Goodnight Kiss 1

Matt and his girlfriend, April, are plunged into a horrifying world of endless night when they encounter the vampires of Sandy Hollow. April is lured away from Matt when a vampire controls her -- hypnotizes her with his strange, intoxicating kisses. Now Matt must save April, before she gets her final goodnight kiss.

Goodnight Kiss 2

Bill has been to Sandy Hollow before. This summer, he's returning to the little resort town -- but not for fun in the sun. He is searching for creatures of the night -- the vampires who prey on the tourists there. Billy's girlfriend was one of those tourists -- until the vampires killed her. Now Billy has vowed to destroy them all -- even if he must join them trying.

Plus a new vampire story by R.L. Stine: The Vampire Club.

Pete Kelly has left Fear Street and come to a new school -- Forest Grove High -- so he's eager to make friends. Then he meets Nan Garner, a gorgeous girl who invites him to join a club. Sounds good, Pete thinks. Until he discovers the club's terrible secret. And their plan to make him a permanent member.

Noteworthy for including "The Vampire Club," a rare short story that is exclusive to this collection. Actually, this may be the only short story written within the Fear Street universe—someone correct me if I'm wrong. Don't fret if you have trouble finding this 1997 paperback, however, as it was reprinted in 2012 as Temptation which is readily available.

"The Vampire Club" is only a dozen pages or so, but ventures into surprisingly dark territory while dealing with peer pressure and the desperate teenage need for acceptance. The conclusion, though delivered as a punch line typical of Stine comedy, is actually quite disturbing. Not unexpected, but certainly chilling enough to linger long after the book is closed.

Stine writes in his typical bait-and-switch format, where he exploits genre, and indeed the prior two novels in the collection, to lead you in one direction before yanking you to another in a surprise twist. Those who think this style cheesy or unartistic should re-read what many scholars consider the most perfect short story ever written, Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery," and recognize that she does the exact same thing.

While Jackson's story does touch on broad socio-cultural concerns of cruelty and corruption of organized thought (among other things, there is no exact way to read "The Lottery") I believe this "bonus" story by Stine examines many of the same anxieties from a teenage perspective. Stine's language is much more simplistic, of course, but is also instantly compelling and layered to perfection. He might have tried harder to make the end more of a surprise, but that would have likely messed up the pacing which is sensational.

For the many educators out there who teach "The Lottery" every year, this story might actually be a perfect companion piece. How does the author lead you astray, while at the same time foreshadowing the unexpected conclusion? How is the narrator particularly susceptible to the situation he finds himself in? Which events propel the story to its climax?

While I have tepid feelings about Goodnight Kiss and Goodnight Kiss 2, I have mad love for "The Vampire Club" which bumps this collection up to 5 stars. Don't miss out, Fear Street fans!

This is one of those horror books I read in high school. That time, R. L. Stine was my first favorite author, and this "Goodnight Kiss" was one of his books that tortured my heart and soul.

Goodnight Kiss gave me nostalgic vacation and Lost Boys vibes with dialogue delivery that Nancy Thompson would be proud of. Shout out to Todd, a real unsuspecting guy.

Goodnight Kiss 2 got me real good with the plot twist. I couldn't understand how silly Billy was the entire time (and how lucky) but I didn't appreciate the animal drinking. That was gross. I did like that the vampire lore was expanded a bit and their scenes were upped from the first story. You bamboozled me, Billy!

The Vampire Club - I believe this was never fully published and remains only a short story available in this edition? It's completely tragic in its ending and floored me. I would have loved a complete edition geared towards more of an adult horror novel setting.

Reviewed on Lili Lost in a Book

This omnibus has the Goodnight Kiss duology PLUS a short story at the end that I don’t think has been published anywhere else before. It was fun!

---

Goodnight Kiss:

We start off the book with this couple, and we think one character is a vampire, but then there was this really fun plot twist! Then two vampires make a bet to see who can turn a human into a vampire first. I really enjoyed this game Gabri and Jessica played and the way they tried to sabotage each other... it was so fun!

Our other main characters, the humans, are April, her boyfriend Matt, and his friend Todd. Basically, Matt is the one who sees that his best friend and girlfriend are acting weird and he sort of tries to save them.

This book was so much fun! Which surprised me because I'm not super into vampires anymore. But I was pleasantly surprised! (See my full review HERE.)

---

Goodnight Kiss 2:

We start the book off with this character named Diana, who was a real badass, but we didn’t get back to her until the end of the book, which really sucked.

But the person (or vampire, I should say 😏) who is back is April! The plot twist in the last book was that Gabri did manage to turn April into a vampire! So now vampire April has got her hungry sights set on Billy and his friends. Billy’s girlfriend Joelle was killed by vampires last summer and that messed him SO much he was actually in a mental hospital for a year. But now he’s back to hunt down the vampires who killed her. This story should have been interesting, but it just wasn’t. Billy says he came back to kill the vampires, but he did pretty much nothing to achieve this goal! Plus, we get another bet between two vampires which LITERALLY already happened in the first book. Whoever turns their human boy into a vampire wins. We did this already!

