Just back from a tour of duty, all Major Brant Western wanted was a hot meal and a warm bed. What he "didn't" need was the stunning socialite in disguise who'd just shown up at his family's Cold Creek ranch. Scandal trailed bad girl Mimi Van Hoyt--aka "Maura"--everywhere she went. But once Brant discovered her secret, how could he turn her away?
Being stranded in the middle of nowhere in a blizzard was not Mimi's idea of a fun time in the Tetons. Then why was she starting to think this sexy soldier could be more than her shelter from the storm? And the more determined Brant was to protect her and her unborn child, the more she believed that this honorable, irresistible military man was the only man for her.
I'm not one of those people who knew from birth she was destined to become a writer. I always loved to read and throughout my childhood I could usually be found with a book in my hands. To the disgust of my friends, I even enjoyed creative writing assignments that made them all groan. But I had other dreams besides writing. I wanted to be an actress or a teacher or a lawyer.
Life took a different turn for me, though, when my mother made me take a journalism elective in high school (thanks, Mom!). I knew the first day that this was where I belonged.
After I graduated from college in journalism, I took a job at the local daily newspaper and I reveled in the challenge and the diversity of it. One day I could be interviewing the latest country music star, the next day I was writing about local motorcycle gangs or interviewing an award-winning scientist.
Through it all -- through the natural progression of my career from reporter to editor -- I wrote stories in my head. Not just any stories, either, but romances, the kind of books I have devoured since junior high school, with tales about real people going through the trials and tribulations of life until they find deep and lasting love.
I had no idea how to put these people on paper, but knew I had to try -- their stories were too compelling for me to ignore. I sold my first book in 1995 and now, more than 30 books later, I've come to love everything about writing, from the click of the computer keys under my fingers to the "that's-it!" feeling I get when a story is flowing.
I write full-time now (well, as full-time as I can manage juggling my kids!) amid the raw beauty of the northern Utah mountains.
Even though I might not have dreamed of being a writer when I was younger, now I simply can't imagine my life any other way.

I really enjoyed this story of a socialite and an Army ranger home on leave. I liked both the hero and heroine. The hero was a nice man, strong and capable but willing to be open and accepting and vulnerable. The heroine, a rich society type, was shown to be trying to change her life and recover from her mistakes. It was well written and the plot made sense. The end was a bit short but only just a bit. I quite enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading more in the series.
Rancher and Major Brant Western is on leave (but going back to the Army soon) and hearding cows when he suddenly see headlights coming on the ranch and a car crashing in the creek. It doesn't take long before he realize just who he saved. Mimi Van Hoyt, a famous heiress and her tiny dog. The woman pretend her name is Maura Howard and it's not the only secret she's keeping from him. For Brant, the ranch is synonymous with bad memories but for Mimi, it becomes a peaceful haven.
There's some books you enjoy because they're highly entertaining and there's some books you like because they make you feel comfortable and warm like a hot blanket. My first "visit" to Cold Creek Canyon was like that. The heroine's bichon frise was adorable and I like how this journey makes her realize that she was spoiled (she doesn't act like a "little-rich-girl" but it's like she wasn't really aware of her privileges before). Brant was the one she needed. A down-to-earth man who makes her feel safe and cherish.
Really, I do like cowboy stories, present time or old times. But cowboys are not what this book is. The 'cowboy' is in the military and home on leave when a poor little rich beautiful young woman wrecks her rental car near his home in bad weather.
I never knew exactly what the 'secret' was supposed to be, if there really was one. The plot was pretty thin and did not require much thought. Since this appears to be one of the 'cowboys of cold creek' series, maybe the others in the series follow similar lines. There must be a market for these stories, but I don't think I would read another.
The book was an 'exchange' for me in a hotel after I finished the other books I had brought with me. And the cover on my book was different than the one shown with the title and author that I accessed to write my book review.
A popular socialite needs to escape to a client hi to drive it, her rented Mercedes goes flying into a creek. The owner of the ranch rescues her, her dog, and luggage, by wading into the creek in frigid weather. She's pretending to be someone else, Maura, an ordinary person, rather than Mimi, to avoid paparazzi. She needs to stay at his ranch for a complicated reason. The whole time I was reading, I was concerned about her rental to n the creek. Of course, the rest of the story was equally implausible and absurd
Mimi Von Hoyt, little rich girl, has a big scandalous secret she needs to hide. She is traveling to her stepmoms in a blizzard where she crashes her vehicle. Major Brant Western gallops to her rescue. Stranded at Cold Creek Ranch she tries to hide her identity and secret. Brant knows who she is and soon discovers her secret too. Will this attraction grow? Or will they go their separate ways?
