Intorno al fuoco: Fiabe e storie della terra dei sami
Renne e fuoco, per i sami le due cose più preziose. Le renne domestiche li occupano di giorno, sono una risorsa preziosa ma al prezzo di lavoro e fatica. Il fuoco è l’amico che al calar del buio li riunisce nella tenda, al riparo da tenebre, animali selvatici e pensieri maligni. È calore dell’intimità intorno al quale vecchi e giovani si siedono al sicuro ad ascoltare le storie della loro tradizione. Così ogni sera la renna, il cane, la volpe e perfino la zanzara e il pidocchio tornano ad assumere un significato mitico, le malattie parlano e hanno sembianze umane, i bambini morti tornano in vita. Onnipresente è la figura sciamanica del noaide, uomo o donna che sia, mentre a dar corpo alle paure dei sami del Nord compaiono i Ciudi russi, terribili briganti loro nemici storici, e a spaventare i sami del Sud ci sono i contadini, gli stanziali assetati di terra in antico conflitto con i migranti. Nemico è anche Stallo, ma l’ingenuità e la goffaggine di quest’orco malvagio venano d’ironia le storie di cui è protagonista. Emilie Demant, artista danese affascinata dal folklore dei sami, durante i suoi lunghi soggiorni nelle loro regioni raccolse le narrazioni di "Intorno al fuoco" direttamente dalla voce di coloro che tramandavano questo sapere ancestrale. Erano gli anni tra il 1907 e il 1916, prima che la vita e l’economia dei sami subissero le profonde trasformazioni del secondo dopoguerra, e questo resoconto del viaggio nel loro immaginario collettivo conserva tutto il sapore dell’immediatezza e della verità che hanno le trascrizioni dal vivo.

📖 Emilie Demant Hatt raccoglie in questo libro i racconti ascoltati dalle voci degli stessi sami, grazie al tempo passato nelle loro regioni, riuscendo a illustrare il profondo sapere ancestrale del loro folklore.
📝 Questo è stato uno dei titoli che ho recuperato poco tempo dopo la sua uscita nelle librerie. Il fascino che ho per le regioni dell’estremo nord dell’Europa è indescrivibile e questo libro non ha deluso le mie aspettative. Suddiviso in parti diverse, possiamo dire “per argomento”, il libro raccoglie le storie e le leggende tramandate oralmente. Ho trovato molto interessante la scelta nel mantenere alcune parole direttamente dalla lingua Sami (unica “pecca” del libro la scelta di inserire un glossario alla fine invece di note a piè di pagina che sarebbero state più comode, ma alla fine è una cosa soggettiva quindi nulla da dire) e questo ci permette di avvicinarci quanto più possibile all’atmosfera e alla sensazione di essere seduti proprio intorno al fuoco e ascoltare le storie direttamente con le nostre orecchie. Credo che le mie preferite siano state quelle sugli animali, che da sempre sono grandi protagonisti delle fiabe. Animali parlanti, orchi malvagi ma tremendamente goffi, malattie parlanti e briganti sono i protagonisti indiscussi di queste leggende e racconti, raccolti sapientemente dall’autrice.

Iperborea ci ha fatto dono della traduzione, per la prima volta in Italia, di 70 tra storie e leggende del popolo dei Sami, dei quali la cultura è ancora troppo poco sconosciuta.
In particolare, questa traduzione si rifà alla raccolta della danese Emilie Demant, che, all’inizio del XX secolo, ha avuto l’opportunità di trascorrere svariati mesi a contatto con questo popolo e ne ha trascritto le storie, che venivano narrate oralmente intorno al fuoco, appunto.
L’aspetto che mi è piaciuto di più è il tono “colloquiale” che è stato mantenuto nella trascrizione e nella traduzione, dando al lettore la piacevole sensazione di ascoltare la narrazione direttamente dalla voce di un Sami.

Interesting book, but wish it was set up differently. I think I have preferred the explanations with the folktales themselves. Actually if the book was read “backwards” with afterword first one have more background of tellers.

