Chaos and Consequences

Rate this book
He's an outcast, occasionally unstable, drinks too much... and unbeknownst to him, he's the galaxy's last hope. Kai Stormbringer, a human with the ability to channel a strange magical force called Aether, becomes a reluctant hero after one bad night forces him to put his trust in a cast of outlandish characters. Against all odds, and sometimes each other, they must put their differences aside to survive seedy underbellies, space battles, and a crazed Galactic Imperium captain hellbent on wiping out the few remaining Aetherials from existence. Chaos and Consequences is the first novel in the Aetherial War series, and will take the crew of the Midnight Crescent on a galaxy-spanning adventure across alien worlds. This is just the beginning of the conflict known The Aetherial War.

This was a fun read!! It feels like Star Wars in an alternate universe. The Aether is similar to the force. I liked how Aetherials who die can transmit their essence into weapons, such as the case with Kai's sword and Lily's daggers. The use of color with the abilities was wonderful as well, giving a visual element to the powers. The cast of characters was brought together well, letting the reader see the universe. The friction between Grimhorn and Tu'Mar worked well, though they seemed to have gotten over it quickly. The relation between created and creator was cool. The book also had the classic Star Wars twist where Kai was revealed to be Lily's father, I honestly did not see that coming!! I would love to see more of their father daughter relationship. Also the reveal at the end where Tobias was working for the enemy was great as well, a good set up for a sequel. I am wondering if the ship has Joren's daughter's essence, like Kai's sword in a way. Something to maybe be answered in the future. I look forward to a sequel!!

If you like Star Wars and Druids.... this is the book for you!

When Kai, a human Aetherial, meets Lilly (another human Aetherial) they embark on a mission to tear down the Emporer's terrible reign. The Emporer has worked tirelessly at committing mass genocide on Aetherials and Kai and Lilly may be the last two in the galaxy. They gather a band of misfits along the way and the witty banter and relationships between the group are a great reprieve from the near-constant battles this group endures.

Fair warning - this book ends on a cliffhanger that leaves you eager for book two!!

The world-building in this book is brilliant and sets readers up to explore even more when the next book comes... which I am eagerly awaiting! I can't wait to know more about each of these characters and I can't wait to see who else they run into on their journey! Nathan Doverspike is definitely the Sci-Fi author to keep an eye on! He has a unique voice and brings these characters and this world to life beautifully!

Character relationships are somewhat predictable but overall great easy read. Very Star Warsy.
