Despite the large number of saloons and ever-changing population, Joe and Faith were comfortable living in Idaho City. They had a nice home and hoped to raise Sam and Katie in the town even after the gold was gone. But those expectations were dashed when a sequence of unrelated events forced them to leave Idaho Territory.
After Joe accepted a new job, the Beck family traveled to Utah Territory where they bought a ranch outside of Ogden. As the family adjusted to their new home, Joe and Faith hoped it would be their last.
But even as they settled in, Joe’s new position required him to spend days away from the ranch. Days in which he would create new enemies, including one who would invade their new home.
Most biographies start with birth and then roll through the years as they drift by but that would bore me to death, and I lived through it.
The interesting part of my life began on September 23rd, 1995 as we were driving back to Omaha after watching the Notre Dame - Texas game in South Bend with relatives. The #21 Irish beat the #13 ranked Longhorns 55-27; and in a real oddity, scored points in just about every way conceivable in the game of football. They scored touchdowns on passes and runs, kicked a field goal, intercepted a pass for a TD, returned a punt for a touchdown and even added two points for blocking a Texas extra point.
As we were driving along westbound I-80 somewhere in Illinois in our Jeep Cherokee, I absent-mindedly rubbed the left side of my neck under my chin.
My very astute wife asked, "What's wrong with your neck?"
Now I had been an Air Force medic for twelve years; and as evident in my descriptions of outlaws' agonizing deaths in my stories, have a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. But that knowledge is offset by being a guy and thinking that we all live forever. My neck lymph nodes had been enlarged for around three months when my wife asked that question.
I obfuscated as if I was a lawyer and replied, "Um, a few weeks or so." (Note: Twelve or thirteen weeks does qualify as a 'few' weeks if one chooses to be generous.)
"And what did the doctor say?"
"I'll ask him when we get back."
"Yes, you will."
I do not want to make my wife out to be a harpy or a nag, because she is neither. She's an incredibly patient woman who could only put up with so much stupidity by yours truly.
Three days later, after the doctor copped a quick feel of my lymph nodes, he said, "I don't know what it is, but I don't like it," which was an honest, albeit an imprecise diagnosis.
So, we trotted over to a local ENT specialist. She didn't like them either and took me into surgery a few days later where she yanked one out, so the lab could dice it and slice it, then look at it under a microscope.
The pathologist who looked at the cells through his microscope reported his findings as 'lymphoepithelioma'. That meant that it was a secondary tumor and there was a primary tumor somewhere else in my nasopharynx that was the original problem.
Back I went into the operating room where the ENT doctor did an extensive examination and found nothing. She was so sure of her reconnaissance of the back of my throat that she told me that the pathologist was wrong, and it was just a lymphoma.
Now, being a computer geek, even way back in the dark ages of the internet in '95, I did some searching and found that if the primary tumor wasn't found, then the survival rate plummeted to about a fifth of the already lousy survival rate for the advanced Stage IV cancer. My wife and I decided that a second opinion might be a good idea.
Off we went in her Jeep to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as the lousy weather descended across the Midwest. It's been known to happen, you know.
They had a problem getting the doctor here to release the specimen she'd yanked out of my neck, which I thought was odd because I don't remember selling it and figured I still owned it. Anyway, they eventually got the lymph node, did their own peek and confirmed the pathologist's diagnosis.
It wasn't until Halloween in 1995 that they finally found the original little bugger. It was just a tiny bump in the back of my throat that must have been there for a long time before it sent its friends marching into my lymph nodes.
They wanted to treat the cancer there, but I opted to have it done in Omaha and was sent to the care of Doctor Patrick J. McKenna (a name you may recognize from Max). Doctor Mac was the perfect man for the job as he was very personable, optimistic, had a good sense of humor and wouldn't put up with my constant whining. It helped that he knew his job, too.
What a ending to the Joe Beck series! What a amazing author! I'd write a lot more words if I could get the tears to stop. I've read every book by C.J.Petit, enjoying each one, some even twice, but this one slammed my soul hard. What a gift this man has managed to give to us readers even as he continues to deal with his own health! How I wish there was a way he could hit that 100 books written count, not as a goal perhaps, but as a legacy. Thank you for the wonderful hours lost in your western's!
A great exciting and heartwarming series. Author C. J. Petit should feel proud of Joe Beck, the hero he created and brought so vividly to life.
A truly rousing series of the old west and the many people who were part of taming it as those lawless times came of age. I read each book and eagerly waited to begin the next one. They were that good! What more to say of young Joe Beck and the 15 year old girl named Faith he bought with hard earned money after seeing a sign hanging around her neck that her father was selling her for $25 because he could no longer afford to feed her. The story only got better from there as they traveled behind a wagon train over thousands of miles of the Great Plains. Love blossomed and the years passed. Joe Beck and Faith made interesting reading as they married and raised a family. C. J. Petit handled each book with insight and plain great writing.