Vi leggo questa breve parte (ovvero un raccontino, è una raccolta no?)
Non vi dico il titolo.
Una volta un ragazzo doveva portare insieme a Stallo (tipici orchi cattivi della Svezia) un sacco pieno di monete. Ma poi riuscì a fare in modo che Stallo portasse il sacco e anche lui. Alla fine giunsero a un burrone e il ragazzo propose di sedersi a riposare un po' con le gambe oltre il ciglio, come su una panca. Stallo era un po' stanco e si sedette volentieri. "Siediti un po' più in fuori", disse il ragazzo, "starai più comodo!" In buona fede Stallo si sedette proprio sull'orlo del precipizio. Ma a quel punto il ragazzo lo spinse con tutte le sue forze e Stallo precipitò giù e morì. (Lì vicino c'era nonno laser, ah no)
Poi il ragazzo se ne andò col sacco di monete.

però bruttino che il titolo spoilerasse:"Il ragazzo che uccise Stallo"

allora. io sinceramente l'ho preso per la copertina, per il formato troppo carino del volume (sue me) ehhhhhh, nulla. ho letto qualche racconto a mamma e mi ha detto che sono stato un coglione a comprare un libro solo per questo (real) però dai è cultura no? ora so che cose si raccontavano i sami attorno al fuoco del kote agli inizi del '900, e poi, dai, mi sono sempre interessate le popolazioni del nord europa
PS: i sami di queste storie sono misogini e cristiani e considerano le donne "impure" quindi nulla, jokes on me che speravo fossero avanti decenni rispetto al loro periodo.

Una raccolta di storie molto interessanti, presentate in capitoli per argomento dei testi ( esempio racconti sulle renne fortunate, sugli spiriti della malattia,Fiabe etc).
Il libro è stato scritto alla fine degli anni 10 del secolo scorso e già allora la cultura Sami, a quanto pare, stava scomparendo. Per questo è stata creata questa raccolta.
Non conoscevo per nulla la cultura Sami, ma grazie a questo libro ho acquisito qualche informazione in più. I racconti sono per lo più molto brevi e frammentari, ma permettono di capire gli aspetti più rilevanti della cultura: paure, riti, religione, credenze, vita quotidiana.
Lo consiglio se volete leggere qualcosa di veloce ma non volete allo stesso tempo immergervi in un immaginario diverso dal nostro.

Le fiabe nordiche Iperborea sono sempre una coccola - questi racconti, letti davanti alle luci dell’albero e sotto la copertina con tisana dell’avvento, lo sono stati nella maniera più totale. Scoprire il folklore di quei popoli che tanto amo, immaginarmi nelle loro terre, visualizzarmi le creature temute e collocare tutto nel loro assetto culturale è stato magico e curioso. Che Bellezza.

A unique trove of Sami folklore, legend, and myth. Ms. Demant Hatt was an artist and self-taught ethnologist, who learned several of the Sami dialects to an exceptional degree of sophistication. She needed no interpreter, as so many others did at the time, providing us with a clear, nuanced view into Sami life, through this and her other works, which I intend to read now.
I can only hope the interpretation into English is as thoughtful (as it appears to be). On that note, Sjoholm provides extremely helpful contextual notes on the process surrounding this book’s creation, including on Demant Hatt’s striking original linocut art.
As a woman, she had greater access and paid more attention to the stories and lives of Sami women and children, which strongly colors which and how stories are told. Some new stories are uncovered, and some more traditional stories are provided new focuses, including the points of view of clever, agentic women and girls.
Quite a few of these stories will be familiar to us as archetypes—Cinderella, Pandora, stories about outwitting large, rich, dumb ogres (Stallo, here), etc., but all with a particularly Sami POV. Interesting but not as surprising as the below.
I was shocked to see a myth so closely related to Odysseus and the Cyclops, “The Sami Man Who Got Away from Stallo in a Billy Goat Skin,” that there must be a connection. We literally have a cannibalistic one eyed giant keeping a man captive. The clever man blinds his captor and escapes by hiding away in the skin of the Stallo’s favorite animal. It’s surprisingly similar, right down to Sami Odysseus being petted by the blind giant, bragging in his hubris, and the angry cannibal ripping up the landscape to throw at our escapee.
I would love to read more about the connection here—I don’t see anything else in this collection so close to Homer.
Anyway, this is entertaining, well researched, put together, illustrated and translated (twice), and all done with care and a particular POV that I don’t think we’ll ever have access to again.
EDIT: Also I love reviews for books like this complaining that the stories don’t end the way that the reviewer thinks they should. Hey hey hey! That’s the difference in ~**~culture~**~

Great Collection of Sami Folktales, Highly recommend reading this alongside With the Lapps in the High Mountains: A Woman Among the Sami, 1907-1908 to paint a more solid picture of things mentioned in that book.
Also can recommend this book for reading in short stints, maybe on public transit, before bed etc. It's sectioned so that stories that pertain to similar themes are put together and overall makes the anthology flow very well.
My Favorite two short-tales in the book are The Pike Fish and the Snake and The Shoes Sewn from Human Skin these have both stuck in my head over the past few weeks and I don't think they'll be leaving anytime too soon.

