Breakwater: A Gold Rush Romance
Charity suffereth long, and is kind.
Calista Black, the eldest daughter of a respected couple, discovers she is with child following a romantic fling. Hoping to shield her family from the embarrassment of an unwed daughter in a delicate condition, Calista travels east to start a new life.
On the jostling stagecoach, independent Calista meets Nevin Welch, a kindly stranger who assists her with her three-month-old babies who proves an excellent conversationalist. As she travels to their new home, she finds herself dependent on him in caring for her children.
Nevin Welch survived the Indian Wars with the help of his “brothers.” They swore to share everything: a home, their lives, future wealth, and a wife. As Nevin becomes enamored with Calista’s intelligence, strength, and self-sacrifice, he learns the truth of her journey and vows to keep her and the children safe – even proposing marriage.
Calista, wary of trusting another man with her heart, gives him the terms of their potential marriage. Nevin understands her hesitation and knows what their joining would mean. He agrees, determined to make their marriage work, but wanting a wife solely for himself.