It has been a long time since a book has rocked me like this. I think it is largely due to the fact that I have been slowly but surely working my way through this series over almost a year. I’m very glad that Joe Beck lived a full life that reflected how good of a man he was. As with many people, cancer has greatly affected my family, multiple times. The last chapter had me sobbing like a baby. I hadn’t thought about a lot of the aspects of the loss that occurs, but once I was thrust into that mindset, it was a rough road. I’m grateful for Mr. Petit and the work he has put in over the years. I’m sure that it must have been difficult to reflect on some of the hardest portions of living with cancer while writing this. Please continue to write on Mr. Petit. You will always find a reader in me.

I have read every book written by C.J.Petit and always enjoyed them. The Joe and Faith series has been inspiring to follow. The story line was rather unbelievable until you realize that the intent was to portray human character, strengths, and love, not just tell a story. I admire reading a book that develops the character and allows them to have real human traits that real people can relate to and still have an infesting story line that is not only exciting but makes one anxious to want the story to continue. I shed some tears at the end, mostly because I still miss my wife but also because the characters had become so real to me. Thank you Mr. Petit for giving of yourself and your talent, I appreciate it.
In book nine, the final book of the series, we bounce around quite a bit between the highlights of Joe and Faith's adult lives.
The author goes out of his way (I think) to make sure there aren't any requests for more Joe Beck books. Yes, it's sad and a wiped a tear or two away, but it does provide closure. We see their children as they grow and get married before having kids of their own.
The last book reminded me a lot of the final season of Parks and Recreation. Just like in the show, we fast forward to key parts of Joe's life as a marshal and then something else.
I'm going to give book nine 5/5* even though I don't think it deserves it. Then again, it was a great, heartwarming series and I'd hate to mar it by marking the final book down. The book gets 5/5*, and the series gets the same.
What a well written and entertaining set of stories that wraps up the incredible Joe Beck series. From the beginning to the finale you thoroughly entertained me. I have set a personal goal to read every book you have written as you have become my favorite author. You continue to bring the characters to life in such a manner that I find it hard to put your books away as I want to see what happens next. Thank You Sir for providing an old man with so many hours of entertainment. I also thank you for being such a prolific writer and pray that you can continue to entertain your fans.
I accidently found Mr Petit awhile back. I have completed the whole list of his books and can't wait for more.
This was a culmination of the final years of a very special man. Joe Beck was special at 16, along with his also special wife Faith, becomes a legend in old west.
The story is very well written. The characters are vivid and exciting, both good and bad guys. Old small issue I have is the bad guys also seem to be fairly 'dumb'.
Mr Petit has a way of bringing me along in the story, I feel like I am there and part of it. Good stuff.
Would definitely recommend This book. It was one of the best he has written. Tear jerker and all. If you don’t want to cry don’t read it. Takes a lot to make me cry in a book but the end totally broke my heart. He was such an awesome person for a young man to accomplish all the stuff he did was amazing, made me so happy for the two of them to get married. Just couldn’t stand it for him losing his pets, I am an animal lover from waaay back, I lived it all over every time. Nothing ever came before my pets & horses, when I lost my last horse (he was 28) I just layed down and died with him, never got another. I know how he felt when the snake got his dog. Was sorry to see the series end, never be another like this one, really deserves more than a 5 *
This is the single most moving book i can ever remember reading. I started reading ,obsessively, at 3 years old, and have never stopped. I'm now 75 and have read most or all of the great westerns. Even considering Louis L'amour, this particular series ,and especially this book, have been one long magnificent experience, culminating with and sweeping over the top like a tidal wave end with a gentle, sweeping, ripple. I loved this book. I have never written a review before.
I have enjoyed everyone of C.J. books about Joe and Faith Beck. What a wonderful series it would make for TV. Of course if only they truly followed the story line. I must admit a few tears were shedded on the last book. I’ll be reading all seven again in a year or two. I have now read all of CJ’s novels and haven’t been disappointed with any! Looking forward to your next book, please don’t make us wait long to read about your next hero. Thanks for keep the old west alive in our minds and hearts.
If you have not read the entire series of Joe Beck, you need to do so. Even though each book can stand alone, this is the most awesome series I have read in my 74 years. Joe and Faith began their life together at ages 16/15 on a westbound wagon train. Through the books you see the amazing lives they lived together. This last book is written very well, it covers a lot of situations but moves very timely. C J Petit is a master writer. Thank you Mr Petit.
CJ. Petit is an Excellent Author, who has written some real Classics for his Western Book Fans, like me, and Thousands, Hundreds of Thousands, and more than I can count, sincere !Fans of his Westerns. I’ve just Completed, “The Passing Years” which is the Last Book of what is known now as, “The Joe Beck Series” and it was excellent!!! The Characters seem like part of my Family and are as well-loved… l really didn’t want to see the series end, but then everything must end I guess… Best Wishes Mr. Petit
While I knew the inevitable end to the amazing stories of Joe and Faiths lives, I still enjoyed reading about the final exploits of the two and their amazing life's journeys, throughout the wagon train days, to their final home in Ogden, Ut.