I really enjoyed the humor in this book. Brant was a Major in the military. He was back on leave for a little while. He loved coming back to his peaceful ranch, and staying in his rustic cabin when he got the chance to take a break from the military. It was cold, and the snow was blowing. All he wanted to do was go inside his cabin, and sit by his fire. His plans changed, and so did his world when he witnessed a car slid off the road, and fall into the creek. He hurried to save the beautiful lady, and white fur ball of a dog. Once he pulled her from the car, he found out she was wet. he knew it wouldn't take much for hypothermia to set in. Being in the military he was a trained combat medic. He knew what he had to do. He had to get her wet clothes off, and get her warm. He would rather disarm a suicide bomber with his teeth than undress a semiconscious woman, but he didn't have much choice. It wasn't until she woke up, that he took a long look at the lady he saved. He was shocked to find out Mimi Van Holt, a stunning, very rich socialite was laying on his floor by the fire. This would be a story for his army buddy's.
Mimi's world had also turned upside down, and she needed a place to lie low for a little while. she talked Brant into letting her stay at the cabin, and she would clean it for him. the two had me laughing throughout the story. this was a fun, lighthearted read, with romance, and humor. Brant was 100% a military man. Mimi had grown up in the tabloids. She felt she couldn't go anywhere that someone was not snapping her picture. I loved the way Brant got the media circus off his ranch. It was perfect. The end of the story warmed my heart. This book is a keeper.
This is the first book that I have read from RaeAnne Thayne's extended book series, "Cold Creek Cowboys", and it won't be the last! Major Brant Western is on a leave of duty from his military tour in Afghanistan. Settling in at his snow-bound family ranch in eastern Idaho, Brant looks forward to peace and privacy, and a chance to heal from the recent battle deaths of several men under his command. His solitude is shattered by the spectacular car-crash arrival of socialite-in-disguise, Mimi Van Hoyt. Seemingly a paparazzi princess who delights in scandalous and newsworthy behavior, Mimi stuns Brant by calling herself "Maura Howard" and acting nothing like a spoiled socialite. Soon Mimi/Maura and her little dog, Simone, have both charmed and disarmed Major Western--and he wouldn't have it any other way! This man and woman both have issues going back to unhappy childhoods, and neither of them is really quite how they first appear to each other. They genuinely like one another, and a mutual attraction begins to build heat. Can they overcome their obvious lifestyle differences, and the secret that Mimi holds so dear, and find the love to last a lifetime? A true "protector" hero, and a very appealing heroine make this a most enjoyable romance read. I so looking forward to meeting the rest of the "Cold Creek Cowboys"!
Can a character probably based on Paris Hilton find love with a Brant Western, an Army Ranger? Under the skillful hands of RaeAnne Thayne, the character, Mimi Van Hoyt does find love with Brant in a believable story. Trying to escape her life after finding out she is pregnant, Mimi has come to Cold Creek to see one of her many stepmothers who lives at Western Ranch. She is driving in a bad snowstorm when she skids off the road and into a creek. Western rescues her and her dog, Simone. He realizes almost immediately who she is but she gives him a fictitious name and soon finds herself cleaning his house as he says he wants to sell it.
When the press descends upon his home, he defends Mimi and her right to privacy. Brant goes back to fulfill his tour of duty while Mimi pretends she will return to Hollywood. You find yourself rooting for the two of them to get married and have a happy ever after life.
My Opinion: Cute, clean and fun. It was a sweet story of a socialite that changes her ways because she is pregnant. She wants to clean up her act and I for one liked that she wanted to change and develop. After all she had been given everything all her life and now she wanted to change for her baby. It was a sweet story of love. I enjoyed Major Brant and his delicate way he had with her. It was a sweet romance. It was not overly dramatic. The story flowed smoothly and was written well. It moved along at a steady pace and I enjoyed it. I give A Cold Creek Secret by RaeAnne Thayne 4 of 5 stars.
Well Written Harlequin/Silhouette Style Contemporary Romance. Recommend.