The first book in this duology was a lot of fun, so I was really looking forward to this one. Unfortunately, it was not as great as Goodnight Kiss 😞 (See my full review HERE.)

---

The Vampire Club:

This short story at the end of the book is just under 20 pages, so it was a very quick.

We have this kid, Pete, and he is not moving to Shadyside, he is actually moving away! At his new school, he joins this vampire club where they, unsurprisingly, hunt vampires. To join the club, Pete must kill one 😬

This was a pretty good read overall. The plot twist was really cool—I enjoyed that!

The Fear Street connection: I think Pete lived on Fear Street? He definitely lived in Shadyside previously, though.

3.25 stars for the series (reread)

I read this series years ago and this was the exact copy I bought from the used bookstore where I would collect the majority of my used Fear Street books as a 2000s tween reader. Vampires became my favorite thing after I read Twilight in fifth grade and I think I read the Goodnight Kiss books the year I read Twilight, but it didn't make me as obsessed. I enjoyed Goodnight Kiss, but once I read Twilight it couldn't compare for little fifth-grade Sarah. My life was rocked.

Rereading these books was fun. These are definitely Fear Street books that you can read quickly and turn your brain off for. This collection also contains "The Vampire Club" which is a quick and fun short story with a good little twist.

Read this YEARS ago when I found out R.L. Stine made teen books. Having read a few classic of his children's series and my deep-love of vampires (at the time), I certainly sunk my teeth into this one! Even remember buying my first copy at Books A Million. Re-reading it now in my 30s, it's definitely campy, and I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as I did if not for the quirkiness in my personality. If you like old folktales and such about the OG vampire-lore, especially if you like movies like Once Bitten (1998), you're sure to like this.

goodnight kiss 1: this was okay, not thrilling of surprising. you see to much from the vampires in mine opinion. 6,5/10

goodnight kiss 2: this was a little bit better. the end was surprising and you didn't know who killed the people until the end. 7/10

the vampire club: short, not really interesting. 5/10

Forever and always my favourite RL Stine book! Got my copy in primary school, and still read it every now and then! Love the teen vampire universe, and love the summer night setting. Good pacing, fun characters, and I really appreciate the inclusion of the short story at the end of the book.

Some good twists in this classic double headed super chiller from R.L. Stine - perfect timing with Halloween just around the corner. Blood, blood and more blood for the ancient vampires!

I've been slowly making my way through the Fear Street books over the past year. Sometimes I get lucky enough to find a book that has a few of them in one book. However, with this particular one, I almost wish I hadn't bothered reading the stories. I am fully aware that these books are written for a younger audience and I read much of the series while I was still in elementary school. But that doesn't mean I can critique things that are ridiculous in the stories or still provide a valid review.

I don't remember reading these particular books as a child, but I'm sure if I had, I would have probably loved them because they were all about vampires. If there was one paranormal creature I've always had a fascination with, its vampires. However, as an adult, I found myself extremely annoyed by how all of the vampires referred to blood as nectar. It's even more annoying when they are whining because they need nectar. It just became redundant and with the plots already been extremely thin, these were just not good Fear Street books. Let alone being worthy of being a super chiller (or more accurately both are.)

Goodnight Kiss

Matt and his girlfriend, April, are plunged into a horrifying world of endless night when they encounter the vampires of Sandy Hollow. April is lured away from Matt when a vampire controls her - hypnotizes her with his strange, intoxicating kisses. Now Matt must save April, before she gets her final goodnight kiss.

If there is a book that makes you want to bang your head against the wall, it would be this one. Typically I hold these books to the standard of rating that I would expect from my younger self. But I would like to believe, that the vampire fan I was, I would not have been impressed by Jessica and Gabri's constant whining about needing "the nectar." ... Read More

Goodnight Kiss 2

Billy has been to Sandy Hollow before. This summer, he's returning to the little resort town - but not for in the sun. He is searching for creatures of the night - the vampires who prey on the tourists there. Billy's girlfriend was one of those tourists - until the vampires killed her. Now Billy has vowed to destroy them all - even if he must join them trying.

As I went into this book, I was prepared for a lot of eye rolling. After all, the first book had the vampires all consistently called blood "nectar." Which may I say, is such a ridiculously stupid way to refer to blood. It would be fine if it was a phrase one specific vampire used. But they all use it and they all use it all the time. Fortunately, this book doesn't use the phrase as often, but it is still the only way the vampires refer to blood... Read More

The Vampire Club

Sounds good, Pete thinks. Until he discovers the club's terrible secret. And their plan to make him a permanent member.

I'm not sure I could even classify this tale as a short story. At 18 pages, it's barely a few short chapters. Which is sad, because there's actually a pretty good idea behind this. If I had to choose one of the plots from this book, this is the one I wish R.L. Stine had flushed out more. I mean, even when you read the description, it sounds taunting and the truth is, he provides a great twist at the end. But as I said, it's really short and it's a shame, because this could have made a great Fear Street novel.