Un libro di fiabe piuttosto diverse da quelle tradizionalmente proposte da Iperborea. Infatti, questo "Intorno al fuoco" mette in luce non solo alcuni personaggi o credenze del popolo dei Sami, come il personaggio di Stolto o i misteriosi Sami del nord, ma mostra anche una crudeltà nel raccolto che si traduce anche uno stile molto secco e diretto, molto lontano dal classico andamento da fiaba, ma che mostra in pieno tutte le falsità e gli attacchi (purtroppo anche fisici) che il popolo sami dovette sopportare a lungo. Molto interessante è anche la storia di Emilie Demant, un antropologa "quasi" per caso, e che visse molto tempo insieme al loro e che le permise di raccogliere le storie esposte in questo libro.

A fascinating, albeit dense, collection of Sami folktales. I really enjoyed the stories of women and girls because it gave a fascinating glimpse into the lives of women in a culture I know very littler about, but, according to my Ancestry DNA results, I am a product of on my maternal side.
The back portion of the book was written by the translator and gives a wonderful context of life amongst the Sami back when these tales were collected (at the beginning of the 20th century).
If you’ve had your fill of the usual Nordic legends and folktales, and are looking for something new, give these a try.

I wish I would have read her other book first to give this book some context, but this book was the one selected for our Nordic book club. The stories were odd and disturbing, but I read most of them (skimmed a few). The Afterward section of the book was very enlightening and explained much of the symbolism and backstory of the folktales.
I plan to read With the Lapps I the High Mountains next, with a better understanding of the hardships and prejudices the Sami people endured; which then gave rise to these folktales.

Hatt began researching for this book in 1908 through her organic curiosity towards the Saami people and her love of folklore. She was not an academic anthropologist but one through real life experience. This ethnography of folk stories is so meaningful as it is the first documented one centering women & children's perspectives.
Something particularly beautiful to me that I will hold forever; the Saami tradition of Joiking. In my heart.

La lettura è molto piacevole, le fiabe sono corte e contengono parole della lingua originale che, come descritto nel prologo, non sono facilmente traducibili.
L'unico peccato è la struttura del libro: sono presenti delle note sulle singole storie in fondo al libro, ma da nessuna parte è indicata questa sezione. Perciò ci si ritrova a leggere tutte le fiabe e le favole e solo alla fine ci si accorge degli approfondimenti.

June 22, 2024i’m really glad i took my time with this. i will always enjoy reading folktales, and i think the afterword was particularly insightful. i've been interested in learning more about sami culture and found this a really accessible starting place. the illustrations are also gorgeous and a definite highlight.

I am re-reading this since I'm traveling to Sweden soon and wanted to learn more about the native Sami peoples' mythology. I love folktales and this is a lovely compilation of stories that differ a lot from the old stories you'd read from more familiar places.

pretty good, only a few things i wish were a bit different: 1) the afterword should have been before the sections of folktales and legends, as it provides a lot of much-needed context for the rest of the book. definitely read that before you read the rest of the book. 2) some of the untranslated words like "stainak" and "Halde" i think should have been explained before the field notes, i didn't know what they meant until i read the field notes and so i didn't fully understand what was going on in the folktales/legends that were related to or involved untranslated words like that. 3) some of the legends were worded kind of clunky? it might just be a translation hiccup but it made those a bit harder to understand too. besides that, very interesting read :3

Learning about the Sami people and culture was interesting, but many of the stories in this book are unsatisfying. Some barely get past the "once upon a time" set up of a folk tale before ending abruptly with a 2-sentence resolution, with the ending feeling very much more accounting what happened (even if supernatural) rather than feeling like the ending fit thematically with the intro.