I only discovered the author, RaeAnne Thayne, a few months ago but I I have enjoyed her books and purchased several for my ‘keeper’ collection. So far, this and the other books of hers that I have read were very well written and entertaining. Her books have good characterization and usually have themes about overcoming hardships or tragedies and finding a place to belong and discovering good friends as well as true love.
This book is a traditional Harlequin/Silhouette style of contemporary romance. The hero and heroine were warm, compassionate and extremely likeable and the story was engaging and held my interest. There were no sex scenes and no profanity, for those who care about reading only clean books.
Readers who dislike the Harlequin/Silhouette books will probably not enjoy this book. I like variety in my reading and sometimes I am in the mood for the well written, lighter H/S shorter length books, which are quick reads, but nonetheless enjoyable. Anyone who appreciates the traditional H/S format will likely enjoy this and other books by Ms. Thayne.
Mimi Van Hoyt's known for her ditziness in and around Hollywood and other elite sites. But when she drives too fast and ends up in a ditch in the middle of a snowstorm, it's Major Brant Western, on leave from his military work in Afghanistan, to rescue her and her teacup Bichon frise.
It becomes clear that what Mimi tells him about herself is mostly lies, but he goes along when he knows he'll be going back to meet up with his buddies soon. And when Mimi realizes he knows who she is--but not that she's pregnant until that, too, becomes evident--she decides she needs to leave, if only to protect him from the papparazzi who continue to hound her.
Months later, when Brant comes home again to recover from additional injuries, he discovers that Mimi is in his house and what happens next may create a present out of the future he'd only dreamed about. But will she go along?
Kinda liked it and kinda didn't? This felt like a short, easy read and took me months to finish. I kept putting it down and forgetting it :/
The romance was okay and the characters were okay. Mimi got jealous and jumped to conclusions over nothing, which is two things I am not too keen on in my heroins tbh. Also - the name just felt silly. Maybe that's because English is not my native tongue.
Also - really thought this was gonna be Christmassy, but it takes place in February. This is completely on me, since the book has no Christmassy vibes on the cover nor mentions the holiday on the back. Dunno what I was thinking. There's a lot of snow tho.
Still loving the series, and am gonna read the rest. Considering skipping to Christmas books because time of year indicates that this is ok.
I was happy with the first book, but the second one wasn't as good. I was wondering why because I thought they were both written by RaeAnne Thanye, but they didn't have the same style. It wasn't until I was finished with both that I saw the authors were different. The second book was ok, not great.
Brant and Mimi discover things are definitely not always what they appear and sometimes opposites do attract. Mimi discovers a whole new world and way of living and Brant learns that it is okay to accept help. This is a wonderful and clean story. The narrator does a great job.
Socialite Mimi is in another life crisis. She heads to a ranch where her favorite ex step mother lives for solace, ending up in a river in a blizzard! Rescues by Brandt a soldier home on leave. I wonder if they’ll fall for each other? I liked her renovations of the ranch house- a little weird she’d change her whole personality in 3 days… enjoyable!
I loved the Mimi character. When you think of current (2018) socialites, she’s not really a woman who reminds you of the Kardashians or others. She’s down to earth.
Great book - loved Mimi! Such a great story line! Fell in love with Major Brant Western myself - so Mimi had no chance of resisting. But what a journey to finally get there! Loving the stories of each of the "Four Winds".
It's honestly a bit boring. The Mimi the socialite runs away as if there's actual danger to herself or her baby and it's just a danger of embarrassment. Brant is an interesting lead, but he doesn't get much to work with in Mimi. It's not a bad romance, it just bored me.
This is the kind of romance novel that makes you sigh in wonderment. One of the best romance novels I have had the pleasure of reading. I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next, and there are plenty of cliffhangers that will leave you salivating. Here’s a bit about the novel:
Mimi Van Hoyt desperately needs to talk with her ex-step mother. However the timing couldn’t be more inconvenient since she finds herself caught in the midst of an Idaho snow storm. She crashes her car into a creek where she is basically knocked unconscious. Lucky for her Major Brant Western is home on leave and sees the accident. What he thought would be a relaxing week off from duty turns out to be a rescue mission. He pulls Mimi from the wreckage and as the snow keeps falling they are forced to take shelter with each other in Brant’s ranch home. The last thing famous socialite Mimi wants is for her identity to be revealed, especially under the circumstances she is in. She takes on the identity of Maura Howard hoping that nobody will recognize her. The last thing she wants to be known for is the silly socialite the tabloids portray her to be. With plenty of careless antics she has found herself caught in over the years she can’t help but to be thrilled at being someone other than herself if even for a short time. Major Brant Western knows all about her real identity, but goes along with her fibs to placate her. What does he care if she wants to be someone else? Their time will be limited, and the story of spending time with none other than Mimi Van Hoyt will make a great story for his army buddies. However forced to live under the same roof they begin to develop feelings for each other. Brant soon realizes that there is more to Mimi than meets the eye. Each person is too stubborn to admit feelings for each other, and there are plenty of obstacles in their way which doesn’t seem to help matters. Will they ever be able to come together, or are their two worlds just too far apart to bring this unlikely couple together?
