Astérix #24

Rate this book

My oh my.

The last story written by Goscinny! Fist written in French in 1979 as
Astérix chez les Belges, it was first published in English in 1980.
Chief Vitalstatistix is outraged upon hearing that Julius Caesar has referred to the Belgians as the bravest of all the Gaullish peoples, and immediately sets out for Belgium to prove him wrong.
At the suggestion of Druid Getafix, Asterix and Obelix accompany him, lest the whole venture come to a `sticky end'.
What ensues is compensation between the Belgians and the Armoricans (Asterix and Co) to prove who can bash the most Romans, until Julius Caesar comes to Belgium with his army to intervene.
Our friends get to meet a robust and fiery people not unlike themselves, with curvaceous blond ladies, good beer and masses of good food.
There is a wonderful adaptation of one of those charming paintings by Dutch master, Pieter Breughel The Elder. The English translation uses to very witty effect, quotes by George Gordon, Lord Byron, William Shakespeare and John Milton.

The last comic Goscinny was involved in before his death, and - in my opinion - pretty much the peak of the series. It's all downhill from here.

The rivalry between the Gauls and the Belgian is particularly memorable to me.

One of the best volumes in the series, with funny lines and smart connections. I like how meta the rivalry between the Gauls is, as a reference to both the French and the Belgian being prolific comic creators. There's even a reference/tribute to Tin Tin inserted in the story.
Goscinny, the writer and co-creator of Asterix died during the making of this volume and from that point in the story it starts raining and the skies are darkened.

In this one, Chief Vitalstatistix takes off for Belgium after hearing from a Roman patrol that they like being in Gaul because the Belgians are worse, and they don't mind getting thumped here...enraged, off the chief goes, with Asterix and Obelix not far behind.

The rest of the book involves the 3 Gauls bonding with the Belgians, and competing against to see who is better at thumping Romans.
It goes so far as to ask Caesar to officiate the competition, which angers him immensely, so he leads his armies to crush them once and for all.

Of course, the combined might of the Belgians and our 3 Gauls is enough to stop them entirely.

Caesar is embarrassed, both tribes agree they're equally good at thumping Romans, and a banquet takes place.

Shocker ;)

The last story co-written by Goscinny before his sudden passing—and what a send-off. Vitalstatistix, insulted by Caesar’s claim that Belgians are braver than the Gauls, drags the whole village north to settle the matter. What follows is part culinary festival, part war game, and all-out love letter to Belgian spirit. The battles are epic, the jokes fly fast, and Obelix’s love for Belgian chips might be the truest romance in the series.

I read this one in 2013, with a heavy heart, —not because the jokes weren’t funny, but because I knew it was the last Goscinny story.

There’s a scene where the Belgians and Gauls fight side by side, cheering and laughing in the mud, that felt like Goscinny waving goodbye—not with sorrow, but with joy.

I was in my late twenties, teaching full-time, and this story made me pause, laugh, and then reflect on what it means to leave something behind. What Goscinny left us was more than comics. It was a world.

The Belgian and Asterix's tribe compete with each other to show who is the best? How do they do it? By wiping out Roman camps.

Usual humor and brilliant artwork. Narrative was lacking in some places.

MY GRADE: C plus to B minus (the artwork kept this one at three stars) <.b>

Zgodba me je razočarala. Nesmiseln "bratski" prepir in tekmovanje v kazanju mišic.

I never really have anything bad to say about Asterix comics (apart from a certain someone always been tied up and silenced at the end of every book- my heart hurts a little for him! But perhaps I wouldn't be so if I heard him with my own ears?). I always find myself rather hungry though after reading Asterix! There were two guest appearances in this book which I greatly enjoyed! :)

The last and probably worst of Goscinny’s Asterix books. Belgians are barely caricatured - just declared brave.

Reading this in adulthood is far removed from the hilarity I remembered as a child. Nonetheless, pleasant trip down memory lane.

A kind 2.5 although I think it deserves 2.

This one seems somewhat bland which is a sad thing to say about somebody's last effort. Especially coming after the powerhouse that is Obelix and Co.. The Gauls and the Belgians are too similar and the idea of the competition is not so great. Some of the references to Belgian culture are on the point though (especially the Tintin one!).

Chief Abraracourcix hears an off-hand comment about the Belgians being considered the bravest of the barbarian tribes. A bravery contest ensues. The Romans are not happy. The volume starts slow but evolves into hilarious madness towards the end.
My absolute favorite panel? On page 31, Dupont and Dupond announce:

Grabbed some random Asterix from the library. As usual, the punning is a bit laboured in English... makes me really appreciate the amazing work the German translators did!
