mom, and Silas, the Fae father , is heartwarming and a wonderful element that helps ground Tristan in this new world and relationship.
This book and series is one I’m enjoying so much for its well developed characters, well plotted storylines, rich world building, and expanding new information into the exploration between human and paranormal phenomena and physicality.
Bring on book 3. I’m highly recommending this and the series. Read them in the order they are written to understand the events and character development.

4 stars (8/10), 💥💥💥 This book definitely delivered much more on the Tristan and Maddox front, and not only their relationship, but also with Maddox's mum and dad, and with Tallie too. I found the structure of the book interesting, and I did appreciate getting to see the storyline from the perpetrator's POV as well. The investigation in this book was a little less interesting, but the book definitely made up for that with all of the plot with our two MCs. I still would like to see more world-building though, especially in the case of Tristan learning about his power, how he can use it, and some of the mishaps he may get into because of it. I also found the banter between the two MCs a little jarring, not because it was poorly written, but there are definitely moments of angst, both spoken between them and internalised, and I don't think those moments were transitioned out of well enough for me to tell if the banter was light-hearted or it came across more cutting, and so I spent a lot more time second guessing everything they were saying because I honestly couldn't tell how each of them would react. Is Maddox getting tired of only being known by his past actions, or is he also joking around? Is Tristan self-conscious because he isn't sure if Maddox actually takes them and their relationship seriously, or is he just jokingly rolling his eyes and snarking back. It is hard to tell at times, and I kind of wish those insecurities were either dealt with more head-on, or it was clearer how they felt. Otherwise, I quite enjoyed this book and am looking forward to where things go in the next one.
I LOVE THIS SERIES! The first book had human cop Tristan becoming a phoenix and learning about the paranormal side of the world and working with his new partner the hot ogre/fae man-whore Maddox. In this book Tristan and Maddox take their relationship outside the office to a new level while trying to find out who is harvesting organs from various paranormals. The banter between Tristan and Maddox is hilarious. This is one heck of a paranormal cop buddy/medical crime drama that I absolutely loved.
2.5 ⭐️ The lack of an in-depth plot and too many grammar mistakes distracted me. We also have to suspend belief that a pathologist has enough training to simply attach several new organs in his daughter’s body over a few days, in the bedroom of someone else’s house. Does that means that anyone with some medical training can do transplants - known to be quite complexes and long surgeries that require a big number of people in the surgical room?
I’m loving this series. Paranormals and humans living side by side but remain separate. I love the interaction between the agencies. Absolutely loved Marta and Silas’s storyline. Can’t wait for book 3
I loved everything about it. The partner dynamic grabbed my attention right off the bat and i loved how their relationship though “quick” seemed so natural and they make each other better at home, with family and on each case they work. All while working to join the human and fae communities and police forces.
