7.1 Aliens Next Door by Ash Darby
This was a solid episode to open on. It was a bit slow, but the social commentary was really interesting, and frankly, got disturbing by the end. Ng and Orr get some time to interact, and we really establish where they stand together, which was nice. The overarching villain introduced seems really creepy, and I'm into it. That said, this episode really took its time to get going, and it felt like there was something missing for much of it. Jack's absence is noted, and I guess that's the best we can hope for right now. 4/5 stars.

7.2 Colin Alone by Una McCormack
Speaking of slow, how about an entire episode focused on Colin alone, not getting to interact with any characters we care about? I love the concept of this episode, but I think it was a waste of time, mainly, and it could have been done better. Avatar's "Zuko Alone" and "Korra Alone" episodes are excellent, for example; but in those cases, they were episodes focused on main characters we wanted to explore deeper, and integrated meaningful flashbacks. Was anyone asking for an entire hour focused on Colchester's husband without him? I don't think so. And I like Colin, I really do, but without Colchester, he's just some guy. I didn't need this much time spent with him solo. The climax could not come fast enough! That said, I appreciate what this episode was trying to do, but I don't think its ideas were executed great; the ending leaves a sense of loose threads, but I think that's just because things weren't delved into enough to feel satisfying. I think this sort of episode, focused on a side character, should have come later in the season, after we'd gotten reacquainted with out main cast after 4 years. Or just made the Colin plot a B plot, not an A plot for an hour. The final 10 minutes or so are really great though, I have to say. And the actor who has been recast as Colin did a fantastic job. 3/5 stars.

7.3 Misty Eyes by Tim Foley
Be honest, this was the episode we were all really waiting for: Gwen returns, and not just that, but she also gets to meet and confront Ng. And I gotta say... this episode could not have been better if it tried! Foley really pulled off quite a lot in this episode, and it's impressive. We get reacquainted with Gwen and Rhys and see what they've been up to since leaving Torchwood. Ng and Gwen hash out their history. And we get so much character development for Ng, along with learning about her past. The villain was personal and executed so well. Alexandria Riley and Eve Myles give outstanding performances, and I'd love to see them team up for more adventures. I didn't think there was a world where I could realistically believe Gwen would accept Ng in any form, but this episode pulled it off by the end. Ng has grown so much beyond Gwen at this point, and she's a fascinating character in her own right. This feels like a proper continuation or epilogue to the other "Among Us" series, which I think the other episodes in this set kind of struggled with, making this episode stand out in the best way for itself, but that also makes the other episodes in this set look worse when compared, imo. Part of me feels like the episodes should have been ordered differently, as this one really feels, chronologically, like it's first. 5/5 stars.

7.4 Moderation by James Goss
This episode features Tyler and Mr. Colchester, so it should have felt less boring, right? I hate to say that, but I truly was very bored throughout most of this episode. I find Tyler and Colchester so interesting, and their relationship is the best. This episode ignores them and their relationship in favor of a new character to focus on instead. Again, why were Tyler and Colchester not the A plot, instead of the B plot? It's been 4 years; I want to focus on them and what they're doing, not some new girl. The new character, Petra, is actually really cool and I like her, but this episode really set her up to fail for me, because I just wanted to spend time with the characters I already care for. Again, just like "Colin Alone", I think this episode could have been more enjoyable if we switched the two plots in terms of focus, or we focused on a new character so heavily after we'd already been reacquainted with Tyler and Colchester. That all said, the amount of Tyler we got was nice, just not nearly enough; and Colchester was basically another cameo in this episode. Why did Colchester not get his own episode in this first set? It really was a mistake to not give him a larger role in this episode or especially "Colin Alone." Feels like missed opportunities. The Tyler/Colchester scene(s) in this episode was easily the strongest; I wish we'd explored their relationship more in depth after the events of last season, which really set this first episode that features them together up for success, but instead this episode chose not to pick up those plot threads screaming for attention. (I feel like we should have finally seen Colchester thanking Tyler for resurrecting him, as set up last season, but nah. Maybe later, I hope.) This episode has interesting social commentary and a strong new protagonist, but it repeats the same mistakes as "Colin Alone," while not leaning into the Tyler/Colchester dynamic enough, something "Aliens Next Door" did rather well with Orr/Ng earlier this set. The overarching villain crops back up here, but it's starting to feel like an afterthought villain, introduced at the last moment to barely string these anthology stories together. 3/5 stars.