I love C.J. Petits style of writing and I am always looking for books I may have missed reading, or seeing a new one coming out for publication!
I do believe I have read all his books, but enjoy reading them again, if I discover I have already read it!
I enjoyed the the Joe Beck series very much as I have all of his wonderful novels. I had previously read the 1st 5 in the series and really enjoyed the last two. I know that our passing is part of life but reading about our heroes doing it is very sad whether it's a single novel or a series. I have said it before and I think it will be that way and that's to say he has spoiled me for other authors and only read his novels. When I finish one then I start on the one at the bottom of the list on my Kindle.
This series was totally amazing, there is not one thing I would change, I have every book written, by you and have read most 3or more times . I shall miss Joe and faith and shall probably read this series again very soon. Can't wait for your next book, probably harder but I hope it's another series, keep up the excellent work, I anxiously wait for your next book! I am a 72 year old women that just reads.
Well you finally made me cry i have enjoyed everyone of your books ive read which i will admit has been most of them but the joe beck stories are my favorites ive already read them at least 3 times the ending was a real tear up but i thank you for hours of reading your stories my husband is going thru dementia and reading is a way for me to have a little space i am waiting for what comes next im sure i will enjoy it to Sincerely karla Colwell karlagc63 @gmail .com
I'm afraid to admit that I am in tears as write this. I fell in live with Joe & Faith Beck. I'll reread these books many times. They have been an inspiration for enduring love through trials and happy times. I hope that every one who read this series is as much in love with them (the books) as I am. I have enjoyed every book I have read of C.J. Petit. I'm so happy that I found his books. I've read them several times but this Joe Beck series is my favorite.
C.J.Pettit has got to be a wonderful, deep loving person to be able to compose novels such as he does. I felt, actually felt, the love from book one clear thru the series. I finished this last of the series with a lump in my throat and tears running down my face. No author has ever came close to touching my heart like C.J.Pettit has done. God bless you c.J.
You know how to finish a great story. All the courage and love, that can be in a loving relationship, you delivered it all.I have read all your books and will reread them again. I love the way you write and put us right into the story with all your characters. God Bless your talent and your love of family. You will stand with the best of writers. Thank you for years of enjoyment.
I hated to see the end but the way that you had Joe and Faith come to an end had me in tears. The love that they shared is such a great example of a husband and wife and the relationship they should have. I know that you have struggled with health issues and I can’t believe you could get through Joe’s story. This book shows your heart and it’s a good one. Loved it!
Thank you so much for taking the time to finish Joe’s story. I know that the ending was either hard or cathartic as it echoes your own story. I cannot say how much I have enjoyed this entire series plus so many of your other books I can only say that you have left a legacy of stories that point out that living a life of service to others can lead to fulfillment and love.
Another great example of how America was built by the strong men and women who lived through it’s birth! I loved the sad but beautiful ending of joe and faith, and have nothing I disliked. Therefore I recommend anyone reading this book and the ones preceding it in its series therefore I have to go with a five star rating. Hats off to the author for a job well done.
The story had to come to an end but like all C J Petit books was full, complete with all things necessary to hold focus till the end with action, good character, perfect romance, full life and reputation. I hope Mr. Petit has more books left in him. He is in my prayers and thankful for his writing.
This series has been, for me an example of the best of western writing. It keeps your attention and your sense of adventure. The characters are all great and interesting. The only bad part was having to wait for the next installment.Thank you for your writing and the hours of entertainment you have given to us
I never thought reading one of Mr Petits books would move me to tears..but his version of Faith and Joe's passing moved me to tears. These books may be historical fiction but the love story told about Joe and Faith in this series of books is phenomenal! Thank you Mr. Petit
This is one of the best series I have ever read.I feel as if the characters were part of my family and when I came towards the end of the last book I cried which as a older man I don't do often. C.J. Petit doesn't just put words in a book he has you living the story as if you were there.
I couldn't write this review last night couldn't see though my tears. So this am iam going to miss joe and faith since they were fiction I did not pray for them. I will miss them for sure they felt like my best friends along with Bernie etc. Thank you C J for a great series
One of your best. My wife and I have been married 70 years in October. We will also both turn 90. We have both said many times we would love to do it all over again. That depends upon the Lord when we are both together in heaven. Thank you for all your great western. Ray White
I know that, in an earlier written review, I complained about poor proofreading of some of the books in the series, but this final book seems much better. The saga is finalized in a moving and well-done way and satisfactorily closes out a very readable western series! Def- initely a 5 out of 5.
I was surprised, then not surprised with Faith choosing to join Joe. Such an exciting and beautiful love story would make a super movie! For those of us that love stories about U S Marshalls and how they tamed the wild West, Mr. Petit gave us a new hero and a great American family!