Obviously, this compilation is a fast read. Although Goodnight Kiss #1 would've bored me a lot if it wasn't for the handsome vampire. R.L Stine knows how to pull you deeper, tempting you to finish it. The author is a widely known thriller with glitter, and so just as when I thought I couldn't continue anymore because the story is so typical that it bores me that's when I realized I already finished part 1 and started reading the next part, Goodnight Kiss #2.

The second part is way better than the first. The twist, that you wouldn't see coming unless you paid attention on Goodnight Kiss #1 is the cherry at the top of every ice cream of the shop they're in. Now I don't want to spoil anyone but dear, the climax is captivating! It made me crave for what's going to happen next thinking that there are only a few pages left! Gosh! And of course, the ending. The ending is hilariously twisted! I kind of shipped the two characters and am really glad that it panned out alright, and then there comes the horror! R.L. Stine never fails to give you that GOOSEBUMPS, and boy was I completely lost on track when I thought the story is a LOVE STORY.

The Extra story is my FAVORITE, The Vampire Club. I can't explain how I laughed and at the same time got very excited and curious at its horrific ending. Questions like, What will happen to him? What will they do to him when they found out? And the everlasting stigma that humans will do anything stupid, vile and outrageous just to please their person of interest. How did R.L. Stine managed to give you all the feelings in just a few pages!?

I give it a FOUR because it surprised me, really, I wasn't expecting any of their ending, and because it made me crave for MORE! Yep, I am unsatisfied, in a good way.

Goodnight Kiss
Your typical vampire story. Nothing special. The rules in this book tend to lean toward the classic Dracula rules (shapeshifting, needing coffins and earth). In fact, it's kind of melodramatic in some parts i.e. calling themselves the "Eternal Ones" and craving "nectar". I did think the idea of a person forgetting their past life when they became a vampire was interesting (or a writer's convenience. I couldn't make up my mind).

Goodnight Kiss 2
This is kind of a rehash of the first one with a bet being the catalyst again, but this time the main character knows about the vampires. It was interesting to hear the first book's climax spoken of with an urban legend feel to it.

The Vampire Club
This short story was better than the other two full length books! A great horror short story.

Book 1- I had loved these books when I first read them as a teenager. It was probably my second fave R.L. Stine series next to The Babysitter , but sadly this one just as good reading it years later. It wasn’t super long or drawn out, but I guess there just wasn’t enough suspense for me like there was in his Babysitter series. It was a little of a slow burn up until the end where all of the suspense finally builds and you wait to see what happens. The ending did save it though with the action and the plot twist. It was a good 3 stars for book one. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Book 2 - The second book was actually more enjoyable than first. It was more suspenseful and eager to see how it would play out next. The ending plot twist was even better than the first book’s. R.L. Stine books are always great nostalgic reads if you read them a lot as a kid. They obviously aren’t as shocking or suspenseful as they were as a kid, but they’re still an enjoyable read as an adult. Overall I give this book four stars since the sequel made up for the first book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I somehow randomly remembered that there was a Fear Street vampire book I read years ago and found this Collector's Edition(lol) with Goodnight Kiss 1 & 2 on half.com. Bwhahahhaha, the dialogue in both books is pretty bad. Blood is "nectar" and that was really painful reading over and over. Of course, the last time I read Goodnight Kiss was when I was about 10 or 11 and no doubt thought it was so good/scary. It was most likely my first vampire book. Before now, I hadn't read Goodnight Kiss 2 and the plot was slightly worse than the first one. I LOL'd so hard when someone on here said R.L. Stine is Stephen King for 5th graders. That's so true and I read almost every friggin' one of his books back then. This book probably deserves only 2 stars but considering it's aimed at preteens/teens and for nostalgia's sake I gave it 3. The short story in the back of the book was far-fetched, but kept me interested enough to read it.

My love of reading started when i was young, and it gives me immense pleasure to provide books to Spread the Word Nevada, an organization that passes them on to children in the community. They are a terrific organization supporting an important cause. If your local I encourage you to check them out. For those living further a field, look in your own community, their may already be a similar program in place. And if not, you can always help start one.

http://spreadthewordnevada.org/

Myself, I go out on the weekends and
shop thrift store and bulk book lots to rescue books and donate them. Sometimes I'll find a book I remember reading when I was young and will read it again before passing it on.

I don't rate these books using my normal scale, instead I give most of them three stars. This isn't a Criticism of the book, simply my way of rating them as good for children.

Vampires aren't really my thing generally - so while this is a pretty solid, classic R.L. Stine novel, it didn't capture my interest much. Especially when today we're getting cool twists on the classic vampire, this feels dull and unimaginative. They are the stereotypical vampires - no sun, turn into bats, mind cloud ability, etc.

It's geared towards the older teenagers, and I feel the writing style should reflect a little more sophistication than those for the tweens, like Goosebumps. Those are great for what they are, but for this book I expected a little more.

I remember liking it more when I was young, so perhaps I'm reading too much into it and for that age group it's still a good read, but I don't plan to pick it up again.
