Who the #%@& writes a memoir when they're in their twenties?! Then again, are there rules anymore? mommy issues captures the tumultuous journey of self-discovery that often troubles the youths of (way too many) small towns in the middle of nowhere. From the realization of one's identity to doing anything and everything to escape that identity, this book delivers an emotional insight to what it's like trying to be a kid juggling these issues along with life's many other hurdles. The author's venture into vulnerability takes the reader through fear, acceptance, realization, toxic household dynamics, death, and lawsuits that can send an entire family tree up in flames. Don't worry, however, the lighthearted lenses the author wears from time to time will leave you remembering that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.
A real & raw coming of age story with a shot of generational trauma. Chase writes in a way that truly makes you feel like you’re right there with him (and makes you hate his mom *almost* as much as he does.) Memoirs have a tendency to be boring and name-droppy, but Chase does an excellent job of keeping the focus on what this story is really about: how a boy lost his mother, but found himself.