Verdict:
Overall, I'd give this set 4/5 stars. One episode was excellent, one was good, and the other two were just okay. I'd like to see the narratives start to converge and focus on our core cast of characters more heavily, as Ng felt like the only main character (and Gwen and Rhys) who was serviced enough to feel satisfying in this set. Orr was given enough to feel like they were getting some sort of growth, but Tyler and especially Colchester really got shafted. The lack of Jack here should have given more room to focus on all four of these characters in depth, so there's no excuse; and if we're focusing on episodic plots more than an overarching one, we really need to lean into our main characters to make the episodes feel worthwhile. Big Finish does an amazing job with the quality of their sound though, from performances to sound design, to great dialogue in the writing with interesting social commentary, so I can't be too hard on this set. It was a good time, and well done, just could have been more satisfying.

The first four episodes for an imagined seventh season of the TV show, following on from where God Among Us left off with Torchwood dispersing and Jack Harkness leaving the series for good. It’s a little unusual compared with the prior offerings, moving away from the main premise of the TV series, but very much keeping up with its slogan, ‘The 21st Century is when it all changes’. Many concerns of the 2020s are front and centre here.

Aliens Next Door – The opening episode is a slow-starting one, showing Ng and Orr on a stakeout at a seemingly innocuous suburban cul-de-sac. There is detail about the everyday lives of the residents and some chatter with the owner of the house they are using, but seemingly nothing that would interest Torchwood. Things do build up and become more sinister, but it’s only towards the end that we get the explanation. There’s not much of a science fiction element, either, beyond Orr’s presence and reaction to the changing mood on the street. Which isn’t to say that there isn’t any, even if what there is could fit as well in a slightly fantastic spy setting. To be clear, none of this is a bad thing, and it works well, with a slowly building sense of unpleasantness based on real-world issues. But it’s an unusual intro.

Colin Alone – If there’s little science fiction in the opening episode, there’s none at all in the second. Here, we visit Mr Colchester’s husband, Colin, trying to live a normal life as things go increasingly wrong for him. It’s a story of despair and frustration, fuelled by his isolation from the world around him. Is what’s happening fuelled by some science fiction element similar to that in the first episode? Well, possibly, but there’s nothing that couldn’t be orchestrated by someone in the real world if they were determined enough – once again, this feels more like a regular spy drama than anything else. It's well-acted and plausible enough to be unsettling, as well as taking a dig at some of the limitations of our modern reliance on technology, but we’re still in an odd place for this series.

Misty Eyes – The third story of the set is the one that feels most like regular Torchwood. That may partly be because it features Gwen and Rhys, showing us what they have been doing since they left the organisation. But it’s also standalone, unconnected with the larger (and, at this point, still opaque) plot arc. Ng turns up at Gwen’s new home to warn her of a threat that she’s repeatedly vague about… there’s an awful lot of “I’ll explain later”s before we finally get the story out of her. When we do, it’s an interesting addition to that character’s background, as well as exploring the scar she left on Gwen’s life in the previous audio seasons. That there’s a direct, semi-supernatural threat adds to the atmosphere, but the story is really about the emotional fallout from what Ng does and how others come to terms with it. It’s also a good break from an arc that, at least so far, seems unusually mundane.

Moderation – It’s Tyler’s turn in the spotlight as he takes on a job as a content moderator at an online newspaper. It’s probably in this episode that the satire on modern life is most obvious, focusing mainly on online trolling and the algorithm-run demands of social media, but also taking pot shots at Islamophobia and the alt-right. Some of the characters interviewed by the journalist at the centre of the story have clear parallels with real-world figures, which might put some off but, given how utterly unpleasant one of them is in real life, one can’t imagine he has very many fans listening to this. It’s another harsh story, raging against some aspects of modern internet culture, with the science fiction element only coming in at the very end, as we see the plot arc for the season finally begin to take shape.

Remember when Mulder went missing from The X-Files? Yeah...

