This book is Sammy Zagarella's story, which picks up where "Long Island Butcher" ends.
"The worst day of my life begins like every other day. It's funny how horror always collides with the banal." Melanie Stevens, the protagonist
Thus begins an age gap story that is mind blowing and intense... a young woman, Melanie Stevens, finds herself pregnant by her Mafioso (unbeknownst to her) ex-boyfriend. When she runs away to escape her abusive mother, she heads for her ex-boyfriend slash baby daddy's place. Instead of the ex she encounters his father, Sammy Zagarella, and learns that her ex is deceased. From that point, Melanie basically jumps out of the frying pan straight into the fire. She leaves behind an unhinged mother and ends up with a psychotic, grieving Mafia hitman.
Two broken souls join together in their grief, united in the health and safety of the unborn baby. When outside forces threatens Melanie's life, Sammy enlists in the help of his Vicari relatives to help find and eliminate the threat.
The plot was well written and kept me engaged throughout. I did quite a bit of "WTHs and WTFs" throughout the entire book. There were also moments that had me cackling loudly.
Personally, I'm kind of tired of and completely over every storyline (and not just from this author) these days involving a surprise pregnancy or secret baby trope, but aside from that I enjoyed the storyline and the storytelling. Jamila Jasper is my favorite BWWM author, and that's why I continue to support her work.
If pregnancy tropes as well as mafia romances are your cup of tea, this is definitely a story worth reading. 9/10 definitely recommend.
Omg I was waiting for Sammy’s story and I was not disappointed. Sammy’s mind was a bit twisted when his son died. Melanie, ex gf of Enrico Zagarella, is pregnant. When her mother found out she felt she wouldn’t be safe there anymore so she decided to leave. Melanie is now in the care of Sammy. Sammy has decided to see a therapist for his mental state, but things got so turned around. He was now having urges and needed to act on them. Only thing about it is that he didn’t remember what happened the next day. At some point during their situation, Melanie has started to have feelings for Sammy but didn’t think it was mutual. He is just not a vocal person when it comes to his feelings. Sammy will do anything to protect his family. He now see his grandchild as “their” baby cause he feels this is his second chance. This is a must read. It is best to read in order to get an understanding of the characters. HEA guaranteed.
I received an ARC copy and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I enjoyed the story. I really wanted to lay hands on Melanie’s mother. She wasn’t even worthy of the title of mother. I’m glad Melanie could grow beyond on her environment. Though brought together by unique circumstances, Sammy and Melanie were made for each other despite their age difference. They were both broken people sharing their grief. They were able to help each other heal and grow as people. I loved seeing Meg move up from Nashville! Makes me wonder what Sammy didn’t want to agree to, hmmm. I see Alexis is still her sassy self!
This was really good. A really unconventional & fascinating couple. Making it seem like pregnant women are hormonal beasts was a bit extra, I mean slapping him is over the top. Even John complained about Alexis acting like was another person. I can appreciate acknowledging race & racism in these books because too many interracial books pretend it doesn't exists but every book calling black women cockroaches is overkill. Especially when having the bw characters themselves see their skincolor as a deficit. Come on, lets evolve these themes. Having Mel saying " making this black girl look like a princess" as if that's like turning water to wine. Enough!!! making all your bw characters self loathing about being black is so cringe, delusional & corny, if every book is gonna do this, it starts to feel like projection. Racism is real but acting like black women feel like losers because of it is ridiculous. The whole bad bish motif that the WORLD has copied is the sole creation of black women. We all don't see our skin as an apparatus weighing us down, in fact it's quite the opposite. No matter who we're dating. Self loathing isn't endearing.
This author is an erotic, romantic writer. Melanie and Sammy struggled at first, but love brought them through. This author loves to write about older men and younger women. I'm not sure how I feel about that, but to each his own. Love conquer s all.
This is the last book in the Long Island mafia series by Jamila Jasper, and this one was about Sammy and his dead son‘s girlfriend pregnant girlfriend at that when Enrico died Melanie, who was his girlfriend/baby mom was left without her father‘s child and her boyfriend obviously and after she ended up getting expelled from school, her mom kicked her out and she moved in with Sammy as I mentioned the last review Sammy obviously had some mental issues after his son died, and he went to the psychiatrist to get meds and these meds basically make him do crazy stuff and he basically propositioned Melanie and they had sex. they basically find out that the psychiatrist was kind of poisoning, Sammy and the meds that she was giving him were making him act really crazy once he got off them him and Melanie started forming a relationship and they were so cute. then one day the psychiatrist called him back and he needs to get back on his meds and they found that the psychiatrist kidnapped Sammy, and we also saw that she had sick her dog on Melanie‘s mom which was sick as hell and then Sammy had to go to jail because they were suspecting him and was sad because Melanie was having her baby shower and Sammy was in jail like she was getting jail phone calls during the baby shower. It was very ghetto but then he ended up getting out and they got married and after was born, they end up trying for another baby, so the story had a good ending and it was really cute.

You saved the best for last. I loved the story of Sammy and Melanie and how they fought what they both felt for each other. I knew the woman was dirty from the beginning, but always knew Melanie was never weak and that she and Sammy would fight to be together. It’s nice to know that she had a true ride or die friend and I’m glad that Damzel changed. Glad Melanie and Sammy got their happily ever after.
Oh to have a Sammy in my life! Sammy was very supportive of Melanie, and took responsibility for her even when he did not have to. There was definitely suspense in this book, along with romance and so much love! Ms. Harper is always a one-click for me because she never disappoints!
I like the story and the characters. I enjoyed the series. I still feel the author left unanswered questions related to the story. She didn’t give closure to parts of the characters.
Why did the son get killed by his family? His name should have been dumb on prescription drugs.that was what he was slaying. Sad hot mess. Needs a do over.
Best book in this trilogy, none of that foul language about race. Really good plot and character development. 10/10 would re read again for Sammy and Melanie.