The story plot is excitingly unexpected. Not your normal romance read considering the two characters being thrust together is an army Major and a socialite celebrity. It was pleasantly surprising, as were the characters. Just when I thought I had figured out the characters personalities something happened to surprise me. For me it was a quick read, mainly because I just could not put it down. I couldn’t wait to see what would unfold next in the plot, and what the characters would do next. The writing style was comfortable and flowed very easily. Everything was easy to imagine, and felt so real. I fell in love with all the characters depicted, and I highly recommend this novel to any fellow romance reader looking for a great read.
Two simple words could describe this novel: cute and clean. RaeAnne Thayne’s A Cold Creek Secret is the seventh entry into the “Cowboys of Cold Creek” series. Although it is not necessary to read them in order, there are reoccurring characters. Mimi Van Hoyt, according to the tabloids, is a rather dim, spoiled socialite who can never do the right thing. After the discovery of a surprise pregnancy, she runs away from the pressure of Hollywood – accidently running her car straight into the creek on Major Brant Western’s property. As they spend the next few days snowed-in, she begins to discover that he might really be as honorable as he seems.
Mimi’s character, while publicly portrayed as vapid, is in fact sweet and sentimental. She enjoys working hard, but has rarely had the opportunity to do so. Her pregnancy, though a surprise, was not an unwelcome one. Her work ethic and her honest self assessment made her more likeable. Unfortunately, while Brant is attractive and honorable (picture a perfect mash-up of cowboy and military officer), there isn’t much character development. I would’ve liked to know a bit more about him, though what I learned, I loved.
As the two grow closer and get to know each other (and their secrets are revealed), they begin to earnestly fall in love. The story unfolded in an unlikely, though plausible, way. I enjoyed reading this simple tale of romance in unexpected places. This is a light, quick read. It’s perfect for relaxing after a busy day. If you’ve read and enjoyed the other “Cowboys of Cold Creek” novels, then you won’t want to miss this one. If you haven’t read them, but are a fan of light-hearted, clean romance, you’ll like A Cold Creek Secret.
Having read one of Reanne's Cold Creek books having discovered they are set in a certain area of America etc and really enjoying it, I decided I should read more of hers. Usually Mills and Boon are not my thing and obviously, they are written in a certain way to a certain formula. However she has also written some non- M and B's too. This one is not quite as good as the first one I read. That had a lovely cosy feel to it but this one doesn't disappoint either. If the reader reads it knowing that it is formula stuff, they won't be disappointed. I have to say that the book is written well and flows very well and the reader is straight into the story and , although, there are times when it is predictable, there are also times when it isn't and , for me, that certainly helps to keep the reader wanting more. However, you do find you want certain things to happen and that's the way it should be. The story, again, is really more about discovering the real person and who they are and doesn't involve any raunchy business and that's why i like it. It is so much more honest and real as a story that way. I look forward to reading more of her books.
I received this book as a free gift from Harlequin, but I liked the cover, so it did not take me long to get around to reading it. Normally, I find Harlequin romances formulaic in format and rather predictable. This book was a bit better than most, maybe because this is the second book that I have read by RaeAnne Thayne. I found the situation that put a Hollywood socialite at the mercy of a random cowboy / army major to be a little unbelievable, but once the plot moved past the initial stages, I liked the chemistry between Mimi Van Hoyt and Brant Western. The two characters were in many ways complete opposites, but they still complemented each other. It was hugely ironic that Mimi became homemaker to Brant's place -- nesting syndrome was kicking in early. I also did not expect the period of separation, though it fit with Brant's military duties. This book was a sweet, quick read that made me smile.