Episode 1 was great, atmospheric, dark, witty, everything you'd expect from an episode of Torchwood - minus Cardiff. Jack's disappearance was handled a bit awkwardly but I can live with it. Orr and Ng are a devious pair and I am glad they're back. 5/5

Episode 2 was quite dull until the last ten minutes. It seemed like a rehash of Hostile Environment but not quite as good. I understand the original actor who played Colin was not available, and the star of this episode was perfectly good, he just sounded totally different and I didn't really get on with it, sorry. Actually would have preferred Colin be written out to recast. This episode wasn't necessary. 3/5

Episode 3, the one we were all waiting for. Hit all the right emotional notes, totally faithful to the rest of the series, honestly worth the price of entry alone. But that's probably why the rest of the set felt so lacking. It's the only one with Gwen and Rhys in. Ng was suitably excellent as the third lead, they all worked brilliantly together.

Episode 4... I don't know what to say about this one really. It makes Day One look subtle by comparison. It also felt like the first episode of Torchwood One dealing with all the tedium of an office job where something spooky is going on. Again it only picks up towards the end. Tyler's solutions to the various issues were quite funny and he's really endeared himself to me even further with this episode. But it went on pretty long, and the episode focused too much on the non-Torchwood characters.
3.5/5 rounded up to 4 because I'm feeling generous.

Overall a real mixed bag. The cast and crew have been as always absolutely stellar but I hope the future sets improve upon this one. I was expecting better but I'd still recommend it.

I fully believe they can do good Torchwood without Jack, so I didn’t hesitate to get the full Among Us series. This one was a mixed bag, as I wish there wasn’t such a focus on side characters, 2 out of 4 stories is a lot of that. But they did connect to the larger story and the new big bad at least. And we got a Gwen story!

1st story: Really put me through the ringer emotionally but very well done. Liking the development of Ng and Orr. Nice set up for a new big bad.

2nd story: If they had to recast Colin they shouldn’t have given him a whole episode to carry. I didn’t mind the Colin centric stories in the other sets, but I’m annoyed they wasted another story on him ESPECIALLY with the recast. Also, this was the second episode in a row where a lot of terrible stuff is targeted at one specific person and it was just too much of that in a row, I skipped a bit of the misery. The recast actor did do a great job, he had to carry the whole episode. And the last 7 minutes are great and it’s relevant to the ongoing story.

3rd Story: The long awaited return of Gwen! Facing off with Ng! A lot of character development for Ng here and a wrap up for Gwen, although I would be happy to have Eve back for more Torchwood any time! Not how I thought a Ng and Gwen show down would go but very well done! This one makes the whole set worth it.

4th Story: Love me a Tyler and Mr. Colchester pairing. If only they weren’t background characters. Between this and the Colin story, I wish we got more time with the new core Torchwood group in this set. This one once again does tie into the larger story though, although we don’t know how yet. This one also had a lot of personal violence directed at one person, which was an overwhelming theme of this set that I did not enjoy there being so much of, but the story is a good one.

The 3rd Part of what I will tentatively (and in print eternally) call The Torchwood Get's Modern Saga see's the NuTW team on the run but still doing what they do best.

First thwarting the evils and warning of the dangers of mis and even disinformation in a small community...Especially with gossipers about.

Taking a sidebar to see just how easy it would be (and likely is) to psychologically break a person if you had the power of government

Following up on threads left dangling from as far back as God Among Us 1, and dropping lore bombs aplenty

then finally addressing the problems with the necessity of automated moderation. Spoiler? you get death threats. Also fake news...and peoples weird obsession with bad news and clickbait....hold onto that last one

Among Us 1 kicks the barn doors open and tells you it aint just "aliens" be they terrestial (ew racism) or Extra, the first problem with humanity is Us.

Despite the memeworthy title and slight boomervibe of da evils of tech, the series serves to remind us that torchwood the series isnt just 'Edgy Doctor Who with Consequences' but rather a critical speculative fiction piece set in that universe.

as over the top as it is down to earth, but in my humble opinion, humanity doesnt deserve subtlety anymore.

Four really good individual stories. The Gwen-centric episode was fantastic - a joy to hear Eve Myles and Kai Owen back in such a well written story. The other episodes were all great, however I am only giving this set four stars because I feel like they were all missing a connective tissue to bind them all together. Like I couldn't see how the connected, there was no overarching theme. I feel like this is essential for a boxset billed as the seventh series of Torchwood, despite the individual episodes being great.

Wow what a great first half.
I love that the aliens this series are able to use phones and the internet to use the way the world is to engineer their own soldiers, without lifting a finger.
was the best with Gwen and Rhys to come back they are my favourite!
Torchwood continues to be utterly remarkable and a joy to listen to.
So sad that this is 1/3 of the final The Story Continues, it's being built up well for a great sendoff.
